Carbocatalytic Oxidative Dehydrogenative Couplings of (Hetero)Aryls by Oxidized Multi‐Walled Carbon Nanotubes in Liquid Phase

Tailoring surface carboxyl groups of mesoporous carbon boosts electrochemical H2O2 production

Oxygen-doped porous carbon materials have been shown promising performance for electrochemical two-electron oxygen reduction reaction (2e^- ORR), an efficient approach for the safe and continuous on-site generation of H₂O₂. The regulation and mechanism understanding of active oxygen-containing functional groups (OFGs) remain great challenges. Here, OFGs modified porous carbon were prepared by thermal oxidation (MC-12-Air), HNO₃ oxidation (MC-12-HNO₃) and H₂O₂ solution hydrothermal treatment (MC-12-H₂O₂), respectively. Structural characterization showed that the oxygen doping content of three catalysts reached about 20%, with the almost completely maintained specific surface area (exception of MC-12- HNO₃). Spectroscopic characterization further revealed that hydroxyl groups are mainly introduced into MC-12-Air, while carboxyl groups are mainly introduced into MC-12- HNO₃ and MC-12- H₂O₂. Compared with the pristine catalyst, three oxygen-functionalized catalysts showed enhanced activity and H₂O₂ selectivity in 2e^- ORR. Among them, MC-12-H₂O₂ exhibited the highest catalytic activity and selectivity of 94 %, as well as a considerable HO₂^- accumulation of 46.2 mmol L^-1 and excellent stability in an extended test over 36 h in a H-cell. Electrochemical characterization demonstrated the promotion of OFGs on ORR kinetics and the greater contribution of carboxyl groups to the intrinsically catalytic activity. DFT calculations confirmed that the electrons are transferred from carboxyl groups to adjacent carbon and the enhanced adsorption strength toward *OOH intermediate, leading to a lower energy barrier for forming *OOH on carboxyl terminated carbon atoms.

Divergent Carbocatalytic Routes in Oxidative Coupling of Benzofused Heteroaryl Dimers: A Mechanistic Update

Mildly thermal air or HNO3 oxidized activated carbons catalyse oxidative dehydrogenative couplings of benzo[b]fused heteroaryl 2,2'-dimers, e.g., 2-(benzofuran-2-yl)-1H-indole, to chiral 3,3'-coupled cyclooctatetraenes or carbazole-type migrative products under O2 atmosphere. DFT calculations show that the radical cation and the Scholl-type arenium cation mechanisms lead to different products with 2-(benzofuran-2-yl)-1H-indole, being in accord with experimental product distributions.

A new method for the synthesis of achiral axial 3,3′-biindole-2,2′-dibenzenesulfonothioate derivatives from indole-2-thiones with arylsulfonyl hydrazides promoted by NaI/TBHP is disclosed.

Synthesis of Tetrahydroindolizino[8,7-b]indole Derivatives in the Presence of Fe(OTf)3 or CF3SO3H through Intramolecular Dearomatization of Indole

We have developed a convenient synthesis of tetrahydroindolizino[8,7-b]indole derivatives via intramolecular dearomatization of indole. Highly functionalized tetrahydroindolizinoindoles can be prepared in the presence of trifluoromethanesulfonic acid in good to excellent yields (up to >99% yield) with novel designed pyrrole-tethered indoles. The same products can also be synthesized through a mild Fe(OTf)₃-catalyzed process in acceptable to good yields (up to 75% yield).

Recent progress in (hetero)arene cation radical-based heteroarene modification

The transformation of (hetero)arene cation radicals has become a powerful tool for the construction of highly functionalized (hetero)arenes. These (hetero)arene cation radicals could be generated under electrochemical, photochemical or chemical oxidation systems. The in situ generated (hetero)arene cation radicals can be attacked by various nucleophiles, such as (hetero)aromatics and anions, yielding structurally diverse molecules. Recently, a large number of impressive heteroarene modifications have been designed by this strategy. This review summarizes the advances in heteroarene modification via reactions of in situ formed (hetero)arene cation radicals, ranging from 2010 to 2020.

The durability of carbon nanotubes in the selective reduction of nitrobenzene

Surface oxidized carbon nanotubes (oCNTs) were quite stable for the selective reduction of nitrobenzene, while notable deactivation was observed for the un-oxidized sample (rCNTs). The adsorption of N-containing compounds had a negligible effect, but the formation of a carboxyl group and anhydride was mainly responsible for the deactivation of rCNTs.

FeCl3 mediated dimerization of dihydropyrrolo[2,1-a]isoquinolines and chlorination of tetrasubstituted pyrroles

We have developed a mild and direct dimerization of dihydropyrrolo[2,1-a]isoquinolines through FeCl₃-mediated oxidative homocoupling. A series of dimeric dihydropyrroloisoquinoline derivatives were obtained in acceptable to excellent yields (up to >99%). Attempts to expand this dimerization system to the synthesis of dimeric pyrroles failed and chlorination products were obtained in most cases instead of dimeric pyrroles.
