Inertial capillary uptake of drops

Uptake of liquid drops into capillary tubes has been experimentally studied and quantitatively analyzed. In experiments, drops of water and aqueous glycerol (≤50 wt %) were drawn into cylindrical borosilicate glass and quartz tubes with an inner diameter of 0.50-0.75 mm. The meniscus height rise was measured using high-speed images captured at 4000 frames per second, and results within a conservatively defined inertial regime indicate constant uptake velocity. An increase in the inertial velocity with drop curvature was observed due to increasing Laplace pressure in the drop, as drop sizes were comparable to the width of the capillary tubes. Measured velocities were slower than predicted by a purely inertial-capillary model and best described by introducing a contact line friction, consistent with the observed variability and viscosity dependence of the results. Mean friction coefficients in borosilicate capillaries ranged from 169±1 for 50 wt % glycerol drops to 218±1 for water drops. Peaks in the instantaneous Laplace pressure caused by surface oscillations were also measured. Correlations with uptake velocity were qualitatively apparent, with a delay between peaks of similar magnitude to the inertial-capillary oscillation time.

Melt infiltration: an emerging technique for the preparation of novel functional nanostructured materials

The rapidly expanding toolbox for design and preparation is a major driving force for the advances in nanomaterials science and technology. Melt infiltration originates from the field of ceramic nanomaterials and is based on the infiltration of porous matrices with the melt of an active phase or precursor. In recent years, it has become a technique for the preparation of advanced materials: nanocomposites, pore-confined nanoparticles, ordered mesoporous and nanostructured materials. Although certain restrictions apply, mostly related to the melting behavior of the infiltrate and its interaction with the matrix, this review illustrates that it is applicable to a wide range of materials, including metals, polymers, ceramics, and metal hydrides and oxides. Melt infiltration provides an alternative to classical gas-phase and solution-based preparation methods, facilitating in several cases extended control over the nanostructure of the materials. This review starts with a concise discussion on the physical and chemical principles for melt infiltration, and the practical aspects. In the second part of this contribution, specific examples are discussed of nanostructured functional materials with applications in energy storage and conversion, catalysis, and as optical and structural materials and emerging materials with interesting new physical and chemical properties. Melt infiltration is a useful preparation route for material scientists from different fields, and we hope this review may inspire the search and discovery of novel nanostructured materials.

Filling a nanoporous substrate by dewetting of thin films

Following a simple thermodynamic model, which predicts that an array of non-wettable pores can be filled by dewetting of sufficiently thin films, we use molecular dynamics to simulate the rupture of nanometre-thick liquid Au films on nanoporous substrates. Our simulations clearly exhibit spinodal dewetting and hole nucleation, and some of the metal is indeed absorbed by non-wettable pores solely as a virtue of the Laplace pressure acting on dewetted droplets and rivulet-like structures. Finally, we show that the fraction of absorbed Au can be increased through patterning of the initial film.

Uptake and withdrawal of droplets from carbon nanotubes

We give an account of recent studies of droplet uptake and withdrawal from carbon nanotubes using simple theoretical arguments and molecular dynamics simulations. Firstly, the thermodynamics of droplet uptake and release is considered and tested via simulation. We show that the Laplace pressure acting on a droplet assists capillary uptake, allowing sufficiently small non-wetting droplets to be absorbed. We then demonstrate how the uptake and release of droplets of non-wetting fluids can be exploited for the use of carbon nanotubes as nanopipettes. Finally, we extend the Lucas-Washburn model to deal with the dynamics of droplet capillary uptake, and again test this by comparison with molecular dynamics simulations.
