Effect of homogeneous magnetic fields on responses to toxic stimulation in Spirostomum ambiguum

Magnetoreception in microorganisms and fungi

The ability to respond to magnetic fields is ubiquitous among the five kingdoms of organisms. Apart from the mechanisms that are at work in bacterial magnetotaxis, none of the innumerable magnetobiological effects are as yet completely understood in terms of their underlying physical principles. Physical theories on magnetoreception, which draw on classical electrodynamics as well as on quantum electrodynamics, have greatly advanced during the past twenty years, and provide a basis for biological experimentation. This review places major emphasis on theories, and magnetobiological effects that occur in response to weak and moderate magnetic fields, and that are not related to magnetotaxis and magnetosomes. While knowledge relating to bacterial magnetotaxis has advanced considerably during the past 27 years, the biology of other magnetic effects has remained largely on a phenomenological level, a fact that is partly due to a lack of model organisms and model responses; and in great part also to the circumstance that the biological community at large takes little notice of the field, and in particular of the available physical theories. We review the known magnetobiological effects for bacteria, protists and fungi, and try to show how the variegated empirical material could be approached in the framework of the available physical models.

Effects of static magnetic fields on growth ofParamecium caudatum

Little is known about the influence of magnetic fields on growth of primitive eukaryotes such as the ciliate Paramecium. The latter are known to exhibit interesting characteristics such as electrotaxis, gravitaxis, and membrane excitability not commonly encountered in higher organisms. This preliminary study reports the effects of static magnetic fields on growth of Paramecium caudatum. The microorganisms were either permanently or 24 h on-and-off exposed to North and South polarity magnetic fields of average field gradient 4.3 T/m, for a period of 96 h. The growth rate and lag phase of all exposed populations were not significantly different from control ones exposed to normal geomagnetic field (P > .05). However, a significant negative shift in t(max) (time taken for maximum growth) of 10.5%-12.2% and a significant decrease (P < .05) in population size of 10.2%-15.1% during the 96 h of experimental conditions were recorded for exposed populations compared to control. Our results suggest that magnetic fields, irrespective of polarity and exposure period reduce Paramecium growth by triggering early senescence of the population. The mechanisms underlying the small changes in population growth are unknown at this level, but various hypotheses have been suggested, including disorganization of swimming patterns resulting from (i) changes in cell membrane electric potential due to high speed movement through a gradient magnetic field and (ii) thermodynamic effect of anisotropic magnetic energies on cell membrane components affecting functioning of calcium channels. Altered swimming movements could in turn affect highly orchestrated processes such as conjugation, essential for survival of the organisms during development of adverse environmental conditions as thought to occur in the closed culture system used in this study.

Effect of a 7-tesla homogeneous magnetic field on mammalian cells

When two types of mammalian cells, mouse leukemia cells, P388, and Chinese hamster fibroblast cells, V79, were grown under a 7-tesla (T) homogeneous magnetic field which was produced by a newly constructed superconducting magnet biosystem (SBS), the growth pattern of cells under 7 T magnetic field and the geomagnetic field control showed no differences. The DNA distribution of the two cells was compared by flow cytometry after exposure to 7 T for 3 and 24 h, but there was no significant differences between magnet-exposed cells and unexposed cells. When the two types of cells were exposed to different concentrations of the antitumor agent, bleomycin (BLM), for 3 h under 7 T, their viable cell numbers were almost the same as that of the control although sensitivity to BLM was different between the two cells. These results suggest that the 7 T homogeneous magnetic field exerts no adverse effects on mammalian cells.

Designing EMF experiments: what is required to characterize "exposure"?

Anyone who has attempted to organize and synthesize the results of research on biological effects of electric and magnetic fields (EMF) has experienced frustration when trying to evaluate the comparability of EMF exposures among separate studies. Reporting of exposure characteristics is often incomplete, and some investigators focus on particular nuances of exposure, which in other laboratories go unrecorded because they are not regarded as important. The obstacles encountered when comparing studies, when designing replication studies, and when evaluating research proposals could be reduced were a more standardized approach taken in describing "EMF exposure." To this end, a numerical listing of 18 separate parameters important to EMF exposure characterization is proposed. Although the goal of this list is primarily to expedite the description of EMF exposure, references are provided to examples of EMF exposures and to detailed discussions of EMF exposure systems.

Lack of an effect of static magnetic field on calcium efflux from isolated chick brains

45Ca2+ efflux from neonatal isolated chick brains was measured. The brains were exposed to uniform or nonuniform static magnetic fields. The field intensity ranged from 200-900 mT. The exposure took place during incubation and/or when efflux was being measured. No difference appeared in the 45Ca2+ efflux between controls and exposed brains.
