Coupling Value-Added Anodic Reactions with Electrocatalytic CO2 Reduction

Electrocatalytic CO₂ reduction features a promising approach to realize carbon neutrality. However, its competitiveness is limited by the sluggish oxygen evolution reaction (OER) at anode, which consumes a large portion of energy. Coupling value-added anodic reactions with CO₂ electroreduction has been emerging as a promising strategy in recent years to enhance the full-cell energy efficiency and produce valuable chemicals at both cathode and anode of the electrolyzer. This review briefly summarizes recent progresses on the electrocatalytic CO₂ reduction, and the economic feasibility of different CO₂ electrolysis systems is discussed. Then a comprehensive summary of recent advances in the coupled electrolysis of CO₂ and potential value-added anodic reactions is provided, with special focus on the specific cell designs. Finally, current challenges and future opportunities for the coupled electrolysis systems are proposed, which are targeted to facilitate progress in this field and push the CO₂ electrolyzers to a more practical level.

Metallene-related materials for electrocatalysis and energy conversion

As a member of graphene analogs, metallenes are a class of two-dimensional materials with atomic thickness and well-controlled surface atomic arrangement made of metals or alloys. When utilized as catalysts, metallenes exhibit distinctive physicochemical properties endowed from the under-coordinated metal atoms on the surface, making them highly competitive candidates for energy-related electrocatalysis and energy conversion systems. Significantly, their catalytic activity can be precisely tuned through the chemical modification of their surface and subsurface atoms for efficient catalyst engineering. This minireview summarizes the recent progress in the synthesis and characterization of metallenes, together with their use as electrocatalysts toward reactions for energy conversion. In the Synthesis section, we pay particular attention to the strategies designed to tune their exposed facets, composition, and surface strain, as well as the porosity/cavity, defects, and crystallinity on the surface. We then discuss the electrocatalytic properties of metallenes in terms of oxygen reduction, hydrogen evolution, alcohol and acid oxidation, carbon dioxide reduction, and nitrogen reduction reaction, with a small extension regarding photocatalysis. At the end, we offer perspectives on the challenges and opportunities with respect to the synthesis, characterization, modeling, and application of metallenes.

Electro-Synthesis of Organic Compounds with Heterogeneous Catalysis

Electro-organic synthesis has attracted a lot of attention in pharmaceutical science, medicinal chemistry, and future industrial applications in energy storage and conversion. To date, there has not been a detailed review on electro-organic synthesis with the strategy of heterogeneous catalysis. In this review, the most recent advances in synthesizing value-added chemicals by heterogeneous catalysis are summarized. An overview of electrocatalytic oxidation and reduction processes as well as paired electrocatalysis is provided, and the anodic oxidation of alcohols (monohydric and polyhydric), aldehydes, and amines are discussed. This review also provides in-depth insight into the cathodic reduction of carboxylates, carbon dioxide, CC, C≡C, and reductive coupling reactions. Moreover, the electrocatalytic paired electro-synthesis methods, including parallel paired, sequential divergent paired, and convergent paired electrolysis, are summarized. Additionally, the strategies developed to achieve high electrosynthesis efficiency and the associated challenges are also addressed. It is believed that electro-organic synthesis is a promising direction of organic electrochemistry, offering numerous opportunities to develop new organic reaction methods.

Supported Bimetallic Trimers Fe2M@NG: Triple-Atom Catalysts for CO2 Electroreduction

Excessive accumulation of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere has become a serious environmental problem due to the increasing consumption of fossil fuels in modern society. Reasonably reducing CO₂ in the atmosphere has become a new research hotspot. Electrocatalytic CO₂ reduction reaction (CO₂RR) offers an appealing strategy to reduce the atmospheric CO₂ concentration and to produce value-added chemicals simultaneously. In this paper, two-dimensional (2D) N-decorated graphene (NG)-supported bimetallic trimers (Fe₂M@NG) were designed as triple-atom catalysts (TACs). Theoretical calculations showed that Fe₂M@NG can effectively activate CO₂, and among the 23 TACs examined, Fe₂Ir@NG not only has a good catalytic activity for CO₂RR (limiting potential is 0.49 V for CH₄ formation) but also limits the competing side reaction of the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). Our theoretical study not only further extends the triple-atom catalysts, but also opens a new door to boost the sustainable CO₂ conversion.
