Substrate–Solvent Crosstalk—Effects on Reaction Kinetics and Product Selectivity in Olefin Oxidation Catalysis

In this work, we explored how solvents can affect olefin oxidation reactions catalyzed by MCM-bpy-Mo catalysts and whether their control can be made with those players. The results of this study demonstrated that polar and apolar aprotic solvents modulated the reactions in different ways. Experimental data showed that acetonitrile (aprotic polar) could largely hinder the reaction rate, whereas toluene (aprotic apolar) did not. In both cases, product selectivity at isoconversion was not affected. Further insights were obtained by means of neutron diffraction experiments, which confirmed the kinetic data and allowed for the proposal of a model based on substrate–solvent crosstalk by means of hydrogen bonding. In addition, the model was also validated in the ring-opening reaction (overoxidation) of styrene oxide to benzaldehyde, which progressed when toluene was the solvent (reaching 31% styrene oxide conversion) but was strongly hindered when acetonitrile was used instead (reaching only 7% conversion) due to the establishment of H-bonds in the latter. Although this model was confirmed and validated for olefin oxidation reactions, it can be envisaged that it may also be applied to other catalytic reaction systems where reaction control is critical, thereby widening its use.

Bulk and Confined Benzene-Cyclohexane Mixtures Studied by an Integrated Total Neutron Scattering and NMR Method

Herein mixtures of cyclohexane and benzene have been investigated in both the bulk liquid phase and when confined in MCM-41 mesopores. The bulk mixtures have been studied using total neutron scattering (TNS), and the confined mixtures have been studied by a new flow-utilising, integrated TNS and NMR system (Flow NeuNMR), all systems have been analysed using empirical potential structure refinement (EPSR). The Flow NeuNMR setup provided precise time-resolved chemical sample composition through NMR, overcoming the difficulties of ensuring compositional consistency for computational simulation of data ordinarily found in TNS experiments of changing chemical composition—such as chemical reactions. Unique to the liquid mixtures, perpendicularly oriented benzene molecules have been found at short distances from the cyclohexane rings in the regions perpendicular to the carbon–carbon bonds. Upon confinement of the hydrocarbon mixtures, a stronger parallel orientational preference of unlike molecular dimers, at short distances, has been found. At longer first coordination shell distances, the like benzene molecular spatial organisation within the mixture has also found to be altered upon confinement.

Impact of Molecular Structure on Properties of n-Hexadecane and Alkylbenzene Binary Mixtures

Because of the complexity of petroleum-based fuels, researchers typically use simplified mixtures, known as surrogates, to study combustion behavior and to attempt to identify how physical properties are related to combustion. The process of determining the surrogate composition to yield a desired set of thermophysical properties can be a complicated and time-consuming task. As a result, the use of computer simulations to narrow the number of possible surrogate compositions is beginning to be explored. Herein, molecular dynamics (MD) simulations are used to model binary mixtures of n-hexadecane with either benzene, toluene, n-ethylbenzene, n-propylbenzene, or n-butylbenzene. Calculated densities are in quantitative agreement with experimental values. With the exception of the mixtures containing benzene, simulated excess molar volumes are also in very good agreement with measured values. Isentropic bulk moduli are in qualitative agreement with experiment, and reproduce interesting trends observed in the experimental data. Specifically, minima in the bulk moduli at intermediate compositions of several of the alkylbenzenes are correctly reproduced. In addition, the structures of the fluids are also examined. For mixtures of n-hexadecane with alkylbenzenes with longer chains, the orientation of the aromatic rings is not substantially impacted by composition. In contrast, increasing n-hexadecane content increases the ratio of parallel to perpendicular arrangements of benzene and toluene molecules. In those mixtures, this change in orientation of the aromatic rings could be responsible for the minima observed in the bulk moduli data. These results show that MD simulations can assist in development of fuel surrogates, both by predicting thermophysical properties and by providing insight into how molecular structure and composition affect those properties.

Organic solvents such as phenylacetylene, styrene and ethylbenzene are widely used in industrial processes, especially in the production of rubber or thermoplastics. Despite their important applications detailed knowledge about their structure is limited. In this paper the structures of these three aromatic solvents were investigated using neutron diffraction. The results show that many of their structural characteristics are similar, although the structure of phenylacetylene is more ordered and has a smaller solvation sphere than either ethylbenzene or styrene. Two regions within the first coordination sphere, in which the surrounding molecules show different preferable orientations with respect to the central molecule, were found for each liquid. Additionally, the localisation of the aliphatic chains reveals that they tend to favour closer interactions with each other than to the aromatic rings of the adjacent molecules.
