Thermogravimetry-FTIR Analysis of Pyrolysis of Pyrolytic Lignin Extracted from Bio-Oil

In situ hydro-deoxygenation onto nickel-doped HZSM-5 zeolite catalyst for upgrading pyrolytic oil

Global energy demand has drastically increased due to urbanization and industrialization; thus, developing alternative renewable energy sources is urgently required. In the present work, upgrading the pyrolytic oil (PO) derived from fresh palm fruit was performed by the catalytic in situ hydrodeoxygenation (in situ HDO) process. Preparation of nickel-doped HZSM-5 zeolite (SiO2/Al2O3 = 40) was achieved by incipient wetness impregnation techniques using different weight percents of nickel dopant into HZSM-5. Nickel-doped HZSM-5 zeolite (Ni-HZSM-5) was further subjected to chemical reduction for 5 h in the oxygen-free environment (10% H2 and 90% N2) at 550 °C. The structural properties showed a potential reduction of NiO-HZSM-5 to Ni-HZSM-5, enhancing the catalytic potential. The morphological characterizations showed spherical-shaped Ni agglomerated onto HZSM-5. Acidity and oxygen contents in the pyrolytic oil were achieved by catalyst-aided HDO process at 220 °C for 6 h using methanol as a hydrogen donor. The catalytically upgraded pyrolytic oil (UPO) was analyzed for density, HHV, CHNO, and TGA. The best upgrading oil was distilled following ASTM D86 to separate gasoline, kerosene, and diesel. The acidity, density, HHV, and viscosity were measured before and after the upgradation processes. The results showed the potential impact of Ni with 10% doped on HZSM-5 on HDO reaction and illustrated the lowest oxygen content in upgraded pyrolytic oil products. Considerable decrease in viscosity and density level indicated that in situ HDO not only reduced oxygen content but also cracked pyrolytic oil to small molecules. The distilled product of upgrading oil was higher than pyrolytic oil by approximately 15% in volume. The viscosity, density, and HHV were under standard specifications of kerosene and diesel, except for acidity. However, the acidity was reduced by over 60% compared with raw material.

The removal of organic impurities from industrial waste salt by pyrolysis

The presence of organic impurities hinders the resource utilization of industrial waste salt (IWS). In this study, pyrolysis treatment was chosen to remove these organic impurities. The optimal process parameters for the pyrolysis of organic impurities were as follows: a temperature of 500 °C and a holding time of 20 min. Under these optimal conditions, the total organic carbon (TOC) removal rate was 96.32%, inducing a decrease in the TOC mass fraction from 1.88 to 0.08%. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) results obtained during this process showed that prolonging the pyrolysis time (10-70 min) for IWS resulted in a gradual decrease in the relative content of characteristic functional group, such as C-O in ether groups, and the disappearance of functional group, such as benzophenone carbonyl group and ester carbonyl. Organic impurities can release gas-containing compounds that destroy the initially smooth IWS surface, and the resulting particles with rough and irregular shapes fuse into large or lumpy particles during the pyrolysis process. GC‒MS results clearly showed that the number of different semivolatile organic compounds in the IWS was reduced from 35 to 19 as a result of the pyrolysis process. Correspondingly, organic impurities with molecular formulas containing 5-10 carbon atoms converted into compounds containing 6-20 carbon atoms. These findings provide theoretical support for IWS resource utilization.

Agro-residual biomass and disposable protective face mask: a merger for converting waste to plastic-fiber fuel via an integrative carbonization-pelletization framework

Incineration and landfilling offer possibilities for addressing high-rate management of COVID-waste streams. However, they can be costly and environmentally unsustainable. In addition, they do not allow to convert them to fuels and chemicals as waste-to-energy and waste-to-product technologies. Therefore, we analyzed whether integrating hydrothermal carbonization (HTC) and pelletization can allow converting the surgical face mask (SFM) and biomass to composite plastic-fiber fuel (CPFF). We blended the plastic material and corncob, peanut shell, or sugarcane bagasse at the proportion of 50:50 (%, dry mass basis) for HTC. We performed the thermal pretreatment of blends in an autoclaving reactor at 180 °C and 1.5 MPa. Then we pelletized the hydrochars in a presser machine at 200 MPa and 125 °C. By analyzing the evidence from our study, we recognized the viability of combining the SFM and agricultural residues for CPFF from comparable technical features of our products to standards for premium-grade wood pellets. For instance, the elemental composition of their low-meltable ash was not stoichiometrically sufficient to severely produce slagging and fouling in the equipment for thermal conversion. Although they contained synthetic polymers in their structures, such as polyethylene from filter layers and nylon from the earloop, they emitted CO and NOx below the critical limits of 200 and 500 mg m-3, respectively, for occupational safety. Therefore, we extended the knowledge on waste-to-energy pathways to transform SFM into high-quality hybrid fuel by carbonization and pelletization. Our framework can provide stakeholders opportunities to address plastic and biogenic waste in the context of a circular economy.

Investigation of organic impurity and its occurrence in industrial waste salt produced by physicochemical process

Industrial waste salt is classified as hazardous waste to the environment. The organic impurity and its occurrence in industrial waste salt affect the salt resource utilization. In this paper, composition quantitative analysis, XRD, TG-DSC, SEM/FIB-SEM coupled with EDS, FTIR, XPS and GC-Ms were chosen to investigate the organic impurity and its occurrence in industrial waste salt. The organic impurities owe small proportion (1.77%) in the specimen and exhibit weak thermal stability within the temperature of 600°C. A clear definition of organic impurity, including 11 kinds of organic compounds, including aldehyde, benzene and its derivatives etc., were detected in the industrial waste salt. These organic impurities, owing (C-O/C-O-C, C-OH/C = O, C–C/CH_x/C = C etc.)-containing function group substance, are mainly distributed both on the surface and inside of the salt particles. Meanwhile, the organic substance may combine with metal cations (Ni²⁺, Mg²⁺, Cu²⁺ etc.) through functional groups, such as hydroxide, carbonyl etc., which increases its stability in the industrial waste salt. These findings provide comprehensive information for the resource utilization of industrial waste salt from chemical industry etc.

On the Design of Novel Biofoams Using Lignin, Wheat Straw, and Sugar Beet Pulp as Precursor Material

In this paper, we report the synthesis and characterization of pyrolyzed lignin compacts reinforced with 50 wt % wheat straw (WS) or sugar beet pulp (SBP) fibers. The compacts were pyrolyzed at 300, 500, 700, and 900 °C in an Ar atmosphere. Detailed thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), thermomechanical analysis (TMA), Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, and microstructure analysis were performed on these samples. FTIR analysis showed that pyrolysis of lignin-WS and lignin-SBP resulted in aromatic char. Scanning electron microscope (SEM) studies showed that foams obtained by pyrolyzing both lignin-50 wt % SBP and lignin-50 wt % WS composites have a cellular structure. X-ray tomography and energy-dispersive spectrometry (EDS) studies showed that pyrolysis of wheat straw caused the formation of mineral-rich nodules in the pyrolyzed lignin matrix, which was responsible for the denser and uniform microstructure of the lignin-WS composites. Due to this reason, the lignin-WS composites were denser and had a better mechanical strength as compared to the lignin-SBP composites. Both the compositions also showed temperature-dependent wettability behavior.

Investigation on Conversion Pathways in Degradative Solvent Extraction of Rice Straw by Using Liquid Membrane-FTIR Spectroscopy

Degradative solvent extraction (DSE) is effective in both dewatering and upgrading biomass wastes through the selective removal of oxygen functional groups. However, this conversion mechanism has yet to be elucidated. Here, liquid membrane-FTIR spectroscopy was utilized to examine the main liquid product (Solvent-soluble) without sample modification. Rice straw (RS) and 1-methylnaphthalene (as a non-hydrogen donor solvent) were used as materials, and measurements were performed at treatment temperatures of 200, 250, 300, and 350 °C for 0 min, and at 350 °C for 60 min. The Solvent-soluble spectra were quantitatively analyzed, and changes in the oxygen-containing functional groups and hydrogen bonds at each temperature were used to characterize the DSE mechanism. It was determined that the DSE reaction process can be divided into three stages. During the first stage, 200–300 °C (0 min), oxygen was removed via dehydration, and aromaticity was observed. In the second stage, 300–350 °C (0 min), deoxygenation reactions involving dehydration and decarboxylation were followed by reactions for aromatization. For the third stage, 350 °C (0–60 min), further aromatization and dehydration reactions were observed. Intramolecular reactions are indicated as the predominant mechanism for dehydration in RS DSE, and the final product is composed of smaller molecular compounds.

Compositional insights and valorization pathways for carbonaceous material deposited during bio-oil thermal treatment

This work analyses the composition, morphology, and thermal behavior of the carbonaceous materials deposited during the thermal treatment of bio-oil (thermal pyrolytic lignin-TPL). The bio-oil was obtained by flash pyrolysis of lignocellulosic biomass (pine sawdust), and the TPLs were obtained in the 400-700 °C range. The TPLs were characterized by performing elemental analysis; (13)C NMR, Raman, FTIR, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy; SEM; and temperature-programmed oxidation analyzed by differential thermogravimetry and differential scanning calorimetry. The results are compared to a commercial lignin (CL). The TPLs have lower oxygen and hydrogen contents and a greater aromaticity and structural order than the CL material. Based on these features, different valorization routes are proposed: the TPL obtained at 500 °C is suitable for use as a fuel, and the TPL obtained at 700 °C has a suitable morphology and composition for use as an adsorbent or catalyst support.
