Atom and Bond Fukui Functions and Matrices: A Hirshfeld-I Atoms-in-Molecule Approach

Chemical Structure Characteristics and Model Construction of Coal with Three Kinds of Coalification Degrees

The coal structure is extensively used for studying the properties of coal, and the construction of accurate and reliable coal structure models can promote these researches. In this study, Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction (XRD) were used to analyze the changes in the coal structure as a function of the coalification degree, and a semiquantitative model construction method based on FTIR, XRD, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analyses was proposed. With an increase in the coalification degree, the size of the aromatic cores in the coal increased. During the conversion from lignite to bituminous coal, the content of aliphatic structures increased, while the content of oxygen-containing functional groups (OFGs) significantly decreased. Conversely, during the conversion from bituminous coal to anthracite, the content of aliphatic structures decreased while the content of OFGs slightly increased. The calculated FTIR spectra of the coal structure models were consistent with the experimental FTIR spectra, which confirmed the accuracy of the models. Furthermore, the models successfully explained the microscopic mechanism underlying the differences in the wettability of the coal samples with varying coalification degrees. The construction method and coal structure models in this study will be more widely applied in future research.

Extending Conceptual Density Functional Theory toward First-Order Reduced Density Matrices: An Open Subsystems Viewpoint on the Fukui Matrix

As a matrix extension of the Fukui function, a reactivity descriptor grounded within Conceptual Density Functional Theory, the Fukui matrix extends Frontier Molecular Orbital Theory to correlated regimes with its eigendecomposition in Fukui occupations and Fukui naturals. Despite successful applications, the questions remain as to whether replacing a quantity derived from a purely density-based framework by its matrix extension is theoretically well-founded and what chemical information is contained in the corresponding eigendecomposition. In this study, we show that the matrix extension of the Fukui function is only well-defined if one also generalizes the external potential to become nonlocal, leading to the introduction of Conceptual First-Order Reduced Density Matrix Functional Theory. By interpreting the Anderson impurity model from an interacting open subsystem perspective, we show how Fukui occupations and Fukui naturals reflect the influence of an increasing (static) correlation and which characteristic patterns we should expect within a molecular context. This study represents a step in generalizing Conceptual Density Functional Theory beyond its density-based perspective.

Mineralization of tribromophenol under anoxic/oxic conditions in the presence of copper(II) doped green rust: Importance of sequential reduction-oxidation process

The groundwater environment often undergoes the transition from anoxic to oxic due to natural processes or human activities, but the influence of this transition on the fate of groundwater contaminates are not entirely understood. In this work, the degradation of tribromophenol (TBP) in the presence of environmentally relevant iron (oxyhydr)oxides (green rust, GR) and trace metal ions Cu(II) under anoxic/oxic-alternating conditions was investigated. Under anoxic conditions, GR-Cu(II) reduced TBP to 4-BP completely within 7 h while GR only had an adsorption effect on TBP. Under oxic conditions, GR-Cu(II) could generate •OH via dioxygen activation, which resulted in the oxidative transformation of TBP. Sixty-five percentage of TBP mineralization was achieved via a sequential reduction-oxidation process, which was not achieved through single reduction or oxidation process. The produced Cu(I) in GR-Cu(II) enhanced not only the reductive dehalogenation under anoxic conditions, but also the O₂ activation under oxic conditions. Thus, the fate of TBP in anoxic/oxic-alternating groundwater environment is greatly influenced by the presence of GR-Cu(II). The sequential reduction-oxidation degradation of TBP by GR-Cu(II) is promising for future remediation of TBP-contaminated groundwater.

Mechanistic Investigations of the Synthesis of Lactic Acid from Glycerol Catalyzed by an Iridium–NHC Complex

In the present work, the reaction pathways and the origin of catalytic activity for the production of lactic acid from glycerol catalyzed by an iridium–heterocyclic carbene (Iridium-NHC) complex at 383.15 K were investigated by DFT study at the M06-D3/6-311++G (d, p)//SDD level. Compared to the noncatalytic reaction pathway, the energy barrier sharply decreased from 75.2 kcal mol−1 to 16.8 kcal mol−1 with the introduction of the iridium–NHC complex. The catalytic reaction pathway catalyzed by the iridium–NHC complex with a coordinated hydroxide included two stages: the dehydrogenation of glycerol to 2,3-dihydroxypropanal, and the subsequent isomerization to lactic acid. Two reaction pathways, including dehydrogenation in terminal and that in C2-H, were studied. It was found that the formation of dihydroxyacetone from the H-removal in C2-H was more favorable, which might have been due to the lower energy of LUMO, whereas dihydroxyacetone could be easily transferred to 2,3-dihydroxypropanal. The analyses of electrostatic potential (ESP), hardness, and f- Fukui function also confirmed that the iridium–NHC complex acted as a hydrogen anion receptor and nucleophilic reaction center to highly promote the conversion of glycerol to lactic acid.

Analysis of molecular and (di)atomic dual-descriptor functions and matrices

In this work, the dual-descriptor is studied in matrix form [Formula: see text] and both coordinates condensed to atoms, resulting in atomic and diatomic (or where applicable, bond) condensed single values. This double partitioning method of the dual-descriptor matrix is proposed within the Hirshfeld-I atoms-in-molecule framework although it is easily extended to other atoms-in-molecules methods. Diagonalizing the resulting atomic and bond dual-descriptor matrices gives eigenvalues and eigenvectors describing the reactivity of atoms and bonds. The dual-descriptor function is the diagonal element of the underlying matrix. The extra information contained in the atom and bond resolution is highlighted and the effect of choosing either the fragment of molecular response or response of molecular fragment approach is quantified.
