Abstract
Using first-principles calculations, we investigate the absorption spectra (in the near-infrared, visible, and first UV range) of the two most probable eumelanin tetrameric molecules exhibiting either a linear open-chain or a cyclic porphyrine-like configuration. In order to simulate a realistic molecular system, an implicit solvent model is used in our calculations to mimic the effect of the solvated environment around the eumelanin molecule. Although the presence of solvent is found not to significantly affect the absorption pattern of both molecules, the onset of the spectra are shifted toward higher energies, especially for the linear tetramer. Interestingly, the absorption spectra and optical onsets of the two molecules differ significantly both in a vacuum and in ethanol. However, the two predicted spectra do not allow us to definitely discriminate between the two configurations when comparing the theoretical predictions with the available experimental spectrum. In addition, a mix of the two eumelanin configurations (close to fifty-fifty) leads to a maximum overlap between theoretical and experimental spectra. Consequently, this theoretical research shows that deeper insight can be gained using beyond DFT techniques on the real form of eumelanin protomolecules present in living systems as well as on their possible use in hybrid solar cells.

Blockade of persistent colored isomer formation in photochromic 3H-naphthopyrans by excited-state intramolecular proton transfer. Sci Rep 2022; 12:19159. Abstract
AbstractIn photochemistry the excited-state intramolecular proton transfer process (ESIPT) is often observed as a highly efficient singlet excited state depletion pathway, which in the presence of a strong intramolecular hydrogen bond may proceed on a subpicosecond time scale. The present work describes the suppression of unwanted transoid-trans isomer formation in photochromic 3H-naphthopyran derivatives by the introduction of a 5-hydroxy substituent. According to time-resolved spectroscopy experiments and excited-state ab initio calculations, transoid-cis → transoid-trans photoisomerization is reduced by a competitive ESIPT channel in nonpolar solvent (cyclohexane). Upon specific solute–solvent interactions (methanol, acetonitrile) the intramolecular hydrogen bond in the transoid-cis form is perturbed, favoring the internal conversion S1 → S0 process as photostabilizing channel.

Abstract
UV-Vis absorption spectra and emission peaks of indole and 7-fluoroindole are measured and it is observed that 7-fluoroindole quenches the fluorescence signals significantly compared to indole. This observation is elucidated via reconstruction of the potential energy surfaces, determination of the conical intersections, and dynamical studies. It is observed that a single fluorine substitution on indole leads to the appearance of several accessible low-energy conical intersections that cause fast nonradiative decay. In this paper, we have investigated the nonradiative processes of Ind and 7F-Ind theoretically using high-level methods, such as EOM-EE-CCSD, SA-CASSCF, MS-CASPT2/6-311++G(d,p) levels of theory, to study these pathways and their feasibility.

Abstract
Herein, we have employed the QM(CASPT2//CASSCF)/MM method to explore the photophysical and photochemical mechanism of oxybenzone (OB) in methanol solution. Based on the optimized minima, conical intersections and crossing points, and minimum-energy reaction paths related to excited-state intramolecular proton transfer (ESIPT) and excited-state decay paths in the 1ππ*, 1nπ*, 3ππ*, 3nπ*, and S0 states, we have identified several feasible excited-state relaxation pathways for the initially populated S2(1ππ*) state to decay to the initial enol isomer' S0 state. The major one is the singlet-mediated and stretch-torsion coupled ESIPT pathway, in which the system first undergoes an essentially barrierless 1ππ* ESIPT process to generate the 1ππ* keto species, and finally realizes its ground state recovery through the subsequent carbonyl stretch-torsion facilitating S1 → S0 internal conversion (IC) and the reverse ground-state intramolecular proton transfer (GSIPT) process. The minor ones are related to intersystem crossing (ISC) processes. At the S2(1ππ*) minimum, an S2(1ππ*)/S1(1nπ*)/T2(3nπ*) three-state intersection region helps the S2 system branch into the T1 state through a S2 → S1 → T1 or S2 → T2 → T1 process. Once it has reached the T1 state, the system may relax to the S0 state via direct ISC or via subsequent nearly barrierless 3ππ* ESIPT to yield the T1 keto tautomer and ISC. The resultant S0 keto species significantly undergoes reverse GSIPT and only a small fraction yields the trans-keto form that relaxes back more slowly. However, due to small spin-orbit couplings at T1/S0 crossing points, the ISC to S0 state occurs very slowly. The present work rationalizes not only the ultrafast excited-state decay dynamics of OB but also its phosphorescence emission at low temperature.

Abstract
Eumelanin is a polymeric structure made of dihydroxyindole (DHI) as the basic motif. Since the oxidative polymerization of DHI forms the core of eumelanin, understanding the effect of polymerization on its optical and photoprotective properties is crucial to elucidate the structure-function relationship of eumelanin. In this work, we investigate the effect of dimerization of DHI on the photoprocesses of eumelanin. We observe that there are several low-energy conical intersections and energetically favorable pathways for deactivation of photoexcited dimeric DHI species. While the original deactivation modes of the monomers are still important, in dimers the intermonomer dihedral angles seem to play a central role.

Abstract
The ferulic acid (FA) is a kind of phenolic acid widely exists in nature plants. Apart from its medicinal values, the FA is also widely applied in cosmetic industry. Recently, it was found to have potential applications in commercial sunscreens for its strong photostability and photoprotection property from harmful UV rays. Such excellent property lies in the ultrafast decay process of the FA system when exposure to the UV light, but the underlying detailed relaxation pathway is still less clear-cut. In the current work, high-level ab initio electronic structure calculations and on-the-fly surface hopping dynamics simulations were employed to explore the photoinduced decay mechanism of the FA system both on the S1 and S3 states in the gas phase. The results provide a reasonable explanation for the wavelength dependent decay patterns of FA system. The S1 state decay pathway is driven by a re-emission process to dissipate excess energy. While for the S3 state deactivation process, the pathway is dominated by a non-adiabatic process driven by the internal conversion process through the conical intersection regions. A S3-S1-S0 two step decay pattern is proposed, and the pathways are mainly driven by a puckering distortion motion of the aromatic ring and a twisting motion around the bridging double bond. The calculation results contribute to a better understanding of detailed dynamics behavior of the FA deactivation process, and provide theoretical guidance for further design of efficient and environmentally friendly sunscreens.

Abstract
Methyl 2-cyano-3,3-diphenylacrylate (MCDPA) shares the same molecular skeleton with octocrylene (OCR) that is one of the most common molecules used in commercially available sunscreens. However, its excited-state relaxation mechanism is unclear. Herein, we have used the QM(CASPT2//CASSCF)/MM method to explore spectroscopic properties, geometric and electronic structures, relevant conical intersections and crossing points, and excited-state relaxation paths of MCDPA in methanol solution. We found that in the Franck-Condon (FC) region, the V(1ππ*) state is energetically lower than the V'(1ππ*) state only by 2.8 kcal/mol and is assigned to experimentally observed maximum absorption band. From these two initially populated singlet states, there exist three nonradiative relaxation paths to repopulate the S0 state. In the first one, when the V(1ππ*) state is populated in the FC region, the system diabatically evolves along the V(1ππ*) state into its minimum where the internal conversion to S0 occurs. In the second one, the V'(1ππ*) state is populated in the FC region and the system adiabatically overcomes a barrier of ca. 3.0 kcal/mol to approach the V(1ππ*) minimum eventually leading to a V(1ππ*)-to-S0 internal conversion. In the third one, the V'(1ππ*) state first hops via the intersystem crossing to the T2 state, which then decays through the internal conversion to the T1 state. The T1 state is finally converted to the S0 state via the T1/S0 crossing point. Our present work contributes to understanding the photophysics of OCR and its variants.

Abstract
We report the first excited state dynamics study of gas-phase 5,6-dihydroxyindole (5,6-DHI), a key building block of eumelanin pigments that are found throughout nature and serve as important photo-protective compounds. Time-resolved ion-yield measurements over the 241-296 nm ultraviolet photoexcitation region revealed non-adiabatic processes occurring on up to three distinct timescales. These reflect ultrafast (i.e. sub-picosecond) internal conversion within the excited state singlet manifold, and much longer-lived processes ranging from 10 ps to in excess of 1 ns. Our investigation paves the way for precisely targeted future studies of 5,6-DHI that exploit more differential measurement techniques. The work was facilitated by the use of soft laser-based thermal desorption to introduce 5,6-DHI samples into the gas phase. This approach, based on low-cost, readily available diode lasers, is straightforward, easily controllable and potentially applicable to a wide range of non-volatile molecular species.

Abstract
The photoswitchability of a protonated aromatic compound (2-aminobenzaldehyde, 2ABZH+) in its individual and microhydrated states has been addressed based on the RI-MP2/RI-CC2 theoretical methods. Our calculated results give insight into the ultrafast nonradiative deactivation mechanism of the 2ABZH+, driven by a conical intersection between the S1/ S0 potential energy surfaces. Also, it has been predicted that protonation accompanies a significant blue shift effect on the first 1ππ* excited state of 2ABZ by 0.87 eV (at least 50 nm).

Abstract
Hydroxyphenyl benzothiazole (HBT), is a well-known organic system based on its special characteristic of the excited state hydrogen transfer (ESHT) following photoexcitation. However, the capability of this system regarding photochromism and photoswitching has not been addressed yet. In this study, we have investigated this issue by the aim of the MP2, CC2, ADC(2), and CASSCF theoretical methods. Also, we have considered several electron withdrawing groups and investigated their effects on the photophysical characteristics and spectroscopic properties of the enol and keto tautomers of the titled system. It has been predicted that the main HBT and its considered substitutions fulfill the essential characteristics required for photochromism. Also, substitution is an effective idea for tuning the photophysical nature of HBT and its similar systems. Our theoretical results verify that different substitutions alter the UV absorption of HBT systems from 330 to 351 nm and also the corresponding absorption wavelength of the γ-forms of 526-545 nm.

Abstract
Thiazolo-[4,5- d]-thiazo-frame (tztz) compounds are important heteroaromatic organic systems, which recently became a subject of several studies in the field of organic electronics and organic photovoltaics. The most important physical nature of these systems is reported to be an equilibrium between enol and keto forms following excited-state proton transfer. This process originates from a flat trend of the S1 PE (potential energy) profile along the proton transfer coordinate. In the present work, we determined and interpreted the excited-state proton transfer and photophysical nature of these systems extensively by means of the MP2/CC2 and CASSCF theoretical approaches. Also, the effects of amine (-NH2) and cyano (-CN) substitutions were taken into account comprehensively by considering the transition energies and proton transfer pathways of the resulting tztz derivatives. It has been predicted that the physical nature of the excited-state intramolecular proton transfer, as the main character of these systems, is being affected significantly by substitutions. For all of the considered tztz derivatives, a conical intersection (CI) between ground and the S1 excited state was predicted. This CI makes the considered species capable to be responsible for photochromism and photoswitching as well.

Abstract
Evolution has ensured that plants and animals have developed effective protection mechanisms against the potentially harmful effects of incident ultraviolet radiation (UVR). Tanning is one such mechanism in humans, but tanning only occurs post-exposure to UVR. Hence, there is ever growing use of commercial sunscreens to pre-empt overexposure to UVR. Key requirements for any chemical filter molecule used in such a photoprotective capacity include a large absorption cross-section in the UV-A and UV-B spectral regions and the availability of one or more mechanisms whereby the absorbed photon energy can be dissipated without loss of the molecular integrity of the chemical filter. Here we summarise recent experimental (mostly ultrafast pump-probe spectroscopy studies) and computational progress towards unravelling various excited state decay mechanisms that afford the necessary photostability in chemical filters found in nature and those used in commercial sunscreens. We also outline ways in which a better understanding of the photophysics and photochemistry of sunscreen molecules selected by nature could aid the design of new and improved commercial sunscreen formulations.

Abstract
4-Methylbenzylidene camphor (4MBC) is a frequently used ultraviolet (UV) filter in commercial sunscreens, which is experimentally found to undergo efficient intersystem crossing to triplet manifolds followed by predominant radiationless decay to the ground state. However, its photophysical mechanism is unclear. Herein, we have employed combined CASPT2 and CASSCF methods to study the spectroscopic properties, geometric and electronic structures, conical intersections and crossing points, and excited-state deactivation channels of 4MBC. We have found that the V(1 ππ*) state is populated with large probability in the Franck-Condon region. Starting from this state, there are two efficient nonradiative relaxation processes to populate the 3 ππ* state. In the first one, the V(1 ππ*) state decays to the V'(1 ππ*) state. The resultant V'(1 ππ*) state further jumps to the 1 nπ* state by internal conversion at the 1 ππ*/1 nπ* conical intersection. Then, the 1 nπ* state hops to the 3 ππ* state through an efficient 1 nπ*→3 ππ* intersystem crossing process. In the second one, the V(1 ππ*) state can diabatically relax along the photoisomerization reaction coordinate. In this process, a 1 ππ*/3 nπ* crossing point helps the 1 ππ* system decay to the 3 nπ* state, which further decays to the 3 ππ* state through internal conversion at the 3 nπ*/3 ππ* conical intersection. Once the 3 ππ* state is formed, a nearly barrierless relaxation path drives the 3 ππ* system to hop to the S0 state via the 3 ππ*/S0 crossing point. Our current work not only rationalizes recent experimental observations but also enriches our photophysical knowledge of UV filters.

Abstract
The geometry and electronic structures of protonated serotonin have been investigated by the aim of MP2 and CC2 methods. The relative stabilities, transition energies and geometry of sixteen different protonated isomers of serotonin have been presented. It has been predicted that protonation does not exhibit essential alteration on the S1←S0 electronic transition energy of serotonin. Instead, more complicated photophysical nature in respect to its neutral analogue is suggested for protonated system owing to radiative and non-radiative deactivation pathways. In addition to hydrogen detachment (HD), hydrogen/proton transfer (H/PT) processes from ammonium to indole ring along the NH+⋯π hydrogen bond have been predicted as the most important photophysical consequences of SERH+ at S1 excited state. The PT processes is suggested to be responsible for fluorescence of SERH+ while the HD driving coordinate is proposed for elucidation of its nonradiative deactivation mechanism.

Abstract
The origin of eumelanin optical properties remains a formidable conundrum preventing a detailed understanding of the complex photo-protective role of these widespread natural pigments and the rational design of innovative bioinspired materials for optoelectronic applications. Here we report the unusual kinetic and thickness-dependent evolution of the optical properties of black eumelanin polymers generated by spontaneous aerial polymerization of 5,6-dihydroxyindole (DHI) thin films (0.1-1 μm), consistent with peculiar solid state reorganization mechanisms governing broadband absorption. The complete reversal of eumelanin UV-visible transmittance spectrum curvature on passing from 0.2 to 0.5 μm thick films, the marked increase in visible extinction coefficients with increasing film thickness and the higher UV extinction coefficients in slowly vs. rapidly generated polymers concur to support distinct dynamic regimes of solid-state molecular reorganization at the nanoscale level and to do affect the development of broadband visible absorption. Solid state control of molecular reorganization disclosed herein may delineate new rational strategies for tuning optical properties in eumelanin thin films for optoelectronic applications.

Abstract
Skin photoprotection is commonly believed to rely on the photochemistry of 5,6-dihydroxyindole (DHI)- and 5,6-dihydroxyindole-2-carboxylic acid (DHICA)-based eumelanin building blocks. Attempts to elucidate the underlying excited-state relaxation mechanisms have been partly unsuccessful due to the marked instability to oxidation. We report a study of the excited-state deactivation of DHI using steady-state and time-resolved fluorescence accompanied by high-level quantum-chemistry calculations including solvent effects. Spectroscopic data show that deactivation of the lowest excited state of DHI in aqueous buffer proceeds on the 100 ps time scale and is 20 times faster than in methanol. Quantum-chemical calculations reveal that the excited-state decay mechanism is a sequential proton-coupled electron transfer, which involves the initial formation of a solvated electron from DHI, followed by the transfer of a proton to the solvent. This unexpected finding would prompt a revision of current notions about eumelanin photophysics and photobiology.

Abstract
Sunscreens are one of the most common ways of providing on-demand additional photoprotection to the skin. Ultrafast transient absorption spectroscopy has recently proven to be an invaluable tool in understanding how the components of commercial sunscreen products display efficient photoprotection. Important examples of how this technique has unravelled the photodynamics of common components are given in this Perspective, and some of the remaining unanswered questions are discussed.

Abstract
Eumelanin (EM) and pheomelanin (PM) are ubiquitous in mammalian skin and hair--protecting against harmful radiation from the sun. Their primary roles are to absorb solar radiation and efficiently dissipate the excess excited state energy in the form of heat without detriment to the polymeric structure. EU and PM exist as polymeric chains consisting of exotic arrangements of functionalised heteroaromatic molecules. Here we have used state-of-the-art electronic structure calculations and on-the-fly surface hopping molecular dynamics simulations to study the intrinsic deactivation paths of various building blocks of EU and PM. Ultrafast excited state decay, via electron-driven proton transfer (in EU and PM) and proton-transfer coupled ring-opening (in PM) reactions, have been identified to proceed along hitherto unknown charge-separated states in EU and PM oligomers. These results shed light on the possible relaxation pathways that dominate the photochemistry of natural skin melanins. Extrapolation of such findings could provide a gateway into engineering more effective molecular constituents in commercial sunscreens--with reduced phototoxicity.

Abstract
Eumelanin is a naturally occurring skin pigment which is responsible for developing a suntan. The complex structure of eumelanin consists of π-stacked oligomers of various indole derivatives, such as the monomeric building block 5,6-dihydroxyindole (DHI). In this work, we present an ab initio wave-function study of the absorption behavior of DHI oligomers and of doubly and triply π-stacked species of these oligomers. We have simulated the onset of the electronic absorption spectra by employing the MP2 and the linear-response CC2 methods. Our results demonstrate the effect of an increasing degree of oligomerization of DHI and of an increasing degree of π-stacking of DHI oligomers on the onset of the absorption spectra and on the degree of red-shift toward the visible region of the spectrum. We find that π-stacking of DHI and its oligomers substantially red-shifts the onset of the absorption spectra. Our results also suggest that the optical properties of biological eumelanin cannot be simulated by considering the DHI building blocks alone, but instead the building blocks indole-semiquinone and indole-quinone have to be considered as well. This study contributes to advancing the understanding of the complex photophysics of the eumelanin biopolymer.

Abstract
Excited state hydrogen transfer in hydroquinone- and catechol-ammonia clusters has been extensively investigated by high level ab initio methods. The potential energy profiles of the title systems at different electronic states have been determined at the MP2/CC2 levels of theory. It has been predicted that double hydrogen transfer (DHT) takes place as the main consequence of photoexcited tetra-ammoniated systems. Consequently, the DHT processes lead the excited systems to the (1)πσ*-S0 conical intersections, which is responsible for the ultrafast non-radiative relaxation of UV-excited clusters to their ground states. Moreover, according to our calculated results, the single hydrogen detachment or hydrogen transfer process essentially governs the relaxation dynamics of smaller sized clustered systems (mono- and di-ammoniated).

Abstract
Effect of chemical substitutions to the molecular structure of 3-hydroxy-picolinic acid on photo-switching properties of the system operating on excited-state intramolecular double proton transfer (d-ESIPT) process [M. F. Rode and A. L. Sobolewski, Chem. Phys. 409, 41 (2012)] was studied with the aid of electronic structure theory methods. It was shown that simultaneous application of electron-donating and electron-withdrawing substitutions at certain positions of the molecular frame increases the height of the S0-state tautomerization barrier (ensuring thermal stability of isomers) and facilitates a barrierless access to the S1/S0 conical intersection from the Franck-Condon region of the S1 potential-energy surface. Results of study point to the conclusion that the most challenging issue for practical design of a fast molecular photoswitch based on d-ESIPT phenomenon are to ensure a selectivity of optical excitation of a given tautomeric form of the system.

Abstract
The potential energy profiles of neutral and protonated anisole and p-fluoroanisole at different electronic states have been investigated extensively by the RI-MP2 and RI-CC2 methods. The calculations reveal that the relaxation dynamics in protonated anisole and p-fluoroanisole are essentially different from those of the neutral analogues. In neutral anisole/p-fluoroanisole, the (1)πσ* state plays a vital relaxation role along the O-CH3 coordinate, yielding the CH3 radical. For both of these molecules, the calculations indicate conical intersections (CIs) between the ground and excited state potential energy (PE) curves, hindered by a small barrier, and providing non-adiabatic gates for radiation-less deactivation to the ground state. Nevertheless, for the protonated cases, besides the prefulvenic deformation of the benzene ring, it has been predicted that the lowest (1)(σ,n)π* state along the C-O-C bond angle plays an important role in photochemistry and the relaxation dynamics. The S1, S0 PE profiles of protonated anisole along with the former reaction coordinate (out-of-plane deformation) show a barrierless relaxation pathway, which can be responsible for the ultrafast deactivation of excited systems to the ground state via the low-lying S1/S0 conical intersection. Moreover, the later reaction coordinate in protonated species (C-O-C angle from 120°-180°) is consequently accompanied with the bond cleavage of C-OCH3 at the (1)(σ,n)π* state, hindered by a barrier of ∼0.51 eV, and can be responsible for the relaxation of excited systems with significant excess energy (hν≥ 5 eV). Furthermore, according to the RI-CC2 calculated results, different effects on the S1-S0 electronic transition energy of anisole and p-fluoroanisole upon protonation have been predicted. The first electronic transitions of anisole and p-fluoroanisole shift by ∼0.3 and 1.3 eV to the red respectively due to protonation.

Abstract
The CC2 (second order approximate coupled cluster method) has been applied to investigate protonation effect on electronic transition energies of 2-pyridone (2PY), 2-pyridone dimer, and micro-solvated 2-pyridone (0-2 water molecules). The PE profiles of protonated 2-pyridone (2PYH(+)) as well as monohydrated 2PYH(+) at the different electronic states have been investigated. The (1)πσ∗ state in protonated species (2PYH(+)) is a barrier free and dissociative state along the O-H stretching coordinate. In this reaction coordinate, the lowest lying (1)πσ∗ predissociates the bound S1((1)ππ∗) state, connecting the latter to a conical intersection with the S0 state. These conical intersections lead the (1)ππ∗ state to proceed as predissociative state and finally direct the excited system to the ground state. Furthermore, in presence of water molecule, the (1)πσ∗ state still remains dissociative but the conical intersection between (1)πσ∗ and ground state disappears. In addition, according to the CC2 calculation results, it has been predicted that protonation significantly blue shifts the S1-S0 electronic transition of monomer, dimer, and microhydrated 2-pyridone.

Abstract
Time-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy was used to obtain new information about the dynamics of electronic relaxation in gas-phase indole and 5-hydroxyindole following UV excitation with femtosecond laser pulses centred at 249 nm and 273 nm. Our analysis of the data was supported by ab initio calculations at the coupled cluster and complete-active-space self-consistent-field levels. The optically bright (1)L(a) and (1)L(b) electronic states of (1)ππ∗ character and spectroscopically dark and dissociative (1)πσ∗ states were all found to play a role in the overall relaxation process. In both molecules we conclude that the initially excited (1)L(a) state decays non-adiabatically on a sub 100 fs timescale via two competing pathways, populating either the subsequently long-lived (1)L(b) state or the (1)πσ∗ state localised along the N-H coordinate, which exhibits a lifetime on the order of 1 ps. In the case of 5-hydroxyindole, we conclude that the (1)πσ∗ state localised along the O-H coordinate plays little or no role in the relaxation dynamics at the two excitation wavelengths studied.
