A Cornucopia of Iridium Nitrogen Compounds Produced from Laser-Ablated Iridium Atoms and Dinitrogen

10-Valence-Electron C≡O and the 14-VE C≡Pt: Two Triple-Bonded Isoelectronic Families Differing by a dδ4 Ring

10-VE A≡A' Diatomics, such as N≡N, C≡O, etc., have a strong σ2π4 triple bond plus a lone pair at each end. In our studies on 14-VE A≡B systems, such as C≡Pt, we find a similar bonding system plus a (5dδ)4 ring. Here, the A atom belongs to groups 13-17 and the B atom to groups 7-11. Also the BB' combinations, triatomics, such as PtCO or DsCO or uranyl, and longer chains, such as AuCN and [NC-Au-CN]-, are discussed. The δ ring directly contributes to nuclear quadrupole coupling constants, and DFT calculations using the BH and H or mPW1K functionals reproduce the experimental trends of the NQCC.

Recent advances of Cp*Ir complexes for transfer hydrogenation: focus on formic acid/formate as hydrogen donors

Transfer hydrogenation reactions offer synthetically powerful strategies to deliver various hydrogenated compounds with the advantages of efficiency, atom economy, and practicability. On one hand, formic acid/formate function as promising hydrogen sources owing to their readily obtainable, inexpensive, and easy to handle nature. On the other hand, Cp*Ir complexes show high activities in transfer hydrogenation. This review highlights progress achieved for transfer hydrogenation of CO, CC, and CN bonds of a variety of unsaturated substrates, as well as amides focusing on Cp*Ir complexes as catalysts and formic acid/formate as hydrogen sources.

Probing the binding and activation of small molecules by gas-phase transition metal clusters via IR spectroscopy

Isolated transition metal clusters have been established as useful models for extended metal surfaces or deposited metal particles, to improve the understanding of their surface chemistry and of catalytic reactions. For this objective, an important milestone has been the development of experimental methods for the size-specific structural characterization of clusters and cluster complexes in the gas phase. This review focusses on the characterization of molecular ligands, their binding and activation by small transition metal clusters, using cluster-size specific infrared action spectroscopy. A comprehensive overview and a critical discussion of the experimental data available to date is provided, reaching from the initial results obtained using line-tuneable CO₂ lasers to present-day studies applying infrared free electron lasers as well as other intense and broadly tuneable IR laser sources.

Iridium Complex-Catalyzed Transfer Hydrogenation of N-Heteroarenes and Tentative Asymmetric Synthesis

An iridium-catalyzed transfer hydrogenation of N-heteroarenes to access a series of substituted 1,2,3,4-tetrahydroquinoline derivatives in excellent yields is disclosed. This transformation is distinguished with water-soluble and air-stable iridium complexes as the catalyst, formic acid as the hydrogen source, mild reaction conditions, and broad functional group compatibility. Most importantly, a tentative chiral N,N-chelated Cp*Ir(III) complex-catalyzed enantioselective transfer hydrogenation is also presented, affording chiral products in excellent yields and good enantioselectivities.

Fluoro Nitrenoid Complexes FN=MF2 (M=Co, Rh, Ir): Electronic Structure Dichotomy and Formation of Nitrido Fluorides N≡MF3

The fluoronitrenoid metal complexes FNCoF2 and FNRhF2 as well as the first ternary RhVI and IrVI complexes NIrF3 and NRhF3 are described. They were obtained by the reaction of excited Group-9 metal atoms with NF3 and their IR spectra, isolated in solid rare gases (neon and argon), were recorded. Aided by the observed 14/15 N isotope shifts and quantum-chemical predictions, all four stretching fundamentals of the novel complexes were safely assigned. The F-N stretching frequencies of the fluoronitrenoid complexes FNCoF2 (1056.8 cm-1 ) and FNRhF2 (872.6 cm-1 ) are very different and their N-M bonds vary greatly. In FNCoF2 , the FN ligand is singly bonded to Co and bears considerable iminyl/nitrene radical character, while the N-Rh bond in FNRhF2 is a strong double bond with comparatively strong σ- and π-bonds. The anticipated rearrangement of FNCoF2 to the nitrido CoVI complex is predicted to be endothermic and was not observed.

A Cornucopia of Iridium Nitrogen Compounds Produced from Laser-Ablated Iridium Atoms and Dinitrogen

The reaction of laser-ablated iridium atoms with dinitrogen molecules and nitrogen atoms yield several neutral and ionic iridium dinitrogen complexes such as Ir(N₂ ), Ir(N₂ )⁺ , Ir(N₂ )₂ , Ir(N₂ )₂ ^- , IrNNIr, as well as the nitrido complexes IrN, Ir(N)₂ and IrIrN. These reaction products were deposited in solid neon, argon and nitrogen matrices and characterized by their infrared spectra. Assignments of vibrational bands are supported by ab initio and first principle calculations as well as ^14/15 N isotope substitution experiments. The structural and electronic properties of the new dinitrogen and nitrido iridium complexes are discussed. While the formation of the elusive dinitrido complex Ir(N)₂ was observed in a subsequent reaction of IrN with N atoms within the cryogenic solid matrices, the threefold coordinated iridium trinitride Ir(N)₃ could not be observed so far.

PtX as the limit of high oxidation states in oxide–nitride species

Neutral PtO₂N₂ and PtNO₃⁺ and PtN₃O⁻ ions are theoretically predicted to be sufficiently metastable to be prepared by a skillful experimenter in cryogenic conditions. PtNO₃⁺ has a longer lifetime than the previously claimed PtO₄²⁺.
