Abstract
Inspired by the prominent redox and optical properties of natural flavins, synthetic flavins have found broad applications in organic, photochemical, and biochemical research. Tailoring these properties of flavins, however, remains a challenge. In this work, we present three pentacyclic flavins (C-PF, O-PF, and S-PF) that leverage a strategic molecular design to modify the flavin's electronic structure. Notably, the oxygen- and sulfur-linked pentacyclic flavins (O-PF and S-PF) exhibit deep-red and NIR emission, respectively, driven by enhanced π-conjugation, substituent effects, and charge separation upon excitation. These heteroatom-incorporated pentacyclic flavins exhibit unusual quasi-reversible oxidation, expanding both optical and redox limits of synthetic flavins. Comprehensive spectroscopic, structural, and computational analyses reveal how heteroatom incorporation within this five-ring-fused system unlocks redox and optical properties of flavin-derived chromophores.

Abstract
The absorption and emission spectra were investigated for lumazine, alloxazine and their cyanated or fluorinated derivatives, respectively. The spectroscopic properties were modulated by varying water concentration in dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO). Some intriguing experimental results were found for the samples containing 65 % of water and 35% of DMSO. This finding is consistent with previously published molecular dynamics (MD) simulations confirming the concept of the 'local bulk' model. In this case, a notable decrease in absorption and emission intensities was registered, even larger than the water quenching observed in other cases. The changes in midrange DMSO concentrations could be explained by the formation of local solvents structures as predicted by MD, specifically the formation of DMSO·2H2O dimers. Experimentally, the cyano-substituted lumazine has shown a remarkable sensitivity to DMSO concentration. The spectroscopic measurements were interpreted using the density functional theory where the implicit DMSO solvent model was combined with explicit water molecules. Together with its enhanced water solubility, the cyanated lumazine derivate could be used for non-destructive DMSO detection in vitro for applications such as drug uptake monitoring, since DMSO is often used in pharmaceutical practice.

Abstract
Herein, we report the design and synthesis of an amphiphilic flavin analogue as a robust low molecular weight gelator involving minimal structural modification. Four flavin analogues were evaluated for their gelation capabilities and the flavin analogue with antipodal positioning of the carboxyl and octyl functionalities was found to be the most efficient gelator with the minimum gelation concentration being as low as 0.03 M. A wide range of solvents were used for gelation studies suggesting its widespread applicability. Morphological, photophysical and rheological characterization studies were performed to fully characterize the nature of the gel. Interestingly, reversible multiple stimuli responsive sol-gel transition was observed with changing pH and redox activity, while metal screening showed specific transition in the presence of ferric ions. The gel was able to differentiate between ferric and ferrous species with well-defined sol-gel transition. The current results potentially offer a redox-active flavin-based material as a low molecular weight gelator for the development of next-generation materials.

Abstract
When studying electrochemical oxygen reduction reactions in homogeneous media, special attention must be given to the significant background activity present with conventional electrode materials. The intrinsic electrocatalytic activity of different materials can be investigated using complementary methods, such as the rotating ring-disc electrode (RRDE) technique and chronoamperometric electrolysis with product quantification. This report presents a detailed investigation of the electrocatalytic ability of hydroxy anthraquinone derivatives and riboflavin towards hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) production via a novel RRDE subtraction method together with chronoamperometric electrolysis. Qualitative trends linking the two methods were obtained, such as a higher excess current correlating with both higher productivity and selectivity. As such, a valuable tool is provided to increase the understanding of the electrocatalytic ability of homogeneous solutions toward improving the oxygen reduction reaction.

Abstract
A new flavin‐based gelator is reported which forms micellar structures at high pH and gels at low pH. This flavin can be used for the photooxidation of thiols under visible light, with the catalytic efficiency being linked to the self‐assembled structures present.

Abstract
We report an effective, operationally simple, and environmentally friendly system for the synthesis of tertiary amides by the oxidative coupling of aromatic or aliphatic aldehydes with amines mediated by riboflavin tetraacetate (RFTA), an inexpensive organic photocatalyst, and visible light using oxygen as the sole oxidant. The method is based on the oxidative power of an excited flavin catalyst and the relatively low oxidation potential of the hemiaminal formed by amine to aldehyde addition.

Abstract
Goal of sustainable carbon neutral economy can be achieved by designing an efficient CO2 reduction system to generate biofuels, in particular, by mimicking the mechanism of natural photosynthesis using semiconducting nanomaterials interfaced with electroactive bacteria (EAB) in a photosynthetic microbial electrosynthesis (PMES) system. This review paper presents an overview of the recent advancements in the biohybrid photoanode and photocathode materials. We discuss the reaction mechanism observed at photoanode and photocathode to enhance our understanding on the solar driven MES. We extend the discussion by showcasing the potential activity of EABs toward high selectivity and production rates for desirable products by manipulating their genomic sequence. Additionally, the critical challenges associated in scaling up the PMES system including the strategies for diminution of reactive oxygen species, low solubility of CO2 in the typical electrolytes, low selectivity of product species are presented along with the suggestions of alternative strategies to achieve economically viable generation of (bio)commodities.

Abstract
Monitoring pH within microbial reactors has become an important requirement across a host of applications ranging from the production of functional foods (probiotics) to biofuel cell systems. An inexpensive and scalable composite sensor capable of monitoring the pH within the demanding environments posed by microbial reactors has been developed. A custom designed flavin derivative bearing an electropolymerisable phenol monomer was used to create a redox film sensitive to pH but free from the interferences that can impede conventional pH systems. The film was integrated within a composite carbon-fibre-polymer laminate and was shown to exhibit Nernstian behaviour (55 mV/pH) with minimal drift and robust enough to operate within batch reactors.
