Revival of Zeolite-Templated Nanocarbon Materials: Recent Advances in Energy Storage and Conversion

Nanocarbon materials represent one of the hottest topics in physics, chemistry, and materials science. Preparation of nanocarbon materials by zeolite templates has been developing for more than 20 years. In recent years, novel structures and properties of zeolite-templated nanocarbons have been evolving and new applications are emerging in the realm of energy storage and conversion. Here, recent progress of zeolite-templated nanocarbons in advanced synthetic techniques, emerging properties, and novel applications is summarized: i) thanks to the diversity of zeolites, the structures of the corresponding nanocarbons are multitudinous; ii) by various synthetic techniques, novel properties of zeolite-templated nanocarbons can be achieved, such as hierarchical porosity, heteroatom doping, and nanoparticle loading capacity; iii) the applications of zeolite-templated nanocarbons are also evolving from traditional gas/vapor adsorption to advanced energy storage techniques including Li-ion batteries, Li-S batteries, fuel cells, metal-O2 batteries, etc. Finally, a perspective is provided to forecast the future development of zeolite-templated nanocarbon materials.

Oxidative desulfurization of model oil over Ta-Beta zeolite synthesized via structural reconstruction

As to metallosilicate zeolites, ions with larger size such as Ta⁵⁺ in the gels greatly retarded their crystallization during the hydrothermal synthesis, affording long-winded synthesis periods, up-limited framework-substituted metal contents, or even frustrated outcome. An efficient hydrothermal synthesis strategy for metallosilicate, in this case of Ta framework-substituted *BEA zeolite, via structural reconstruction was proposed to stride the gap. The Ta content in our developed Ta-Beta-Re-50 zeolite achieved up to 5.48 % (Si/Ta = 52), breaking through the limitation of Ta contents for conventional method (Si/Ta > 100). Additionally, this Ta-Beta-Re zeolite possessed nanosized crystals (20-40 nm) and short crystallization time (8 h), significantly improving space-time yields of practical zeolite production. Through spectroscopic study, it was confirmed that the existence of zeolite structural units intensively facilitated the formation of nucleation and crystal growth. This innovative Ta-Beta zeolite demonstrated high catalytic performances for oxidation desulfurization, far outperforming traditional fluoride-mediated Ta-Beta-F, which was ascribed to its excellent diffusion properties and incredible high isolated Ta contents. Additionally, the catalytic performance of Ta-Beta-Re could be regenerated after simple calcination and the deactivation may be caused by pore blocking of organics. This work provides a new method for rationally design and construction of metallosilicate materials with high activity for catalytic oxidation applications, which can bridge the conceptual and technical gap between periodic trends and zeolite material synthesis.

Organotemplate-Free β Zeolites: From Zeolite Synthesis to Hierarchical Structure Creation

Interest in the production of β zeolites in the absence of organic structure-directing agent (OSDA) has continued to grow consistently during the past decade. During this time, numerous strategies have been proposed to manipulate the hierarchy of zeolite pore structures in order to facilitate the transport of bulky reactants and to improve the accessibility of active sites in zeolite catalysts. In this work, we describe an organotemplate-free route to produce hierarchical β zeolites. Using OSDA-free β as the starting zeolites, we explored the applicability of various postsynthetic approaches to create hierarchical structures with mesoporosity, including framework stabilization, dealumination, conventional desilication, and hydrothermal desilication. While framework stabilization and dealumination were not effective in generating mesoporosity, they were necessary as modification steps to determine the efficacy of hierarchical structure creation. Compared to conventional desilication, hydrothermal desilication produces larger mesopores and much better preservation of microporosity and acidity because of the occurrence of recrystallization. The cost-effective, scalable production of organotemplate-free hierarchical β zeolites could greatly enhance the adoption of β zeolites in oil refining and petrochemical industries, where the advantages of hierarchically structured zeolites can dramatically improve catalytic performances in formulated catalysts.
