Abstract
Porphyrins and phthalocyanines are promising candidates for single-molecule electronics. Among the many characterization tools, scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) represents a very powerful one to gain insight into the electronic properties at the molecular level, by correlating the charge transport behaviours of π-conjugated molecules with ultrahigh resolution imaging. In view of the sophistication of molecular self-assembly in the presence of a solution phase, in this frontier, we focus on STM studies on porphyrins and phthalocyanines at the liquid/solid interface, placing emphasis on the electronic and magnetic properties, as well as the switching behaviour of surface-confined or surface-anchored molecules. Furthermore, we have also addressed the topics of potential that can be exploited in this area.

Abstract
Two Si-based hybrid self-assembled monolayers of porphyrin based on a D-s-A system were synthesized by electro-grafting. The monolayers showed a stable and reversible rectification at room temperature. The monolayer fabricated using a porphyrin with an eleven-carbon alkyl chain linker was comparatively more compact and exhibited a 105 times higher rectification ratio (RR) relative to another similar system that had a six-carbon alkyl chain linker, possibly because of the compact packing.

Abstract
Hybrid bilayers consisting of 8-hydroxypyrene-1,3,6-trisulfonic acid trisodium salt (HPTS) and meso-tetra(4-pyridyl)porphine (TPyP) have been successfully constructed on Au(111) and investigated by electrochemical scanning tunneling microscopy (ECSTM). Under the guidance of the electrostatic interaction between negatively charged sulfonate groups and positively charged pyridyl groups, the underlying HPTS arrays act as templates for the deposition of cationic TPyPs, forming two types of TPyP/HPTS complex bilayers. The present work provides a feasible way to fabricate hybrid multilayers on the electrode surface via electrostatic interaction, which has great significance for the design of molecular nanodevices.

Abstract
We design a new type of molecular diode, based on the organoimido derivatives of hexamolybdates, by exploring the rectifying performances using density functional theory combined with the non-equilibrium Green's function. Asymmetric current-voltage characteristics were obtained for the models with an unexpected large rectification ratio. The rectifying behavior can be understood by the asymmetrical shift of the transmission peak observed under different polarities. It is interesting to find that the preferred electron-transport direction in our studied system is different from that of the organic D-bridge-A system. The results show that the studied organic-inorganic hybrid systems have an intrinsically robust rectifying ratio, which should be taken into consideration in the design of the molecular diodes.

Abstract
A [70]fullerene-benzodifuranone acceptor dyad synthesized by a Ag⁺-mediated coupling reaction was used to construct a thin-film organic solar cell. The fullerene and the benzodifuranone dye in the dyad have close-lying LUMO levels in the range of 3.7-3.9 eV, so that energy transfer from the dye to the fullerene can take place. A p-n heterojunction photovoltaic device consisting of a tetrabenzoporphyrin and a [70]fullerene-benzodifuranone dyad showed a weak but discernible contribution from light absorption of the dyad to the photocurrent under both a positive and a negative effective bias. These results indicate that the benzodifuranone moiety attached to the acceptor contributes to light-harvesting by energy transfer.
