Genetic architecture of morphological adaptation and plasticity in insects: gaps, biases, and future directions

Insects exhibit a vast array of morphological specializations. Recent eco-evo-devo studies have provided a fresh perspective into how insect morphology can respond to the environment, both plastically and adaptively. Here, we performed a systematic literature analysis to identify biases and gaps in research on the molecular mechanisms underlying insect morphological adaptation and plasticity. We found that plasticity studies are increasingly present in the literature, while adaptation studies lag behind. Additionally, we observed a disproportionate focus on a few insect orders and specific traits like wings and body size. We highlight the need to explore the broader insect diversity, including understudied groups and unexplored traits like reproductive organs, as well as utilize advanced methods to capture subtle morphological variation. Studying a wider range of species with diverse morphologies and ecological features, as well as implementing modern genome-wide tools, can reveal the full spectrum of mechanisms underlying morphological adaptation and plasticity in insects.

A Morphospace Exploration Using a General Model of Development Reveals a Basic Set of Morphologies for Early Animal Development and Evolution

What morphologies are more likely to appear during evolution is a central question in zoology. Here we offer a novel approach to this question based on first developmental principles. We assumed that morphogenesis results from the genetic regulation of cell properties and behaviors (adhesion, contraction, etc.). We used EmbryoMaker, a general model of development that can simulate any gene network regulating cell properties and behaviors, the mechanical interactions and signaling between cells and the morphologies arising from those. We created spherical initial conditions with anterior and dorsal territories. We performed simulations changing the cell properties and behaviors regulated in these territories to explore which morphologies may have been possible. Thus, we obtained a set of the most basic animal morphologies that can be developmentally possible assuming very simple induction and morphogenesis. Our simulations suggest that elongation, invagination, evagination, condensation and anisotropic growth are the morphogenetic transformations more likely to appear from changes in cell properties and behaviors. We also found some parallels between our simulations and the morphologies of simple animals, some early stages of animal development and fossils attributed to early animals.

Twenty years on from Developmental Plasticity and Evolution: middle-range theories and how to test them

In Developmental Plasticity and Evolution, Mary-Jane West-Eberhard argued that the developmental mechanisms that enable organisms to respond to their environment are fundamental causes of adaptation and diversification. Twenty years after publication of this book, this once so highly controversial claim appears to have been assimilated by a wealth of studies on 'plasticity-led' evolution. However, we suggest that the role of development in explanations for adaptive evolution remains underappreciated in this body of work. By combining concepts of evolvability from evolutionary developmental biology and quantitative genetics, we outline a framework that is more appropriate to identify developmental causes of adaptive evolution. This framework demonstrates how experimental and comparative developmental biology and physiology can be leveraged to put the role of plasticity in evolution to the test.

Bias in the arrival of variation can dominate over natural selection in Richard Dawkins's biomorphs

Biomorphs, Richard Dawkins's iconic model of morphological evolution, are traditionally used to demonstrate the power of natural selection to generate biological order from random mutations. Here we show that biomorphs can also be used to illustrate how developmental bias shapes adaptive evolutionary outcomes. In particular, we find that biomorphs exhibit phenotype bias, a type of developmental bias where certain phenotypes can be many orders of magnitude more likely than others to appear through random mutations. Moreover, this bias exhibits a strong preference for simpler phenotypes with low descriptional complexity. Such bias towards simplicity is formalised by an information-theoretic principle that can be intuitively understood from a picture of evolution randomly searching in the space of algorithms. By using population genetics simulations, we demonstrate how moderately adaptive phenotypic variation that appears more frequently upon random mutations can fix at the expense of more highly adaptive biomorph phenotypes that are less frequent. This result, as well as many other patterns found in the structure of variation for the biomorphs, such as high mutational robustness and a positive correlation between phenotype evolvability and robustness, closely resemble findings in molecular genotype-phenotype maps. Many of these patterns can be explained with an analytic model based on constrained and unconstrained sections of the genome. We postulate that the phenotype bias towards simplicity and other patterns biomorphs share with molecular genotype-phenotype maps may hold more widely for developmental systems.

Random with Respect to Fitness or External Selection? An Important but Often Overlooked Distinction

Mutations are often described as being "random with respect to fitness." Here we show that the experiments used to establish randomness with respect to fitness are only capable of showing that mutations are random with respect to current external selection. Current debates about whether or not mutations are directed may be at least partially resolved by making use of this distinction. Additionally, this distinction has important mathematical, experimental, and inferential implications.
