Tracing Sweetgum Lignin's Molecular Properties through Biorefinery Processing

Effective toluene removal from aqueous solutions using fast pyrolysis-derived activated carbon from agricultural and forest residues: Isotherms and kinetics study

In this study, the production and characterization of activated carbons (ACs) from agricultural and forest residue using physical activation are discussed. Biomass-based biochars produced during fast pyrolysis process is introduced as alternative precursors to produce AC and the integrated process for the co-production of porous adsorbent materials from biochar via the fast pyrolysis process is suggested. Moderate surface areas and good adsorption capacities were obtained from switchgrass (SWG) and pine tops (PT) based AC. The surface areas were 959 and 714 m²/g for SWG- and PT-based AC, respectively. The adsorption capacities using toluene as pollutant for two model systems of 180 and 300 ppm were measured and ranged between 441-711 and 432-716 mg/g for SWG-based and PT-based AC, respectively. The nitrogen adsorptive behavior, Lagergren pseudo-second-order kinetic (PSOK) model and kinetics isotherms studies describe a heterogeneous porous system, including a mesoporous fraction with the existence of a multilayer adsorption performance. The presence of micropores and mesopores in SWG- and PT-based AC suggests potential commercial applications for using pyrolytic biochars for AC production.

Revealing the influence of metallic chlorides pretreatment on chemical structures of lignin and enzymatic hydrolysis of waste wheat straw

The addition of various metallic chlorides in pretreatment of lignocellulose have been widely reported to improve cellulose conversion via cellulolytic processing. However, the interaction mechanism between lignin and metallic cations is not well known. In this work, pretreatment with different concentrations of FeCl₃ and AlCl₃ were performed upon waste wheat straw to enhance enzymatic hydrolysis efficiency. Results showed that pretreatment with FeCl₃ and AlCl₃ could facilitate the enzymatic hydrolysis efficiency increasing from 50.4% to 82.9% and 76.6%, which was attributed to the enhancement of xylan removal by 33.8% (FeCl₃) and 36.5% (AlCl₃), respectively. Meanwhile, the surface charge, hydrophobicity, and protein adsorption capacity of lignin from waste wheat straw can be decreased by 3.3 mV, 0.6 L/g, 7.6 mg/g (FeCl₃). This was due to the depolymerization of lignin in metallic chlorides pretreatment. These findings will be used to further evaluate the effect of metallic chlorides in biorefinery pretreatment.

Removal of fermentation inhibitors from pre-hydrolysis liquor using polystyrene divinylbenzene resin

BACKGROUND

The presence of soluble lignin, furfural and hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) in industrial pre-hydrolysis liquor (PHL) from the pulping process can inhibit its bioconversion into bioethanol and other biochemicals. Although various technologies have been developed to remove these inhibitors, certain amounts of sugars are also inevitably removed during the treatment process. Hence, polystyrene divinylbenzene (PS-DVB) resin was used as an adsorptive material to simultaneously remove fermentation inhibitors while retaining sugars with high yields to improve the fermentability of PHL after acid hydrolysis by enriching its xylose concentration. The fermentability of acid-hydrolyzed PHL (A-PHL) was evaluated by the bioconversion into ethanol and xylosic acid (XA) after treatment with PS-DVB resin.

RESULTS

The results showed that the highest xylose concentration (101.1 g/L) in PHL could be obtained by acid hydrolysis at 100 °C for 80 min with 4% acid, while the concentration of fermentation inhibitors (furfural, HMF and lignin) in PHL could also be significantly improved during the acid-hydrolysis process. After treatment with PS-DVB resin, not only were 97% of lignin, 92% of furfural, and 97% of HMF removed from A-PHL, but also 96% of xylose was retained for subsequent fermentation. With resin treatment, the fermentability of A-PHL could be improved by 162-282% for ethanol production from A-PHL containing 30-50 g/L xylose and by 18-828% for XA production from A-PHL containing 90-150 g/L xylose.

CONCLUSIONS

These results confirmed that PS-DVB resin can remove inhibitors from PHL before producing value-added products by bioconversion. In addition, this work will ideally provide a concept for producing value-added chemicals from pre-hydrolysis liquor, which is regarded as the waste stream in the pulping process.
