Abstract
A general and expedient method to construct the scaffolds of 2-alkenylpyridines, through copper-catalyzed C2 alkenylation of pyridine-N-oxides with alkynes, has been disclosed. This protocol shows operational simplicity, good functional group compatibility and broad substrate scope.

Abstract
Azine-containing biaryls are ubiquitous scaffolds in many areas of chemistry, and efficient methods for their synthesis are continually desired. Pyridine rings are prominent amongst these motifs. Transition-metal-catalysed cross-coupling reactions have been widely used for their synthesis and functionalisation as they often provide a swift and tuneable route to related biaryl scaffolds. However, 2-pyridine organometallics are capricious coupling partners and 2-pyridyl boron reagents in particular are notorious for their instability and poor reactivity in Suzuki-Miyaura cross-coupling reactions. The synthesis of pyridine-containing biaryls is therefore limited, and methods for the formation of unsymmetrical 2,2'-bis-pyridines are scarce. This Review focuses on the methods developed for the challenging coupling of 2-pyridine nucleophiles with (hetero)aryl electrophiles, and ranges from traditional cross-coupling processes to alternative nucleophilic reagents and novel main group approaches.

Abstract
An allylarylation of electron-deficient alkenes with aryl boronates and allylic carbonates has been developed. This method allows access to a wide variety of carbon skeletons from readily available starting materials. Mechanistic studies indicate that this reaction is enabled by a cooperative catalysis based on merging Pd0 /PdII redox and PdII /PdII non-redox catalytic cycles.

Abstract
The syntheses of 4'-substituted chiral 2,2':6',2″-terpyridine (tpy) ligands with predetermined configurations and directionalities are rather limited in the supramolecular chemistry field. In this study, a carbazole-linked ditopic chiral ligand L was synthesized using 4'-bromo-substituted pineno-fused tpy 5 as the precursor. Upon complexation with Cd(NO3)2·4H2O and Zn(NO3)2·6H2O, two enantiomerically pure metallosupramolecules, [Cd3L3] and [Zn4L4], have been self-assembled and characterized by NMR, electrospray ionization-mass spectrometry, traveling wave ion mobility-mass spectrometry, and DOSY analysis. In addition, their optical properties are characterized by UV-vis, fluorescence, circular dichroism, and circularly polarized luminescence, suggesting an efficiency transmission and amplification of chirality from the ligand to metal center via self-assembly.

Abstract
In this study, two new terpyridine-based EuIII complexes were synthesized, the structures of which were optimized for luminescence resonance energy-transfer (LRET) experiments. The complexes showed high quantum yields (32 %); a single long lifetime (1.25 ms), which was not influenced by coupling to protein; very high stability in the presence of chelators such as ethylenediamine-N,N,N',N'-tetraacetate and ethylene glycol-bis(2-aminoethylether)-N,N,N',N'-tetraacetic acid; and no interaction with cofactors such as adenosine triphosphate and guanosine triphosphate. A special feature is the short length of the linker between the EuIII ion and the maleimide or hydrazide function, which allows for site-specific coupling of cysteine mutants or unnatural keto amino acids. As a consequence, the new complexes appear particularly suited for accurate distance measurements in biomolecules by LRET.

Abstract
The palladium-catalyzed directed C-H halogenation of bipyridine N-oxides was investigated. Using NCS or NBS (N-chloro- or N-bromosuccinimide) and 5 mol % Pd(OAc)2 in chlorobenzene (0.10 molar) at 110 °C, pyridine-directed functionalization took place and 3-chloro- or 3-bromobipyridine N-oxides were obtained in high yields. The reaction is sensitive to steric hindrance by 4- and 6'-substituents. Only in the latter case, where coordination of palladium by the pyridine is hindered, 3'-halogenation directed by the N-oxide function was observed. The halogenated products were deoxygenated by PCl3 or PBr3.

Abstract
The scope of a flexible route to unsymmetrically functionalized bipyridines is described. Starting from 1,3-diketones 1a–e, the corresponding β-ketoenamines 2a–e were converted into different β-ketoenamides 3a–g by N-acylation with 2-pyridinecarboxylic acid derivatives. These β-ketoenamides were treated with a mixture of TMSOTf and Hünig’s base to promote the cyclocondensation to 4-hydroxypyridine derivatives. Their immediate O-nonaflation employing nonafluorobutanesulfonyl fluoride provided the expected 4-nonafloxy-substituted bipyridine derivatives 5a–g in moderate to good overall yields. The bipyridyl nonaflates are excellent precursors for palladium-catalyzed reactions as demonstrated by representative Suzuki and Sonogashira couplings. Thus, a library of specifically substituted bipyridine derivatives was generated, showing the versatility of the simple 1,3-diketone-based approach to this important class of ligands.

Abstract
Eight [Ir(bpy)Cp*Cl](+) -type complexes (bpy= bipyridine, Cp*=1,2,3,4,5-pentamethylcyclopentadienyl) containing differently substituted bipyridine ligands were synthesized and characterized. Cyclic voltammetry (CV) of the complexes in Ar-saturated acetonitrile solutions showed that the redox behavior of the complexes could be fine tuned by the electronic properties of the substituted bipyridine ligands. Further CV in CO2 -saturated MeCN/H2 O (9:1, v/v) solutions showed catalytic currents for CO2 reduction. In controlled potential electrolysis experiments (MeCN/MeOH (1:1, v/v), Eapp =-1.80 V vs Ag/AgCl), all of the complexes showed moderate activity in the electrocatalytic reduction of CO2 with good stability over at least 15 hours. This electrocatalytic process was selective toward formic acid, with only traces of dihydrogen or carbon monoxide and occasionally formaldehyde as byproducts. However, the turnover frequencies and current efficiencies were quite low. No direct correlation between the redox potentials of the complexes and their catalytic activity was observed.

Abstract
![]()
Alkylated
terpyridine ligands are an increasingly important component
of catalysis and dyes but are costly because their synthesis is challenging
and often low-yielding. We report an improved method for the Pd/C-catalyzed
dehydrogenative coupling of 4-picoline to form the bi- and terpyridine.
The addition of MnO2 improves the yield of the reaction,
making the reaction useful on a large scale (up to 200 mmol). The
use of Pd(OAc)2 or Pd/C/pivalic acid leads to the selective
formation of bipyridine.
