Effect of Psyllium Husk Addition on the Structural and Physical Properties of Biodegradable Thermoplastic Starch Film

The research subject was the analysis of the microstructure, barrier properties, and mechanical resistance of the psyllium husk (PH)-modified thermoplastic starch films. The tensile tests under various static loading conditions were not performed by researchers for this type of material before and are essential for a more precise assessment of the material’s behavior under the conditions of its subsequent use. The film samples were manufactured by the casting method. PH addition improved starch gelatinization and caused a decrease in failure strain by 86% and an increase in failure stress by 48% compared to pure films. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy results showed the formation of additional hydrogen bonds between polysaccharides in starch and PH. An increase in the number of hydrophilic groups in the modified films resulted in a faster contact angle decrease (27.4% compared to 12.8% for pure ones within the first 5 s); however, it increased the energy of water binding and surface complexity. The modified films showed the opacity at 600 nm, 43% higher than in the pure starch film, and lower transmittance, suggesting effectively improving barrier properties to UV light, a potent lipid-oxidizing agent in food systems.

Enzyme-Degradable Hybrid Polymer/Silica Microbubbles as Ultrasound Contrast Agents

The fabrication of an enzyme-degradable polymer/silica hybrid microbubble is reported that produces an ultrasound contrast image. The polymer, a triethoxysilane end-capped polycaprolactone (SiPCL), is used to incorporate enzyme-degradable components into a silica microbubble synthesis, and to impart increased elasticity for enhanced acoustic responsiveness. Formulations of 75, 85, and 95 wt % SiPCL in the polymer feed produced quite similar ratios of SiPCL and silica in the final bubble but different surface properties. The data suggest that different regions of the microbubbles were SiPCL-rich: the inner layer next to the polystyrene template core and the outer surface layer, thereby creating a sandwiched silica-rich layer of the bubble shell. Overall, the thickness of the microbubble shell was dependent on the starting TEOS concentration and the reaction time. Despite the layered structure, the microbubble could be efficiently degraded by lipase enzyme, but was stable without enzyme. The ultrasound contrast showed a general trend of increase in image intensity with SiPCL feed ratio, although the 95 wt % SiPCL bubbles did not produce a contrast image, probably due to bubble collapse. At higher normalized peak negative acoustic pressure (mechanical index, MI), a nonlinear frequency response also emerges, characterized by the third harmonic at around 3f0, and increases with MI. The threshold MI transition from linear to nonlinear response increased with decrease in SiPCL.

Spreading and Infiltration of Inkjet-Printed Polymer Solution Droplets on a Porous Substrate

Simultaneous spreading and infiltration of inkjet-printed droplets has been studied. Small (54- and 63-microm diameter) droplets of an aqueous polymer solution (2.4 vol% polyacrylic acid, PAA, MW 60,000) were deposited on high green density porous ceramic beds, and the wetting-induced spreading and infiltration of the droplets were characterized. The time scales for spreading and infiltration were comparable (approximately milliseconds), resulting in interruption of the spreading prior to completion by infiltration of the liquid into the powder bed, a situation that has received little treatment in the literature. The infiltration time was varied by changing the pore size (via particle size) in the powder bed, and it was confirmed that slower infiltration resulted in greater spreading of the liquid. The spreading and infiltration of the droplet were modeled to examine the coupling between the two processes and allow prediction of the maximum extension of the droplet as a function of the powder bed particle size. The liquid spreading was found to follow r(t)=a(b+t)(n) behavior, and the effect of particle size on infiltration time was used to predict the point at which spreading ceases due to infiltration for various particle sizes.

Studies comparing Kollicoat MAE 30 D with commercial cellulose derivatives for enteric coating on caffeine cores

The products that are processed in aqueous form, such as Aqoat MF (suspension), Aquateric (pseudolatex), HP 55 (ammonia-based solution), and Kollicoat MAE 30 D (latex), were compared (in the form of spray dispersions, isolated films prepared from the dispersions, and caffeine-film-coated tablets with 5.5, 8.0, and 11.0 mg film/cm2) with one another and with ethanolic HP 55 S solution. The addition of pigments to all of the liquid preparations, with the exception of the ammoniacal solution of HP 55, led to a slight increase in pH. In each case, the viscosity of both solutions was well above that of the other formulations. The minimum film-forming temperature was decidedly reduced by the addition of pigment. Kollicoat MAE was the undissolved film-former that had the smallest particle size and particle size distribution. The next smallest were those of Aqoat MF. The latex and the suspension were the only products that were sensitive to shear and heat. The isolated films did not display any tack. The strongest films and the films most impermeable to water vapor were obtained from solutions, and this can be ascribed to the fine distribution of the film-former. None of the isolated films showed signs of dissolving at pH 4.5. At pH 5.5, only the HP 55 was dissolved. This was because HP 55 was processed in ammonia-based solution; as a result of which, films that were not very resistant to gastric juice were obtained. The other formulations did not dissolve until the pH reached 6.0. As the pH rose, the rate of dissolution increased for all of the films. The permeability to protons was similar to that of caffeine-film-coated tablets to gastric juice. The resistance increased in the following sequence: HP 55 (ammonia-based) < Aquateric < Aqoat MF < HP 55 S (organic) and Kollicoat MAE. As a result of the temperature treatment and the rate of spraying, the production time on a 5-kg scale was twice as long for 5.5 mg Aqoat MF/cm2 as it was for Kollicoat MAE. This amount of film sufficed for Kollicoat MAE and HP 55 S solution to achieve adequate resistance to gastric juice. Aqoat MF did not attain the same resistance until a thickness of 11 mg film/cm2 was reached. Film tablets with Aquateric and ammonia-based HP 55 solution absorbed more than 20% of gastric juice at this film thickness.
