Flipping a biochemistry class within a medical curriculum: Impacts on perception, engagement, and attainment

Flipped Classroom (FCR) as an Effective Teaching-Learning Module for a Large Classroom: A Mixed-Method Approach

Flipped classroom (FCR) is one of the emerging active teaching-learning methods in the medical profession. Its potential for achieving learning objectives, especially in the scenario of a large classroom, especially in medical schools, has not been convincingly demonstrated. This study was designed to establish FCR model conduction and its overall utility as a teaching-learning methodology for undergraduate medical students in large classroom settings using a mixed-method approach using quantitative (assessment scores) and qualitative criteria (subjective feedback from students and teachers).

FCR was conducted for a batch of 170 first-year medical students for a hematology topic. Pre- and post-assessments (based on all the cognitive learning domains) were done to quantify the objective improvement after exposure to the FCR. In addition, subjective feedback from both students and teachers was taken on a validated feedback survey to decipher the qualitative benefits of the FCR.

Comparing pre- and post-assessment scores, there was a significant improvement after the FCR session, especially in the low performers. There was optimistic feedback from students and teachers regarding the utility of FCR as a teaching-learning module.

FCR as a teaching-learning module was feasible and effective, and the users seemed primarily satisfied. Although there is a higher workload for students and teachers, still FCR is an effective teaching-learning module for a large classroom.

Hot topics and frontier evolution in college flipped classrooms based on mapping knowledge domains

With the outbreak of COVID-19 and the development of online teaching, the online flipping teaching mode has attracted increasing attention. Systematic analysis of the research status and development trend of the flipped classrooms is significant for guiding the improvement of the quality of online flipped teaching. This study used the metrology software CiteSpace to draw a scientific knowledge map of relevant research in the web of science database from 2013 to 2021. It performed visual analysis of research authors, research institutions and countries, keyword clustering, keywords co-occurrence, and keyword time zone distribution. The results showed that: (1) The flipped classrooms research has attracted increasing attention from the social and educational circles, however, the relationship between relevant research authors, institutions, and countries is not close enough, and there is little cooperation. We need to strengthen cooperation further and realize the sharing of high-quality resources; (2) Based on keyword co-occurrence cluster analysis, this study identified three hot topics, namely, preparation before class, classroom activities and consolidation after class; (3) According to the keyword time zone map, this study divided three frontier evolution trends: exploration period, adaptation period, and growth period; (4) Finally, with the spread of novel coronavirus, it is suggested to promote the online flipped classroom teaching mode, and put forward reasonable suggestions from the perspective of teachers, students and researchers, and look forward to the future digital development direction of the flipped classroom.

Case study: Co-creating a flipped feed-in approach to a virtual biochemistry lab assessment: increasing student achievement and engagement in a large, diverse cohort

More inclusive, authentic assessments are required to address awarding gaps and to ensure that bioscience students can apply their knowledge to relevant work-based scenarios. In this case report, we present a co-created approach to designing a more inclusive, virtual biochemistry lab assessment for a diverse cohort of ∼270 first-year students. The assignment was to write up an inclusive clinical case study as a one-page journal article. A flipped classroom approach taught the relevant skills, along with simulated labs from Learning Science Ltd. Student Lecturers co-created the assessment, including the marking rubric and the unexemplars. We replaced traditional feedback with a flipped, feed-in approach where students were able to engage in a formative assessment with peer marking and unexemplars. Whilst the summative assessment was marked anonymously, a dialogue-based approach was employed, where students could request personalised audio feed-forward from the tutor. The high pass rate (97%) and student satisfaction score (88%) suggest that this approach is an effective way to challenge, engage and support a large, diverse cohort of students. First-year students who participated in the flipped feed-in experience obtained a significantly higher summative mark (56.7% cf. 50.9%) than those who did not. Interestingly, students in receipt of learning adjustments scored higher marks on average in the summative assessment (59.3% cf. 54.3%), suggesting that we have reversed the disability-based attainment gap. Further investigation into whether a co-created, flipped feed-in approach can reduce attainment gaps based on ethnicity, gender and age is warranted.

Engagement with video content in the blended classroom

Blended learning is becoming the expected norm for core content delivery in many institutions. Pre-recorded videos in the form of screencasts are the primary delivery method, with students being asked to engage with the content in this medium. Usage is only likely to increase into the future as delivery moves away from traditional lectures and seminars. In this perspective, we look at the use of video material as a means of content delivery and how to help students engage with it. Theoretical literature around cognitive loading and active learning, alongside personal experience of delivery, is drawn on to give a framework for creating engaging recordings and learning activities.
