Effect of ultrasound power on HCl leaching kinetics of impurity removal of aphanitic graphite

This study aimed to investigate the effect of ultrasonic power and temperature on the impurity removal rate during conventional and ultrasonic-assisted leaching of aphanitic graphite. The results showed that the ash removal rate increased gradually (∼50 %) with the increase in ultrasonic power and temperature but deteriorated at high power and temperature. The unreacted shrinkage core model was found to fit the experimental results better than other models. The Arrhenius equation was used to calculate the finger front factor and activation energy under different ultrasonic power conditions. The ultrasonic leaching process was significantly influenced by temperature, and the enhancement of the leaching reaction rate constant by ultrasound was mainly reflected in the increase of the pre-exponential factor A. Ultrasound treatment improved the efficiency of impurity mineral removal by destroying the inert layer formed on the graphite surface, promoting particle fragmentation, and generating oxidation radicals. The poor reactivity of hydrochloric acid with quartz and some silicate minerals is a bottleneck limiting the further improvement of impurity removal efficiency in ultrasound-assisted aphanitic graphite. Finally, the study suggests that introducing fluoride salts may be a promising method for deep impurity removal in the ultrasound-assisted hydrochloric acid leaching process of aphanitic graphite.

Photocatalytic Degradation Kinetics of Congo Red dye in a Sonophotoreactor with Nanotube TiO2

TiO2 nanotubes were prepared by anodisation of Ti sheets using the conventional electrochemical technique as well as an emerging sonoelectrochemical technique. Scanning electron microscope analysis showed that ultrasound-assisted anodisation yielded more ordered and controllable TiO2 tube banks with higher tube diameter. TiO2 nanotubes prepared using the sonoelectrochemical method were used in the sonophotocatalytic degradation experiments of Congo Red dye and degradation kinetics were obtained. The effects of temperature and the amplitude of ultrasound energy were investigated and a kinetic equation, which also included the effect of ultrasound energy, was developed. The sonophotocatalytic degradation rate was found to be – rdye = ka Cdye /( 1 + kbCdye). The ultrasound energy did not influence the activation energy. It was observed that the reaction rate accelerated in the presence of ultrasound energy in the course of the experiments. The activation energy of the reaction was calculated to be 56.1 kJ mol–1.

Ultrasound for low temperature dyeing of wool with acid dye

The possibility of reducing the temperature of conventional wool dyeing with an acid levelling dye using ultrasound was studied in order to reach exhaustion values comparable to those obtained with the standard procedure at 98 °C, obtaining dyed samples of good quality. The aim was to develop a laboratory method that could be transferred at industrial level, reducing both the energy consumption and fiber damage caused by the prolonged exposure to high temperature without the use of polluting auxiliary agents. Dyeings of wool fabrics were carried out in the temperature range between 60 °C and 80 °C using either mechanical or ultrasound agitation of the bath and coupling the two methods to compare the results. For each dyeing, the exhaustion curves of the dye bath were determined and the better results of dyeing kinetics were obtained with ultrasound coupled with mechanical stirring. Hence the corresponding half dyeing times, absorption rate constants according to Cegarra-Puente modified equation and ultrasonic efficiency were calculated in comparison with mechanical stirring alone. In the presence of ultrasound the absorption rate constants increased by at least 50%, at each temperature, confirming the synergic effect of sonication on the dyeing kinetics. Moreover the apparent activation energies were also evaluated and the positive effect of ultrasound was ascribed to the pre-exponential factor of the Arrhenius equation. It was also shown that the effect of ultrasound at 60 °C was just on the dye bath, practically unaffecting the wool fiber surface, as confirmed by the results of SEM analysis. Finally, fastness tests to rubbing and domestic laundering yielded good values for samples dyed in ultrasound assisted process even at the lower temperature. These results suggest the possibility, thanks to the use of ultrasound, to obtain a well equalized dyeing on wool working yet at 60°C, a temperature process strongly lower than 98°C, currently used in industry, which damages the mechanical properties of the fibers.

The application of high frequency ultrasound waves to remove ammonia from simulated industrial wastewater

This article aims at applying the ultrasound technique in the field of clean technology to protect environment. The principle of ultrasound was conducted here to remove and recover ammonia from industrial wastewater. Three different concentrations of ammonia namely 5%, 15% and 25% (vol.%) were used to study the efficiency of removing ammonia from water. These concentrations are exactly similar to what may be found in wastewater resulting from strippers at petroleum refinery. High ultrasound frequency device with 2.4 and 1.7 MHz was conducted to study the effect of waves on the removal of ammonia. It was found that the ultrasound has the ability to remove ammonia with 5% concentration to meet the local standard of treated wastewater within less than 2 h for 0.080 L solution. It was also found that as the concentration of the ammonia increases the removing of ammonia within 2 h decreases, still the concentration of the ammonia meets the standard of the treated wastewater. The ability of the ultrasound to remove the ammonia failed to produce any mist when the height of the liquid solution increased, namely when the height reached (0.0337 m). This is equivalent to liquid volume of 0.150 L. It means that the device capacity to remove ammonia has certain limitations based on liquid heights. The best condition for ammonia removal was obtained at 5% concentration and 0.080 L liquid volume (equivalent to 0.0165 m).
