Abstract
The UV/Vis absorption energies νmax of Reichardt's dye B30 with respect to ET(30) and 4-nitroaniline (NA) are investigated as a function of the solvent composition Nav,z. in co-solvent/water mixtures. Nav,z. is the average molar concentration of the solvent mixture at a given solvent fraction z. The z can be the mole, the volume or the mass fraction. The co-solvents considered were acetonitrile, acetone, tetrahydrofuran, pyridine, piperidine and 2-(diethylamino)-ethanol. Acetone and acetonitrile can be expected to slightly enhance the water structure at low co-solvent concentrations. This interpretation is supported by the analysis of the refractive index as a function of the solvent composition. In general, it can be stated that the structural complexity of the binary solvent mixtures is mainly responsible for the evolution of the absorption energies ET(30) or νmax(NA) as a function of the mixture composition. In particular, the endothermic solvation of NA in co-solvent/water mixtures and its effect on the νmax(NA) is highlighted.

Abstract
At six temperatures T between 10 and 50 degrees C and at mole fractions x(g) of glycerol (0<x(g)<or=0.9) the complex (electric) permittivity epsilon(nu) of glycerol/water mixtures has been measured as a function of frequency nu between 1 MHz and 40 GHz. The spectra of the glycerol/water mixtures can be well represented by a Davidson-Cole [J. Chem. Phys. 18, 1417 (1950)] relaxation function that reveals an unsymmetric relaxation time distribution. The effective dipole orientation correlation factor derived from the static permittivity displays an unspectacular behavior upon mixture composition. The dielectric relaxation time reveals a simple relation to the shear viscosity of the mixtures, but both quantities are not proportional to one another. The relaxation times at high temperatures nicely complement previously determined low temperature data, following a Vogel-Fulcher-Tammann-Hesse [Z. Phys. 22, 645 (1925); J. Am. Chem. Ceram. Soc. 8, 339 (1923); Z. Anorg. Allg. Chem. 156, 245 (1926)] (VFTH) temperature dependence. When the Eyring behavior is assumed a limiting high temperature form of the VFTH relation, enthalpy, and entropy of activation values are found which adopt significantly higher values in the glycerol rich mixtures than in the water rich liquids. The relaxation time distribution parameter at high water content indicates a dynamically heterogeneous structure of the liquids. Likely there exist glycerol rich and water rich microphases.

Abstract
Solvatochromic data of 2,6-diphenyl-4-(2,4,6-triphenylpyridinium-1-yl)phenolate (RB) in aqueous methanol, 1-propanol, 2-propanol, and 2-methyl-2-propanol at 25 degrees C were recalculated by employing a recently introduced model that explicitly considers the presence of 1:1 alcohol-water hydrogen-bonded species, ROH-W, in bulk solution and their exchange equilibria with water and alcohol in the probe solvation microsphere. The thermosolvatochromic behavior of RB in aqueous ethanol was measured in the temperature range from 10 to 60 degrees C; the results thus obtained were treated according to the same model. All calculations require reliable values of Kdissoc, the dissociation constant of the ROH-W species. This was previously calculated from the dependence of the density of the binary solvent mixture on its composition. Through the use of iteration, the volume of the hydrogen-bonded species, VROH-W, and Kdissoc are obtained simultaneously from the same set of experimental data. This approach may be potentially problematic because Kdissoc and VROH-W are highly correlated. Therefore, we introduced the following approach: (i) VROH-W was obtained from ab initio calculations, (ii) these volumes were corrected for the nonideal behavior of the binary solvent mixtures at different temperatures, (iii) corrected VROH-W values were employed as a constant in the equation used to calculate Kdissoc (from density vs binary solvent mixture composition). VROH-W calculated by the COSMO-RS solvation model fitted the density data better than those calculated by the IEFPCM model. In all aqueous alcohols, solvation by ROH-W is favored over that by the two precursor solvents. In aqueous ethanol, a temperature increase resulted in a gradual desolvation of RB, due to a decrease in the hydrogen-bonding of both components of the mixture. The microscopic polarities of ROH-W are much closer to those of the precursor alcohols.
