The Role of Copper in the Upgrading of Bioalcohols

Catalyst Performance Studies on the Guerbet Reaction in a Continuous Flow Reactor Using Mono- and Bi-Metallic Cu-Ni Porous Metal Oxides

Higher alcohols like 1-butanol are considered important biofuels with superior properties compared to the more readily available bio-ethanol. An attractive route to prepare 1-butanol from ethanol is the Guerbet reaction. We here report the use of hydrotalcite-derived mono- (Cu-PMO or Ni-PMO) and bi-metallic (CuNi-PMO) porous metal oxide catalysts for the Guerbet coupling of ethanol to 1-butanol in a continuous flow reactor (320 °C, 0.1 MPa, LHSV = 15 mL g−1 h−1) at extended times on stream (~160 h). Two distinct regimes with different product distributions were observed for the Cu-PMO and CuNi-PMO catalyst with time on stream. At the start of the run, the initial conversion of ethanol dropped from about 85% to less than 20% after 60 h and acetaldehyde was the main product (regime 1). At prolonged times on stream (60–160 h), fairly constant low conversions of ethanol (14%) were observed and 1-butanol was the main product (regime 2). Performance of the monometallic Cu-PMO catalyst in terms of 1-butanol yield and stability was lower compared to the bi-metallic CuNi-PMO. Detailed catalyst characterization studies (XRD, H2-TPR, sorption of acrylic acid, TGA, TEM, HAADF-STEM, and EDS mapping) on both fresh and spent CuNi-PMO taken at various times on stream was performed to determine the changes in catalyst morphology and composition during a run, and particularly to obtain information on changes in catalyst structure operating in regime 1 or 2. The change in chemoselectivity is in line with an increase in basicity of the catalyst at extended runtimes.

Copper–Zirconia Catalysts: Powerful Multifunctional Catalytic Tools to Approach Sustainable Processes

Copper–zirconia catalysts find many applications in different reactions owing to their unique surface properties and relatively easy manufacture. The so-called methanol economy, which includes the CO2 and CO valorization and the hydrogen production, and the emerging (bio)alcohol upgrading via dehydrogenative coupling reaction, are two critical fields for a truly sustainable development in which copper–zirconia has a relevant role. In this review, we provide a systematic view on the factors most impacting the catalytic activity and try to clarify some of the discrepancies that can be found in the literature. We will show that contrarily to the large number of studies focusing on the zirconia crystallographic phase, in the last years, it has turned out that the degree of surface hydroxylation and the copper–zirconia interphase are in fact the two mostly determining factors to be controlled to achieve high catalytic performances.

Solid Acids for the Reaction of Bioderived Alcohols into Ethers for Fuel Applications

The use of solids acids in the synthesis of ethers suitable to be used as fuels or fuel additives were reviewed in a critical way. In particular, the role of Brønsted and Lewis acid sites was highlighted to focus on the pivotal role of the acidity nature on the product distribution. Particular emphasis is given to the recently proposed ethers prepared starting from furfural and 5-hydroxymethyl furfural. Thus, they are very promising products that can be derived from lignocellulosic biomass and bioalcohols and possess very interesting chemical and physical properties for their use in the diesel sector.

Ethanol dehydrogenative reactions catalyzed by copper supported on porous Al–Mg mixed oxides

Mixed aluminum and magnesium oxides (AlMgO) prepared by means of an emulsion-mediated sol–gel method was impregnated with copper species and used in the ethanol dehydrogenative reactions to produce acetaldehyde and ethyl acetate.

Cleave and couple: toward fully sustainable catalytic conversion of lignocellulose to value added building blocks and fuels

The structural complexity of lignocellulose offers unique opportunities for the development of entirely new, energy efficient and waste-free pathways in order to obtain valuable bio-based building blocks. Such sustainable catalytic methods - specifically tailored to address the efficient conversion of abundant renewable starting materials - are necessary to successfully compete, in the future, with fossil-based multi-step processes. In this contribution we give a summary of recent developments in this field and describe our "cleave and couple" strategy, where "cleave" refers to the catalytic deconstruction of lignocellulose to aromatic and aliphatic alcohol intermediates, and "couple" involves the development of novel, sustainable transformations for the formation of C-C and C-N bonds in order to obtain a range of attractive products from lignocellulose.

Selective Coupling of Bioderived Aliphatic Alcohols with Acetone Using Hydrotalcite Derived Mg-Al Porous Metal Oxide and Raney Nickel

Fermentation of sugars to the so-called ABE mixture delivers a three component mixture of shorter chain oxygenates: acetone, n-butanol and ethanol. In order to convert these into liquid transportation fuels that are analogous to the currently used fossil energy carriers, novel catalytic chain elongation methods involving C-C bond formation are desired. Herein we report on a simple, non-noble-metal-based method for the highly selective coupling of 1-butanol and acetone into high molecular weight (C7-C11) ketones, as well as ABE mixtures into (C5-C11) ketones using the solid base Mg-Al-PMO in combination with small amount of Raney nickel. Upon hydrodeoxygenation, these ketones are converted to fuel range alkanes with excellent carbon utilization (up to 89%) using Earth abundant metal containing catalysis.
