Abstract
Molossus molossus is an insectivorous molossid bat that is important in the control of nocturnal insects. It is the nominal and the most representative species of the family. However, there are few studies about its reproduction. Thus, this study aimed to evaluate variations of its female reproductive organs during the different reproductive phases. Twenty adult females, divided into four sample groups (non-reproductive, early and advanced pregnancy and lactation), were submitted to morphological and morphometric analyses. Results show that the female reproductive system of M. molossus is composed of ovaries, a short bicornuate uterus, slightly convoluted uterine tubes and vagina. The system presents a distinct morphofunctional asymmetry, with a marked dextro-dominance. The right ovaries of all analyzed groups (NON, P1, P2, and LAC) showed follicles at different stages of development, a large number of interstitial glands and a small, but persistent corpus luteum. Ovulation is simple, unilateral and preferential, occurring exclusively in the right ovary. Follicular development in the left ovary usually does not pass the secondary stage. Implantation is fundic and preferential, occurring exclusively in the right uterine horn. The placenta is formed with two distinct chorioallantoic portions, one diffuse endotheliochorial, which covers the entire uterine cavity and regresses in the final stages of pregnancy, and the principal discoidal hemochorial portion, formed in the implantation site. The uterine cervix presents a pseudostratified epithelium, while the vagina has a little keratinized stratified epithelium, which does not accentually vary in the different reproductive stages, but can disrupt and shed in some cases.

Abstract
Morphogenetic events during the development of the fetal ovary are crucial to the establishment of female fertility. However, the effects of structural rearrangements of the ovary and surrounding reproductive tissues on ovary morphogenesis remain largely uncharacterized. Using tissue clearing and lightsheet microscopy, we found that ovary folding correlated with regionalization into cortex and medulla. Relocation of the oviduct to the ventral aspect of the ovary led to ovary encapsulation, and mutual attachment of the ovary and oviduct to the cranial suspensory ligament likely triggered ovary folding. During this process, the rete ovarii (RO) elaborated into a convoluted tubular structure extending from the ovary into the ovarian capsule. Using genetic mouse models in which the oviduct and RO are perturbed, we found the oviduct is required for ovary encapsulation. This study reveals novel relationships among the ovary and surrounding tissues and paves the way for functional investigation of the relationship between architecture and differentiation of the mammalian ovary.

Abstract
Here we have summarized what is currently known about menstruating animal species with special emphasis on non-primate species: length of their menstrual cycle, ovulation, implantation, placentation, decidualization, and endometrial characteristics. Having an overview of all the possible animal models that can be used to study menstruation and the menstrual cycle could be useful to select the one that better matches the needs of the individual research projects. The most promising species to study menstruation seems to be the spiny mouse Acomys cahirinus. It is a rodent that could be easily held in the existing laboratory facilities for rats and mice but with the great advantage of having spontaneous menstruation and several human-like menstrual cycle characteristics. Among the species of menstruating bats, the black mastiff bat Molossus ater and wild fulvous fruit bat Rousettus leschenaultii are the ones presenting the most human-like characteristics. The elephant shrew seems to be the less suitable species among the ones analyzed. The induced mouse model of menstruation is also presented as an adaptable alternative to study menstruation.

Abstract
It is generally considered that, in mammals, the ovary is endowed with a finite number of oocytes at the time of birth. However, studies concerning rodents, lemurs and humans suggest the existence of stem cells from the germline that may be involved in germ-cell renewal, maintaining postnatal follicle development. This type of work on wild species is scarce; therefore the objective of this study was to determine ovarian morphology and the presence of progenitor cells from the germline of three species of phyllostomid bats (Artibeus jamaicensis, Glossophaga soricina and Sturnira lilium). The morphological characteristics of the ovaries and the expression of specific markers of germline cells, stem cells and proliferation cells were analysed. The morphology of the ovaries of the three bat species was similar. A polarised ovary with follicles at different stages of development and groups of cortical cells similar to primordial germ cells were observed. Immunofluorescent analysis showed that these cortical cells express germline, stem-cell and proliferative markers, indicating the identification of germ cells that could maintain pluripotency, as well as being mitotically active. This suggests that in the adult ovary of phyllostomid bats there may be a mechanism for the self-renewal of the germline.
