Abstract
In the field of molecular magnetism, the lanthanide-radical (Ln-Rad) method has become one of the most appealing tactics for introducing strong magnetic interactions and has spurred on the booming development of heterospin single-molecule magnets (SMMs). The article is a timely retrospect on the research progress of Ln-Rad heterospin systems and special attention is invested on low dimensional Ln-Rad compounds with SMM behavior, primarily concerning with nitrogen-based radicals, semiquinone and nitroxide radicals. Rational design, molecular structures, magnetic behaviors and magneto-structural correlations are highlighted. Meanwhile, particular attention is focused on the influence of exchange couplings on the dynamic magnetic properties, with the purpose of helping to guide the design of prospective radical-based Ln-SMMs.

Abstract
Employing a new nitronyl nitroxide biradical NITPhPzbis(NITPhPzbis = 5-(1-pyrazolyl)-1,3-bis(1’-oxyl-3’-oxido-4’,4’,5’,5’-tetramethyl-4,5-hydro-1H-imidazol-2-yl)benzene), a series of 2p-4f complexes [Ln2(hfac)6(H2O)(NITPhPzbis)] (LnIII = Gd1, Tb2, Dy3; hfac = hexafluoroacetylacetonate) were successfully synthesized. In complexes 1–3, the designed biradical NITPhPzbis coordinates with two LnIII ions in chelating and bridging modes to form a four-spin binuclear structure. Direct-current magnetic study of Gd analogue indicates that ferromagnetic exchange exists between the Gd ion and the radical while antiferromagnetic coupling dominates between two mono-radicals. Dynamic magnetic data show that the χ” signals of complex 3 exhibit frequency dependence under zero field, demonstrating slow magnetic relaxation behavior in complex 3. And the estimated values of Ueff and τ0 are about 8.4 K and 9.1 × 10−8 s, respectively.

Abstract
Long decoherence time is a key consideration for molecular magnets in the application of the quantum computation. Although previous studies have shown that the local symmetry of spin carriers plays a crucial part in the spin-lattice relaxation process, its role in the spin decoherence is still unclear. Herein, two nine-coordinated capped square antiprism neodymium moieties [Nd(CO3)4H2O]5– with slightly different local symmetries, C1 versus C4 (1 and 2), are reported, which feature in the easy-plane magnetic anisotropy as shown by the high-frequency electron paramagnetic resonance (HF-EPR) studies. Detailed analysis of the relaxation time suggests that the phonon bottleneck effect is essential to the magnetic relaxation in the crystalline samples of 1 and 2. The 240 GHz Pulsed EPR studies show that the higher symmetry results in longer decoherence times, which is supported by the first principle calculations. Neodymium-based complexes show the spin decoherence without the magnetic dilution The higher structural symmetry results in longer spin decoherence times The phonon bottleneck effect induces the slow magnetization relaxation behaviors

Abstract
Profiting from a multicoordinating nitronyl nitroxide radical, i.e. a functionalized nitronyl nitroxide biradical ligand, a family of novel tetranuclear lanthanide complexes, formulated as [RE4(hfac)12(NITPhO-3Pybis)2] (RE = Gd 1, Tb 2, Dy 3, Ho 4, and Y 5; NITPhO-3Pybis = 5-(3-pyridinyloxy)-1,3-bis(1'-oxyl-3'-oxido-4',4',5',5'-tetramethyl-4,5-hydro-1H-imidazol-2-yl)benzene; hfac = hexafluoroacetylacetonate) were successfully constructed and characterized. In these complexes, the designed functionalized nitronyl nitroxide biradical ligand functions as the chelating and/or bridging ligand to bind the lanthanide ions, resulting in tetranuclear octa-spin lanthanide complexes with a circle-shaped arrangement. Direct-current magnetic data show that antiferromagnetic interaction dominates in the Gd derivative, while ferromagnetic coupling plays a leading role in complex Y, in which the relevant magnetic exchange parameters were obtained through applicable magnetic models. Dynamic magnetic studies of Tb and Dy analogues exhibit apparent frequency-dependent out-of-phase signals, which are typical features for slow magnetic relaxation behavior. The values of Ueff and τ0 were obtained as follows: Ueff = 10.5 K and τ0 = 6.6 × 10-7 s for the Tb complex and Ueff = 5.2 K and τ0 = 2.5 × 10-6 s for the Dy compound. Intriguingly, the butterfly shaped hysteresis loop is found for the Tb analogue. Guided by fluorescence spectra, the representative peaks are identified for the Tb derivative.

Abstract
Semiquinoid radical bridging ligands are capable of mediating exceptionally strong magnetic coupling between spin centers, a requirement for the design of high-temperature magnetic materials. We demonstrate the ability of sulfur donors to provide much stronger coupling relative to their oxygen congeners in a series of dinuclear complexes. Employing a series of chalcogen donor-based bis(bidentate) benzoquinoid bridging ligands, the series of complexes [(TPyA)2Cr2(RL4-)]2+ (OLH4 = 1,2,4,5-tetrahydroxybenzene, OSLH4 = 1,2-dithio-4,5-dihydroxybenzene, SLH4 = 1,2,4,5-tetrathiobenzene, TPyA = tris(2-pyridylmethyl)amine) was synthesized. Variable-temperature dc magnetic susceptibility data reveal the presence of weak antiferromagnetic superexchange coupling between CrIII centers in these complexes, with exchange constants of J = -2.83(3) (OL4-), -2.28(5) (OSL4-), and -1.80(2) (SL4-) cm-1. Guided by cyclic voltammetry and spectroelectrochemical measurements, chemical one-electron oxidation of these complexes gives the radical-bridged species [(TPyA)2Cr2(RL3-•)]3+. Variable-temperature dc susceptibility measurements in these complexes reveal the presence of strong antiferromagnetic metal-semiquinoid radical coupling, with exchange constants of J = -352(10) (OL3-•), - 401(8) (OSL3-•), and -487(8) (SL3-•) cm-1. These results provide the first measurement of magnetic coupling between metal ions and a thiosemiquinoid radical, and they demonstrate the value of moving from O to S donors in radical-bridged metal ions in the design of magnetic molecules and materials.

Abstract
Herein we report the first examples of single-molecule magnet (SMM) behaviour in S = 1/2 Ni(iii) complexes. We find that low-spin 3d7 trans-[NiIII(cyclam)(X)2]Y complexes (cyclam = 1,4,8,11-tetraazacyclotetradecane; X and Y are singly charged anions) exhibit field-induced slow relaxation of magnetization for O-donor axial ligands (nitrate) but not for N-donor variants (isothiocyanate). Experimental and electronic structure computational investigations indicate that intrinsic spin polarisation of low-spin Ni(iii) is modulated significantly by local coordination geometry and supramolecular interactions. Solid state dilution of Ni(iii) with diamagnetic Co(iii) ions forms a related complex salt, [Ni x Co1-x (cyclam)(NO3)2](NO3)·2HNO3 (0.1 < x < 1), which preserves slow magnetic dynamics, thus supporting a molecular component to slow relaxation. An initial analysis of magnetic relaxation lifetime fits best to a combination of Raman and direct relaxation processes.

Abstract
Quantum tunneling and relaxation of magnetization in single molecule magnet DySc2N@C80 is thoroughly studied as a function of magnetic dilution, temperature, and magnetic field.
Relaxation of magnetization in endohedral metallofullerenes DySc2N@C80 is studied at different temperatures, in different magnetic fields, and in different molecular arrangements. Magnetization behavior and relaxation are analyzed for powder sample, and for DySc2N@C80 diluted in non-magnetic fullerene Lu3N@C80, adsorbed in voids of a metal–organic framework, and dispersed in a polymer. The magnetic field dependence and zero-field relaxation are also studied for single-crystals of DySc2N@C80 co-crystallized with Ni(ii) octaethylporphyrin, as well as for the single crystal diluted with Lu3N@C80. Landau–Zener theory is applied to analyze quantum tunneling of magnetization in the crystals. The field dependence of relaxation rates revealed a dramatic dependence of the zero-field tunneling resonance width on the dilution and is explained with the help of an analysis of dipolar field distributions. AC magnetometry is used then to get access to the relaxation of magnetization in a broader temperature range, from 2 to 87 K. Finally, a theoretical framework describing the spin dynamics with dissipation is proposed to study magnetization relaxation phenomena in single molecule magnets.

Abstract
The reaction of Mn(BF4 )2 ⋅x H2 O with (Pr4 N)2 TCNQF4 (TCNQF4 =2,3,5,6-tetrafluoro-7,7,8,8-tetracyanoquinodimethane) in a mixture of CH3 OH/CH2 Cl2 gives a 2:3 stoichiometric complex of (Pr4 N)2 [Mn2 (TCNQF4 )3 (CH3 OH)2 ] (1). If the solvent system used for the crystallisation of 1 is changed to CH3 OH/DMF, then a different product, [Mn(TCNQF4 )(DMF)2 ]⋅(CH3 OH)2 (2), is obtained. The use of Li2 TCNQF4 instead of (Pr4 N)2 TCNQF4 leads to the generation of [Mn2 (TCNQF4 )2 (DMF)4 ]⋅3 DMF (3). An unexpected mixed oxidation state network with a composition of [MnII 4 MnIII 16 O10 (OH)6 (OCH3 )24 (TCNQF4 )2 ](NO3 )2 ⋅24 CH3 OH (4), is formed if Mn(NO3 )2 ⋅x H2 O is used in place of Mn(BF4 )2 ⋅x H2 O in the reaction that leads to the formation of 3. Compounds 1-3 have been characterised by X-ray crystallography; FTIR, Raman and UV/Vis spectroscopy; and electrochemistry. Compound 4 has only been analysed by X-ray crystallography and vibrational spectroscopy (Raman, FTIR), owing to rapid deterioration of the compound upon exposure to air. These results indicate that relatively minor changes in reaction conditions have the potential to yield products with vastly different structures. Compound 1 adopts an anionic 2D network with unusual π-stacked dimers of the TCNQF4 2- dianion, whereas 2 and 3 are composed of similar neutral sheets of [Mn(TCNQF4 )(DMF)2 ]. Interestingly, the solvent has a significant influence on the stacking of the sheets in the structures of 2 and 3. In compound 4, clusters with a composition of [MnII 4 MnIII 16 O10 (OH)6 (OCH3 )24 (CH3 OH)4 ]6+ serve as eight-connecting nodes, whereas TCNQF4 2- ligands act as four-connecting nodes in a 3D network that has the same topology as fluorite. Compound 3 exhibits an exceptionally high super-catalytic activity for the electron-transfer reaction between ferricyanide and thiosulfate ions in aqueous media.

Abstract
UNLABELLED The spin dynamics of Tb(OETAP)2 single ion magnets was investigated by means of muon spin relaxation (μSR) both in the bulk material as well as when the molecule is embedded into PEDOT PSS polymer conductor. The spin fluctuation time is characterized by a high temperature activated trend, with an energy barrier around 320 K, and by a low temperature tunneling regime. When the single ion magnet is embedded into the polymer the energy barrier only slightly decreases and the fluctuation time remains of the same order of magnitude, even at low temperature. This finding shows that these single molecule magnets preserve their characteristics which, if combined with those of the conducting polymer, result in a hybrid material of potential interest for organic spintronics.

Abstract
The reaction of 2-methoxy-6-(pyridine-2-yl-hydrazonomethyl) phenol (LH) with lanthanide(iii) salts (Gd, Tb, Dy, Ho and Er) in the presence of an excess of triethylamine afforded a series of non-planar heptanuclear homometallic complexes. The Gd(iii) analogue shows good MCE behaviour (−ΔSm(T) = 27.7 J kg−1 K−1 at 3 K over 0–7 T).

Abstract
Double-decker complexes of lanthanide cations can be readily prepared with tetraazaporphyrins (porphyrazines). We have synthesized and characterized a series of neutral double-decker complexes [Ln(OETAP)2 ] (Ln=Tb(3+), Dy(3+), Gd(3+), Y(3+); OETAP=octa(ethyl)tetraazaporphyrin). Some of these complexes show analogous magnetic features to their phthalocyanine (Pc) counterparts. The Tb(3+) and Dy(3+) derivatives exhibit single-molecule magnet (SMM) behavior with high blocking temperatures over 50 and 10 K, respectively. These results confirm that, in double-decker complexes that involve Tb or Dy, the (N4)2 square antiprism coordination mode has an important role in inducing very large activation energies for magnetization reversal. In contrast with their Pc counterparts, the use of tetraazaporphyrin ligands endows the presented [Ln(OETAP)2] complexes with extraordinary chemical versatility. The double-decker complexes that exhibit SMM behavior are highly soluble in common organic solvents, and easily processable even through sublimation.

Abstract
An unusual dinuclear Yb(2) complex isolated using a mixed ligand strategy leads to field-induced SMM behaviour. Low magnetic axiality and a large tunnelling gap lead to significant quantum tunnelling of the magnetisation, which was reduced under an applied static optimum field of 1600 Oe.

Abstract
The synthesis and magnetic properties of three new bipyrimidyl radical-bridged dilanthanide complexes, [(Cp*(2)Ln)(2)(μ-bpym(•))](+) (Ln = Gd, Tb, Dy), are reported. Strong Ln(III)-bpym(•-) exchange coupling is observed for all species, as indicated by the increases in χ(M)T at low temperatures. For the Gd(III)-containing complex, a fit to the data reveals antiferromagnetic coupling with J = -10 cm(-1) to give an S = (13)/(2) ground state. The Tb(III) and Dy(III) congeners show single-molecule magnet behavior with relaxation barriers of U(eff) = 44(2) and 87.8(3) cm(-1), respectively, a consequence of the large magnetic anisotropies imparted by these ions. Significantly, the latter complex exhibits a divergence of the field-cooled and zero-field-cooled dc susceptibility data at 6.5 K and magnetic hysteresis below this temperature.

Abstract
Exchange coupling is quantified in lanthanide (Ln) single-molecule magnets (SMMs) containing a bridging N(2)(3-) radical ligand and between [Cp*(2)Yb](+) and bipy(•-) in Cp*(2)Yb(bipy), where Cp* is pentamethylcyclopentadienyl and bipy is 2,2'-bipyridyl. In the case of these lanthanide SMMs, the magnitude of exchange coupling between the Ln ion and the bridging N(2)(3-), 2J, is very similar to the barrier to magnetic relaxation, U(eff). A molecular version of the Hubbard model is applied to systems in which unpaired electrons on magnetic metal ions have direct overlap with unpaired electrons residing on ligands. The Hubbard model explicitly addresses electron correlation, which is essential for understanding the magnetic behavior of these complexes. This model is applied quantitatively to Cp*(2)Yb(bipy) to explain its very strong exchange coupling, 2J = -0.11 eV (-920 cm(-1)). The model is also used to explain the presence of strong exchange coupling in Ln SMMs in which the lanthanide spins are coupled via bridging N(2)(3-) radical ligands. The results suggest that increasing the magnetic coupling in lanthanide clusters could lead to an increase in the blocking temperatures of exchange-coupled lanthanide SMMs, suggesting routes to rational design of future lanthanide SMMs.

Abstract
The Ph(4)P(+) salt of the tetrahedral complex [Co(SPh)(4)](2-), possessing an S = (3)/(2) ground state with an axial zero-field splitting of D = -70 cm(-1), displays single-molecule magnet behavior in the absence of an applied magnetic field. At very low temperatures, ac magnetic susceptibility data show the magnetic relaxation time, τ, to be temperature-independent, while above 2.5 K thermally activated Arrhenius behavior is apparent with U(eff) = 21(1) cm(-1) and τ(0) = 1.0(3) × 10(-7) s. Under an applied field of 1 kOe, τ more closely approximates Arrhenius behavior over the entire temperature range. Upon dilution of the complex within a matrix of the isomorphous compound (Ph(4)P)(2)[Zn(SPh)(4)], ac susceptibility data reveal the molecular nature of the slow magnetic relaxation and indicate that the quantum tunneling pathway observed at low temperatures is likely mediated by intermolecular dipolar interactions.

Abstract
Molecular magnetism is a new and extremely fascinating field on the borders of chemistry, physics and materials science. The design and synthesis of molecule-based magnets requires the chemist to exert considerable control over the molecules to arrange them appropriately. It also demands the development of new theories to explain the complex magneto-structural behaviour of these intriguing solids. Molecular magnetism is still at a very early stage of development. The main challenge is to increase the strength of the magnetic interactions between spin carriers so the resulting materials can be usable at room temperature. However molecular magnets exhibit true potential to become multifunctional materials. They show some considerable advantages over conventional magnets: optical transparency, chemical sensitivity and low weight to name just a few. The following article is not a complete review of the field. Its aim is rather to show how beautiful and versatile magnetic molecular solids can be, and to encourage the in-depth study of the subject.
