Abstract
Difluoromethylated compounds usually act as bioisosteres for alcohol functional groups and show unique physicochemical and biological properties. The cyano-difluoromethylation of alkenes using 5-((difluoromethyl)sulfonyl)-1-phenyl-1H-tetrazole as a CF2H radical difluoromethyl precursor was developed to afford nitriles including a CF2H group. A low-cost, stable, easily handled 5-((difluoromethyl)sulfonyl)-1-methyl-1H-tetrazole (DFSMT) was synthesized and applied as the radical CF2H reagent. Using DFSMT as the radical CF2H precursor, the oxyl-difluoromethylation of alkenes was developed to obtain difluoromethylated ether products. All of the reactions showed good functional group tolerability. Initial mechanistic experiments indicated that the CF2H radical was involved as the key active intermediate.

Abstract
An emerging class of C-C coupling transformations that furnish drug-like building blocks involves catalytic hydrocarbonation of alkenes. However, despite notable advances in the field, hydrocarbon addition to gem-difluoroalkenes without additional electronic activation remains largely unsuccessful. This owes partly to poor reactivity and the propensity of difluoroalkenes to undergo defluorinative side reactions. Here, we report a nickel catalytic system that promotes efficient 1,2-selective hydroarylation and hydroalkenylation, suppressing defluorination and providing straightforward access to a diverse assortment of prized organofluorides bearing difluoromethyl-substituted carbon centers. In contrast to radical-based pathways and reactions triggered by hydrometallation via a nickel-hydride complex, our experimental and computational studies support a mechanism in which a catalytically active nickel-bromide species promotes selective carbonickelation with difluoroalkenes followed by alkoxide exchange and hydride transfer, effectively overcoming the difluoroalkene's intrinsic electronic bias.

Abstract
It is significant to develop novel difluoromethylation methods because of the important roles of difluoromethyl groups in the medicinal chemistry and material industries. Here, we developed a novel difluoromethylation-carboxylation and difluoromethylation-deuteration method triggered by a difluoromethyl radical generated by electroreduction of stable and easily available difluoromethyltriphenylphosphonium bromide. Various molecules containing difluoromethyl and carboxyl or deuterium groups can be synthesized through this method. The establishment of this method will provide an alternative to radical difluoromethylation reactions.

Abstract
The electrochemical difluoromethylation of electron-rich olefins (enamides and styrene derivatives) is disclosed. The addition of the electrogenerated difluoromethyl radical from the corresponding sodium sulfinate (i.e., HCF2SO2Na) to enamides and styrenes in an undivided cell allowed the formation of a large panel of difluoromethylated building blocks in good to excellent yields (42 examples, 23-87% yields). A plausible unified mechanism was suggested according to control experiments and cyclic voltammetry measurements.

Abstract
Alkenes and their derivatives are featured widely in a variety of natural products, pharmaceuticals, and advanced materials. Significant efforts have been made toward the development of new and practical methods to access this important class of compounds by selectively activating the alkenyl C(sp2)-H bonds in recent years. In this comprehensive review, we describe the state-of-the-art strategies for the direct functionalization of alkenyl sp2 C-H and C-F bonds until June 2022. Moreover, metal-free, photoredox, and electrochemical strategies are also covered. For clarity, this review has been divided into two parts; the first part focuses on currently available alkenyl sp2 C-H functionalization methods using different alkene derivatives as the starting materials, and the second part describes the alkenyl sp2 C-F bond functionalization using easily accessible gem-difluoroalkenes as the starting material. This review includes the scope, limitations, mechanistic studies, stereoselective control (using directing groups as well as metal-migration strategies), and their applications to complex molecule synthesis where appropriate. Overall, this comprehensive review aims to document the considerable advancements, current status, and emerging work by critically summarizing the contributions of researchers working in this fascinating area and is expected to stimulate novel, innovative, and broadly applicable strategies for alkenyl sp2 C-H and C-F bond functionalizations in the coming years.

Abstract

Abstract
Herein we report a method for the synthesis of α-aryl acrylamides leveraging polar S-to-C aryl migrations induced by a Lewis basic organocatalyst. In contrast to previously reported radical aryl migrations of sulfonyl acrylimides, this polar process enables subsequent elimination, ultimately leading to a formal aryl/hydrogen exchange including SO2 extrusion. This reaction is selective for electron-deficient aromatic groups, while tolerating a variety of substituents on nitrogen and in the β-position, and it delivers useful building blocks for further transformations, including cycloaddition and cyclisation reactions. The mechanism was investigated in detail using quantum chemical calculations, which unexpectedly revealed the Lewis base to be involved in several decisive steps.

Abstract
Due to its superior ability in controlling pharmaceutical activity, the installation of difluoromethyl (CF2H) functionality into organic molecules has been an area of intensive research. In this context, difluoromethylation of C-C π bonds mediated by a CF2H radical have been pursued as a central strategy to grant access to difluoromethylated hydrocarbons. However, early precedents necessitate the generation of oxidative chemical species that can limit the generality and utility of the reaction. We report here the successful implementation of radical hydrodifluoromethylation of unsaturated C-C bonds via an electroreductively triggered two-pronged approach. Preliminary mechanistic investigations suggest that the key distinction of the present strategy originates from the reconciliation of multiple redox processes under highly reducing electrochemical conditions. The reaction conditions can be chosen based on the electronic properties of the alkenes of interest, highlighting the hydrodifluoromethylation of both unactivated and activated alkenes. Notably, the reaction delivers geminal (bis)difluoromethylated products from alkynes in a single step by consecutive hydrodifluoromethylation, granting access to an underutilized 1,1,3,3-tetrafluoropropan-2-yl functional group. The late-stage hydrodifluoromethylation of densely functionalized pharmaceutical agents is also presented.

Abstract
A photoinduced radical difluoromethylarylation via tandem addition-cyclization of alkynes with easily available [bis(difluoroacetoxy)iodo]benzene is accomplished, providing a straightforward and practical route for the construction of difluoromethylated dibenzazepines. Various sensitive functional groups can be compatible under photoinduced conditions. Mechanism investigation reveals that this transformation is initiated by the addition of alkyne with difluoromethyl radical, generated in situ from [bis(difluoroacetoxy)iodo]benzene.

Abstract
Electrosynthesis has recently attracted more and more attention due to its great potential to replace chemical oxidants or reductants in molecule-electrode electron transfer. Sulfonyl compounds such as sulfonyl hydrazides, sulfinic acids (and their salts), sulfonyl halides have been discovered as practical precursors of several radicals. As electrochemical redox reactions can provide green and efficient pathways for the activation of sulfonyl compounds, studies for electrosynthesis have rapidly increased. Several types of radicals can be generated from anodic oxidation or cathodic reduction of sulfonyl compounds and can initiate fluoroalkylation, benzenesulfonylation, cyclization or rearrangement. In this Review, we summarize the electrosynthesis developments involving sulfonyl compounds mainly in the last decade.

Abstract
Visible-light photoredox catalysis has been regarded as an extremely powerful tool in organic chemistry, bringing the spotlight back to radical processes. The versatility of photocatalyzed reactions has already been demonstrated to be effective in providing alternative routes for cross-coupling as well as multicomponent reactions. The photocatalyst allows the generation of high-energy intermediates through light irradiation rather than using highly reactive reagents or harsh reaction conditions. In a similar vein, organic electrochemistry has experienced a fruitful renaissance as a tool for generating reactive intermediates without the need for any catalyst. Such milder approaches pose the basis toward higher selectivity and broader applicability. In photocatalyzed and electrochemical multicomponent reactions, the generation of the radical species acts as a starter of the cascade of events. This allows for diverse reactivity and the use of reagents is usually not covered by classical methods. Owing to the availability of cheaper and more standardized photo- and electrochemical reactors, as well as easily scalable flow-setups, it is not surprising that these two fields have become areas of increased research interest. Keeping these in view, this review is aimed at providing an overview of the synthetic approaches in the design of MCRs involving photoredox catalysis and/or electrochemical activation as a crucial step with particular focus on the choice of the difunctionalized reagent.

Abstract
We describe here a Ni-catalyzed intermolecular carbo-fluoromethylation of alkynes with aliphatic halides and fluoromethyl halides (BrCF 2 H and ICH 2 F) in the presence of zinc, enabling the facile and selective access to a diverse range of biologically valuable CF 2 H/CH 2 F-incorporated alkenes with excellent regio- and stereo-selectivity. Notably, merging intramolecular radical cyclization with fluoromethyl coupling enables the expedient constructions of CF 2 H/CH 2 F-incorporated lactones and lactams with high efficiency and selectivity. Mechanistic studies disclose that this catalytic protocol proceeds via a radical addition to an alkyne followed by selective coupling with the fluoromethyl unit.

Abstract
An electrochemical method for the oxidative Z-selective C(sp2)-H chlorination of acrylamides has been developed. This catalyst and organic oxidant free method is applicable across various substituted tertiary acrylamides, and provides access to a broad range of synthetically useful Z-β-chloroacrylamides in good yields (22 examples, 73% average yield). The orthogonal derivatization of the products was demonstrated through chemoselective transformations and the electrochemical process was performed on gram scale in flow.

Abstract
Radical fluoroalkylation of alkenes has been developed by electrochemical reduction of fluoroalkyl sulfones. A series of electron-deficient alkenes readily undergo hydrofluoroalkylation in good to excellent yields. This chemistry represents the first example of electrochemical generation of fluoroalkyl radicals from sulfones, which are used for practical radical fluoroalkylation of organic compounds.

Abstract
Herein, we describe a protocol for electrochemical cathode reduction to generate trifluoromethyl radicals. The trifluoromethylation reagent (IMDN-SO2CF3) used in this strategy is inexpensive and easy to obtain, and the reaction can be conducted efficiently without the addition of additional redox reagents. Using this strategy, we achieved electrochemical trifluoromethylation/cyclization for the synthesis of isoquinoline-1,3-diones and oxindoles. This protocol has good functional group tolerance and a broad substrate scope.

Abstract
Electrosynthesis can be considered a powerful and sustainable methodology for the synthesis of small organic molecules. Due to its intrinsic ability to generate highly reactive species under mild conditions by anodic oxidation or cathodic reduction, electrosynthesis is particularly interesting for otherwise challenging transformations. One such challenge is the installation of fluorinated alkyl groups, which has gained significant attention in medicinal chemistry and material science due to their unique physicochemical features. Unsurprisingly, several electrochemical fluoroalkylation methods have been established. In this review, we survey recent developments and established methods in the field of electrochemical mono-, di-, and trifluoromethylation, and perfluoroalkylation of small organic molecules.

Abstract
Organic radicals are versatile synthetic intermediates that provide reactivities and selectivities complementary to ionic species. Despite its long history, electrochemically driven radical reactions remain limited in scope. In the past few years, there have been dramatic increase in research activity in organic electrochemistry. We have been developing electrochemical and electrophotocatalytic methods for the generation and synthetic utilization of organic radicals. In our studies, various radical species such as alkene and arene radical cations and carbon- and heteroatom-centered radicals are generated from readily available precursors through direct electrolysis, molecular electrocatalysis or molecular electrophotocatalysis. These radical species undergo various inter- and intramolecular oxidative transformations to rapidly increase molecular complexity. The simultaneous occurrence of anodic oxidation and cathodic proton reduction allows the oxidative reactions to proceed through H2 evolution without external chemical oxidants.

Abstract
A transition-metal- and oxidant-free electrochemical strategy for radical fluoroalkylation of vinyl azides was developed. The reaction was carried out under mild conditions by using inexpensive and bench-stable RfSO2Na (Rf = CF3, CF2H) as fluorination reagents. Depending on the starting material, both the electrochemical radical cyclization and dearomatization products could be obtained. This method provides a green and safe approach to synthesize fluorinated nitrogen heterocycles.

Abstract
The catalyst-free electrochemical di- and trifluoromethylation/cyclization of N-substituted acrylamides was realized under external oxidant-free conditions. The strategy provides expedient access to fluoroalkylated oxindoles and 3,4-dihydroquinolin-2(1 H)-ones with ample scope and broad functional group tolerance by mild, direct electrolysis of sodium sulfinates in an undivided cell. Detailed mechanistic studies provided strong support for a SET-based reaction manifold.
