Humidity-Controlled Tunable Emission in a Dye-Incorporated Metal-Hydrogel-Metal Cavity

Actively controllable photoluminescence is potent for a wide variety of applications from biosensing and imaging to optoelectronic components. Traditionally, methods to achieve active emission control are limited due to complex fabrication processes or irreversible tuning. Here, we demonstrate active emission tuning, achieved by changing the ambient humidity in a fluorescent dye-containing hydrogel integrated into a metal-insulator-metal (MIM) system. Altering the overlapping region of the MIM cavity resonance and the absorption and emission spectra of the dye used is the underlying principle to achieving tunability of the emission. We first verify this by passive tuning of cavity resonance and further experimentally demonstrate active tuning in both air and aqueous environments. The proposed approach is reversible, easy to integrate, and spectrally scalable, thus providing opportunities for developing tunable photonic devices.

Optical tuning of plasmon-enhanced photoluminescence

Photoluminescence (PL) can be enhanced and tuned with the assistance of surface plasmons. Traditional methods of generating tunable fluorophores are either of low efficiency or complicated with poor controllability. Here, we propose the optical tuning and enhancement of PL by modifying the plasmon modes, which shows unique advantages of generality, simplicity, and on-demand controllability. We adopted gold nanoparticles on a mirror as the plasmonic resonator, and responsive polymers as the spacers as well as the emitters in the nanogaps. By controlling the coating thickness of polymers, we can achieve tunable plasmon resonances as well as PL peaks with an enhancement factor up to ∼7000. Furthermore, we show the optical tuning of the plasmon resonances via laser irradiation which modifies the nanogaps. Thus, the PL peaks of the polymers shift accordingly with plasmon resonances. This tuning mechanism is based on plasmon-enhanced PL, which selectively enhances PL signals at different wavelengths. Such a plasmon-assisted PL selection by the optical tuning method provides new opportunities for photonic devices with applications of multiplex sensing and full colour displays.

Effect of carrier confinement on effective mass of excitons and estimation of ultralow disorder in Al x Ga1-x As/GaAs quantum wells by magneto-photoluminescence

Effect of charge carrier confinement and ultra-low disorder acquainted in AlGaAs/GaAs multi-quantum well system is investigated via Magneto-photoluminescence spectroscopy. Significant increase of effective mass is observed for the confined exciton in narrow QWs. The foremost reason behind such an observation is due to the induced non-parabolicity in bands. Moreover, as the thickness of the QW are reduced, confined excitons in QW experience atomic irregularities at the hetero-junctions and their effects are prominent in the photoluminescence linewidth. Amount of photoluminescence line-broadening caused by the atomic irregularities at the hetero-junctions is correlated with average fluctuation (δ ₁) in QW thickness. The estimated δ ₁ for Al_0.3Ga_0.7As/GaAs QWs are found to be ±(0.14 - 1.6)× 'one monolayer thickness of GaAs layer'. Further, the strong perturbations due to magnetic field in a system helps in realizing optical properties of exciton in QWs, where magnetic field is used as a probe to detect ultralow defects in the QW. Additionally, the influence of magnetic field on the free and bound exciton luminescence is explained by a simple model. The proposed approach for measuring the interface and volume defects in an ultra-low disordered system by Magneto-PL spectroscopy technique will be highly beneficial in high mobility devices for advanced applications.
