In Silico Design and Characterization of a New Molecular Electride: Li@Calix[3]Pyrrole

Electrides, in which anionic electrons are localized independently of the atoms in the compound, have shown promise, especially as catalysts and optoelectronic materials. Here, we present a new computationally designed molecular electride, Li@calix[3]pyrrole (Li@C3P). Electron density and electron localization function analyses unequivocally confirm the existence of localized electride electron density, outside the system, independent of any specific atoms. Non-covalent interaction plots further validate the character of the isolated localized electron, suggesting that the system can be accurately represented by Li+@calix[3]pyrrole ⋅ e-, denoting its distinct charge separation. The remarkable non-linear optical properties of Li@C3P, including average polarizability,α ‾ ${\bar{\alpha }}$ =412.4 au, first hyperpolarizability, β=4.46×104 au, and second hyperpolarizability,γ ∥ ${{\gamma }_{\parallel }}$ =18.40×106 au, are unparalleled in the previously reported and similar Li@C4P molecular electride. Furthermore, energy decomposition analysis in combination with natural orbital for chemical valence theory sheds light on the mechanism of electron density transfer from Li to the C3P cage, yielding the charge-separated Li@C3P complex. In addition to the electron transfer, a key factor to its electride nature is the electronic structure of the CnP cage, which has its lowest unoccupied molecular orbital located in the void adjacent to the N-H groups at the back of the bowl-shaped CnP cage.

On the Electride Nature of Na-hP4

Early quantum mechanical models suggested that pressure drives solids towards free-electron metal behavior where the ions are locked into simple close-packed structures. The prediction and subsequent discovery of high-pressure electrides (HPEs), compounds assuming open structures where the valence electrons are localized in interstitial voids, required a paradigm shift. Our quantum chemical calculations on the iconic insulating Na-hP4 HPE show that increasing density causes a 3s→3pd electronic transition due to Pauli repulsion between the 1s2s and 3s states, and orthogonality of the 3pd states to the core. The large lobes of the resulting Na-pd hybrid orbitals point towards the center of an 11-membered penta-capped trigonal prism and overlap constructively, forming multicentered bonds, which are responsible for the emergence of the interstitial charge localization in Na-hP4. These multicentered bonds facilitate the increased density of this phase, which is key for its stabilization under pressure.

New kind of electride sandwich complexes based on the cyclooctatetraene ligand M12(η8-C8H8)2M22 (M1 = Na, K and M2 = Ca, Mg): a theoretical study

In the present study, the electronic structures of a series of binuclear sandwich complexes based on the cyclooctatetraene ligand M¹₂(η⁸-C₈H₈)₂M²₂ (M¹ = Na, K and M² = Ca, Mg) are studied theoretically. Each cyclooctatetraene ligand binds with the metal in the η⁸ binding mode. The M²-M² bond length agrees well with the reported bimetallic covalent Ca₂ and Mg₂ bond lengths. The Wiberg bond index (WBI) also indicates the presence of covalent M²-M² bonds, which gives additional stability to the complex. A non-nuclear attractor (NNA) is found in-between the M²-M² bond and the negative Laplacian of the electron density is found at the NNA. Noncovalent interaction (NCI) plot shows that electron density is localized at the M²-M² bond. Based on the performed analysis, we have concluded that the designed sandwich complexes are electrides. We herein report, for the first time, the electride sandwich complexes of the cyclooctatetraene ligand. Due to the presence of a diffuse electron system, the electride complexes exhibit higher values of the static second hyperpolarizability within the range of 2.6 × 10⁵ to 1.4 × 10⁶ a.u. Among the studied complexes, M¹₂(η⁸-C₈H₈)₂Ca₂ exhibit a higher value of static second hyperpolarizability.

Molecular Electrides: An In Silico Perspective

Electrides are defined as the ionic compounds where the electron(s) serves as an anion. These electron(s) is (are) not bound to any atoms, bonds, or molecules rather than they are localized into the space, crystal voids, or interlayer between two molecular slabs. There are three major categories of electrides, known as organic electriades, inorganic electrides, and molecular electrides. The computational techniques have proven as a great tool to provide emphasis on the electride materials. In this review, we have focused on the computational methodologies and criteria that help to characterize molecular electrides. A detailed account of the computational methods and basis sets applicable for molecular electrides have been discussed along with their limitation(s) in this field. The main criterion for the identification of the electrides has also been discussed thoroughly with proper examples. The molecular electrides presented here have been justified with all the required criteria that support and proved their electride characteristics. We have also presented a few systems which have similar properties but are not considered as molecular electrides. Moreover, the applicability of the electrides in catalytic processes has also been presented.

How Many Electrons Does a Molecular Electride Hold?

Electrides are very peculiar ionic compounds where electrons occupy the anionic positions. In a crystal lattice, these isolated electrons often form channels or surfaces, furnishing electrides with many traits with promising technological applications. Despite their huge potential, thus far, only a few stable electrides have been produced because of the intricate synthesis they entail. Due to the difficulty in assessing the presence of isolated electrons, the characterization of electrides also poses some serious challenges. In fact, their properties are expected to depend on the arrangement of these electrons in the molecule. Among the criteria that we can use to characterize electrides, the presence of a non-nuclear attractor (NNA) of the electron density is both the rarest and the most salient feature. Therefore, a correct description of the NNA is crucial to determine the properties of electrides. In this paper, we analyze the NNA and the surrounding region of nine molecular electrides to determine the number of isolated electrons held in the electride. We have seen that the correct description of a molecular electride hinges on the electronic structure method employed for the analyses. In particular, one should employ a basis set with sufficient flexibility to describe the region close to the NNA and a density functional approximation that does not suffer from large delocalization errors. Finally, we have classified these nine molecular electrides according to the most likely number of electrons that we can find in the NNA. We believe this classification highlights the strength of the electride character and will prove useful in designing new electrides.

Li8 Si8 , Li10 Si9 , and Li12 Si10 : Assemblies of Lithium-Silicon Aromatic Units

We report the global minima structures of Li₈ Si₈ , Li₁₀ Si₉ , and Li₁₂ Si₁₀ systems, in which silicon moieties maintain structural and chemical bonding characteristics similar to those of their building blocks: the aromatic clusters T_d -Li₄ Si₄ and C_2v -Li₆ Si₅ . Electron counting rules, chemical bonding analysis, and magnetic response properties verify the silicon unit's aromaticity persistence. This study demonstrates the feasibility of assembling silicon-based nanostructures from aromatics clusters as building blocks.

Electride Characteristics of Some Binuclear Sandwich Complexes of Alkaline Earth Metals, M2(η5-L)2 (M = Be, Mg; L = C5H5-, N5-, P5-, As5-)

Ab initio calculations have been performed for a series of binuclear sandwich complexes, M₂(η⁵-L)₂. It has been observed that the eclipsed and staggered conformations have almost equal amount of energies. The M-M bond lengths are comparable with those in the free M₂ molecules (M = Be, Mg). The nuclear-independent chemical shift (NICS) values indicate the aromaticity of these complexes. The stability of Be₂(η⁵-L)₂ complexes is higher than that of the Mg₂(η⁵-L)₂ complexes. The natural bond orbital (NBO) analysis and electron density descriptors proved the existence of a single covalent M-M bond in an M₂²⁺ fragment. It has been observed that each M-M bond contains a non-nuclear attractor (NNA) at the center of the respective bond. The Laplacian of electron density [∇²ρ(r)] is negative at the NNAs. The energy decomposition analysis (EDA) showed that M₂²⁺ and 2L^- represent the bonding interaction in the complexes. All of the designed binuclear sandwich complexes behave as electrides.

Electric field induced intra-molecular self-redox: superalkali Li3N3Mg as a candidate for NLO molecular switches

A novel intra-molecular self-redox switch, Li₃N₃Mg, is constructed theoretically. Our investigation showed that a suitably oriented external electric field (OEEF) can drive a long-range excess electron transfer from Mg atoms to Li₃ rings. And subsequently, an interesting intra-molecular self-redox from Li₃²⁺N₃^3-Mg⁺ to Li₃⁺N₃^3-Mg²⁺ accompanying the large different electronic static first hyperpolarizability (β) is exhibited. The increase of the β value constitutes an order of magnitude improvement from Li₃²⁺N₃^3-Mg⁺ (34 986 a.u.) to Li₃⁺N₃^3-Mg²⁺ (101 225 a.u.), which indicates that Li₃N₃Mg is a good candidate for a self-redox NLO molecular switch.

Open-shell jellium aromaticity in metal clusters

The 2N2 + 2N + 1 with S = N + 1/2 rule represented the extension to open-shell spherical compounds of the 2(N + 1)2 Hirsch rule for spherical aromatic species. In this work, we provide evidence that the jellium model with its magic numbers can also be extended to open-shell half-filled systems.

Formation of the quasi-planar B50 boron cluster: topological path from B10 and disk aromaticity

The lowest-lying isomer of the B50 boron cluster is confirmed to have a quasi-planar shape with two hexagonal holes. By applying a topological (leap-frog) dual operation followed by boron capping, we demonstrated that such a quasi-planar structure actually comes from the smallest elongated B102-, and its high thermodynamic stability is due to its inherent disk aromaticity arising from its 32 valent π electrons that fully occupy a disk configuration of [(1σ)2(1π)4(1δ)4(2σ)2(1φ)4(2π)4(1γ)4(2δ)4(1η)4]. The aromatic character of the quasi-planar B50 is further supported by a strong diatropic magnetic current flow. The sudden appearance of a quasi-planar B50 again points out that the growth pattern of pure boron clusters is still far from being completely understood.

Theoretical study of substituent effects on electride characteristics and the nonlinear optical properties of Li@calix[4]pyrrole

A relationship between the electride characteristics and the NLO properties is found: the more delocalization the excess electron of the electride experiences, the larger the β₀ value is.
