Abstract
The self-assembly reaction of 2-benzylaminoethanol (Hbae) with CuCl2 or Cu(NO3)2 leads to the formation of binuclear [Cu2(bae)2(Cl)2] (1) and [Cu2(Hbae)2(bae)2](NO3)2 (2) complexes, while the trinuclear [Cu3(Hbae)2(bae)2(dmba)2](NO3)2 (3) compound was obtained using the auxiliar bulky substituted 2,2-dimethylbutyric acid (Hdmba). Crystallographic studies reveal the molecular structures of 1 and 2 based on the similar {Cu2(μ-O)2} core, while the structure of 3 features the {Cu3(μ-O)2} core with consecutive arranement of the metal centres, supported by the additional carboxylate bridges. The strong intermolecular hydrogen bonds join the molecular structures into 1D (for 1 and 3) or 2D (for 2) architectures. All three compounds act as catalysts for the aerobic oxidation of 2-aminophenol to the phenoxazinone chromophore (phenoxazinone synthase-like activity) with the maximum reaction rates up to 2.3×10-8 M s-1. The substrate scope involves methyl-, nitro- and chloro-substituted 2-aminophenols, disclosing the negligible activity of nitro-derivatives, while the 6-amino-m-cresol substrate shows the highest activity with the initial reaction rate of 5.8×10-8 M s-1. The mechanism of the rate-limiting reaction step (copper-catalysed formation of 2-aminophenoxyl radicals) was investigated at the DFT level. The combined DFT and CASSCF studies of the copper superoxo CuII-OO⋅ radical species as possible unconventional reaction intermediates resulted in a rational mechanism of H-atom abstraction, where the activation energies follow the experimental reactivity of substituted 2-aminophenols. The TDDFT and STEOM-DLPNO-CCSD theoretical calculations of the absorption spectra of substrates, phenoxazinone chromophores and putative polynuclear species containing 2-aminophenoxo ligand are reported.

Abstract
A heterogeneous reusable palladium(II)-bis(N-heterocyclic carbene) catalyst was prepared and shown to catalyze the intramolecular C(sp3 )-H activation/cyclization of N-alkyl-2-bromoanilines furnishing indolines. This new catalytic system was based on a bis-imidazolium ligand immobilized on a spaced cross-linked polystyrene support. The iodide ligands on the catalyst played a central role in the efficiency of the process occurring through a "release and catch" mechanism. The heterogeneous nature of the catalyst was further exploited in the design of a continuous-flow protocol that allowed a more efficient recovery and reuse of the catalyst, as well as a very fast and safe procedure.

Abstract
A dimerization/cyclization reaction of 2-benzylamino-phenols for the direct synthesis of the oxazolo-phenoxazine skeleton is reported. The reaction occurs under copper catalysis in the presence of hypervalent iodine(III), giving selectively the 5H-oxazolo[4,5-b]phenoxazine compounds. The cascade process, which allows the conversion of the substrates into the tetracyclic products, involves three C-H functionalization steps. Initial oxidation of electron-rich arenes by the hypervalent iodine is essential for the dimerization of substrates, whereas the formation of the five-membered rings is promoted by the copper species. 1-Benzyl-2-phenyl-6-(aryl-benzyl)amino-benzimidazoles are regioselectively obtained using N,N'-dibenzyl-phenylenediamines as starting substrates. The fluorescence emission properties of these classes of products have been evaluated.

Conversion of lignin-derived 3-methoxycatechol to the natural product purpurogallin using bacterial P450 GcoAB and laccase CueO. Appl Microbiol Biotechnol 2021; 106:593-603. [PMID: 34971410 DOI: 10.1007/s00253-021-11738-5] [Citation(s) in RCA: 5] [Impact Index Per Article: 1.3] [Reference Citation Analysis] [Abstract] [Key Words] [Track Full Text] [Journal Information] [Subscribe] [Scholar Register] [Received: 09/22/2021] [Revised: 12/02/2021] [Accepted: 12/11/2021] [Indexed: 01/02/2023]
Abstract
Purpurogallin is a natural benzotropolone extracted from Quercus spp, which has antioxidant, anticancer, and anti-inflammatory properties. Purpurogallin is typically synthesized from pyrogallol using enzymatic or metal catalysts, neither economically feasible nor environmentally friendly. 3-Methoxycatechol (3-MC) is a lignin-derived renewable chemical with the potential to be a substrate for the biosynthesis of purpurogallin. In this study, we designed a pathway to produce purpurogallin from 3-MC. We first characterized four bacterial laccases and identified the laccase CueO from Escherichia coli, which converts pyrogallol to purpurogallin. Then, we used CueO and the P450 GcoAB reported to convert 3-MC to pyrogallol, to construct a method for producing purpurogallin directly from 3-MC. A total of 0.21 ± 0.05 mM purpurogallin was produced from 5 mM 3-MC by whole-cell conversion. This study provides a new method to enable efficient and sustainable synthesis of purpurogallin and offers new insights into lignin valorization. KEY POINTS: • Screening four bacterial laccases for converting pyrogallol to purpurogallin. • Laccase CueO from Escherichia coli presenting the activity for purpurogallin yield. • A novel pathway for converting lignin-derived 3-methoxycatechol to purpurogallin.

Recent Manganese Oxide Octahedral Molecular Sieves (OMS–2) with Isomorphically Substituted Cationic Dopants and Their Catalytic Applications. Catalysts 2021. Abstract
The present report describes the structural and physical–chemical variations of the potassium manganese oxide mineral, α–MnO2, which is a specific manganese octahedral molecular sieve (OMS) named cryptomelane (K–OMS–2), with different transition metal cations. We will describe some frequently used synthesis methods to obtain isomorphic substituted materials [M]–K–OMS–2 by replacing the original manganese cationic species in a controlled way. It is important to note that one of the main effects of doping is related to electronic environmental changes, as well as to an increase of oxygen species mobility, which is ultimately related to the creation of new vacancies. Given the interest and the importance of these materials, here, we collect the most recent advances in [M]–K–OMS–2 oxides (M = Ag, Ce, Mo, V, Nb, W, In, Zr and Ru) that have appeared in the literature during the last ten years, leaving aside other metal–doped [M]–K–OMS–2 oxides that have already been treated in previous reviews. Besides showing the most important structural and physic-chemical features of these oxides, we will highlight their applications in the field of degradation of pollutants, fine chemistry and electrocatalysis, and will suggest potential alternative applications.

Abstract

Iron-
and manganese-catalyzed para-selective oxidative
amination of (4-R)phenols by primary and secondary anilines was developed.
Depending on the identity of the R group, the products of this efficient
reaction are either benzoquinone anils (C–N coupling) that
are produced via a sequential oxidative amination/dehydrogenation
(R = H), oxidative amination/elimination (R = OMe) steps, or N,O-biaryl compounds (C–C coupling)
that are formed when R = alkyl through an oxidative amination/[3,3]-sigmatropic
rearrangement (quinamine rearrangement) process.

Abstract
Flow chemistry is one of the most prominent enabling technologies that has greatly shaped the way chemists' approach organic synthesis. Specifically, in drug discovery, the advantages of flow techniques over batch procedures allow the rapid and efficient assembly of compound libraries to be tested for biological properties. The aim of the present review is to comment on some representative examples from the last five years of literature that highlight how flow procedures are becoming of increasing importance for the synthesis of biologically-relevant molecules.
