Reconstructed Bismuth-Based Metal-Organic Framework Nanofibers for Selective CO2 -to-Formate Conversion: Morphology Engineering

Construction of BiOCl/bismuth-based halide perovskite heterojunctions derived from the metal-organic framework CAU-17 for effective photocatalytic degradation

The designed synthesis of an S-scheme heterojunction has possessed a great potential for improving photocatalytic wastewater treatment by demonstrating increased the photoredox capacity and improved the charge separation efficiency. Here, we introduce the fabrication of a heterojunction-based photocatalyst comprising bismuth oxychloride (BiOCl) and bismuth-based halide perovskite (BHP) nanosheets, derived from metal-organic frameworks (MOFs). Our composite photocatalyst is synthesized through a one-pot solvothermal strategy, where a halogenation process is applied to a bismuth-based metal-organic framework (CAU-17) as the precursor for bismuth sourcing. As a result, the rod-like structure of CAU-17 transforms into well-defined plate and nanosheet architectures after 4 and 8 h of solvothermal treatment, respectively. The modulation of the solvothermal reaction time facilitates the establishment of an S-scheme heterojunction, resulting in an increase in the photocatalytic degradation efficiency of rhodamine B (RhB) and sulfamethoxazole (SMX). The optimized BiOCl/BHP composite exhibits superior RhB and SMX degradation rates, achieving 99.8% degradation of RhB in 60 min and 75.1% degradation of SMX in 300 min. Also, the optimized BiOCl/BHP composite (CAU-17-st-8h sample) exhibited the highest rate constant (k = 3.48 × 10-3 min-1), nearly 6 times higher than that of the bare BHP in the photocatalytic degradation process of SMX. The enhanced photocatalytic efficiency can be endorsed to various factors: (i) the in-situ formation of two-components BiOCl/BHP photocatalyst, derived from CAU-17, effectively suppresses the aggregation of pristine BHP and BiOCl particles; (ii) the S-scheme heterostructure establishes a closely-knit interfacial connection, thereby facilitating efficient pathways for charge separation/transfer; and (iii) the BiOCl/BHP heterostructure enhances its capacity to absorb visible light. Our investigation establishes an effective strategy for constructing heterostructured photocatalysts, offering significant potential for application in photocatalytic wastewater treatment.

Tuning Carbon Dioxide Reduction Reaction Selectivity of Bi Single-Atom Electrocatalysts with Controlled Coordination Environments

Control over product selectivity of the electrocatalytic CO2 reduction reaction (CO2RR) is a crucial challenge for the sustainable production of carbon-based chemical feedstocks. In this regard, single-atom catalysts (SACs) are promising materials due to their tunable coordination environments, which could enable tailored catalytic activities and selectivities, as well as new insights into structure-activity relationships. However, direct evidence for selectivity control via systematic tuning of the SAC coordination environment is scarce. In this work, we have synthesized two differently coordinated Bi SACs anchored to the same host material (carbon black) and characterized their CO2RR activities and selectivities. We find that oxophilic, oxygen-coordinated Bi atoms produce HCOOH, while nitrogen-coordinated Bi atoms generate CO. Importantly, use of the same support material assured that alternation of the coordination environment is the dominant factor for controlling the CO2RR product selectivity. Overall, this work demonstrates the structure-activity relationship of Bi SACs, which can be utilized to establish control over CO2RR product distributions, and highlights the promise for engineering atomic coordination environments of SACs to tune reaction pathways.

Integration of a Bismuth-Based Tris-Mononuclear Complex with 2D Functional Materials for Highly Efficient and Durable Aqueous Electrocatalytic Hydrogen Evolution

The eminence of transitioning from traditional fossil fuel-based energy resources to renewable and sustainable energy sources is most evidently crucial. The potential of hydrogen as an alternative energy source has specifically focuses the electrocatalytic water splitting (EWS) as a promising technique for generating hydrogen. Development of efficient electrocatalysts to facilitate the EWS process while rationalizing the limitations of noble metal catalysts like platinum has become one of the daunting tasks. Consequently, porous functional materials such as metal complexes (MCs) and graphene oxide (GO) can act as potential catalysts for EWS. Therefore, a composite of GO and a mononuclear bismuth metal complex is synthesized through in situ facile synthesis, which is further utilized as an efficient electrocatalyst for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). Several potential electrocatalytic MC@GO composite (BMGO-3,5,7) materials were prepared with compositional variation of GO (3, 5, and 7 wt %). The experimental results demonstrate that the BMGO5 composite exhibits excellent HER activity with a low overpotential value of 105 mV at 10 mA cm-2 and a low Tafel slope of 44 mV dec-1 in 1 M KOH solution. Furthermore, a comprehensive investigation on the potentiality of the BMC-GO composite for hydrogen evolution from river water splitting was performed in order to address the issue of freshwater depletion. Inclusion of a mononuclear MC for facile synthesis of functional GO-based efficient electrocatalyst material is very scanty in the literature. This unique approach could assist future research endeavors toward designing efficient electrocatalysts for sustainable renewable energy generation. This is one of the first of its kind, where mononuclear MCs were utilized to develop GO-based functional composite materials for efficient electrocatalysis toward sustainable renewable energy generation.

In situ growth of Bi-MOF on cotton fabrics via ultrasonic synthesis strategy for recyclable photocatalytic textiles

Bismuth-based metal-organic framework (Bi-MOF) materials have shown potential for treating organic pollutants. In this work, multifunctional textiles were produced by in situ synthesis of CAU-17 on carboxymethylated cotton fabrics by solvothermal and ultrasonic strategies and employed as recyclable photocatalysts. The compositional and structural features of the dense MOF crystal coatings on cotton fibers were confirmed by scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, and other characterization approaches. Under optimized conditions, the developed functionalized cotton fabrics achieved a photodegradation efficiency of 98.8% under visible light for RhB in water, as well as good recyclability. The described results have provided the basis and reference for the fabrication of MOF-functionalized textiles.

Surfactant-Mediated Crystalline Structure Evolution Enabling the Ultrafast Green Synthesis of Bismuth-MOF in Aqueous Condition

Green synthesis of stable metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) with permanent and highly ordered porosity at room temperature without needing toxic and harmful solvents and long-term high-temperature reactions is crucial for sustainable production. Herein, a rapid and environmentally friendly synthesis strategy is reported to synthesize the complex topological bismuth-based-MOFs (Bi-MOFs), [Bi9(C9H3O6)9(H2O)9] (denoted CAU-17), in water under ambient conditions by surfactant-mediated sonochemical approach, which could also be applicable to other MOFs. This strategy explores using cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) amphiphilic molecules as structure-inducing agents to control the removal of non-coordinated water (dehydration) and enhance the degree of deprotonation of the ligands, thereby regulating the coordination and crystallization in aqueous solutions. In addition, another two new strategies for synthesizing CAU-17 by crystal reconstruction and one-step synthesis in binary solvents are provided, and the solvent-induced synthesis mechanism of CAU-17 is studied. The as-prepared CAU-17 presents a competitive iodine capture capability and effective delivery of the antiarrhythmic drug procainamide (PA) for enteropatia due to the broad pH tolerance and the unique phosphate-responsive destruction in the intestine. The findings will provide valuable ideas for the follow-up study of surfactant-assisted aqueous synthesis of MOFs and their potential applications.

Study of bismuth metal organic skeleton composites with photocatalytic antibacterial activity

A composite based on Ag and carbon quantum dot (CQDs) doped bismuth metal organic framework (CAU-17) was synthesized by a one-step thermal solvent in situ growth. The microstructure, chemical composition, morphology, photogenerated electron-hole pairs, and photocatalytic activity of the composite were characterized. The produced composite with its unique energy band structure, enhances the visible light absorption and effectively delays the recombination of the photogenerated carriers. On the other hand, the modification with CQDs increases the concentration and transport rate of photogenerated carriers mainly attributed to their superior electron transport capacity and light trapping ability. The photocatalytic antibacterial effect of CAU-17/Ag/CQDs against common Gram-positive, Gram-negative bacteria (Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli) and drug-resistant bacteria (methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus), as well as its inhibition against HepG2 tumor cell were investigated. The results showed that CAU-17/Ag/CQDs exhibited a photocatalytic antibacterial effect with an inactivation rate as high as 99.9 %. At the low dose (0.2 mg/mL), CAU-17/Ag/CQDs indicated a significant inhibition against bacterial growth 20 min after visible light exposure, whereas at the concentration of 0.5 mg/mL, CAU-17/Ag/CQDs completely killed all the tested bacteria. At the concentration of 0.8 mg/mL, the inhibition rate against HepG2 tumor cells reached 75 %. The excellent photocatalytic property of the as prepared composite contributed to the doping of Ag and CQDs, which fundamentally altered the morphology and energy band distribution. Such a composite can be developed into an effective photocatalytic disinfection system and applied to water purification systems, biofilm rejection, combating different antibiotic resistances, and tumor therapy.

Active-site stabilized Bi metal-organic framework-based catalyst for highly active and selective electroreduction of CO2 to formate over a wide potential window

Bismuth-based materials have been validated to be a kind of effective electrocatalyst for electrocatalytic CO2 reduction (ECR) to formate (HCOO-). However, the established studies still encounter the problems of low current density, low selectivity, narrow potential window, and poor catalyst stability. Herein, a bismuth-terephthalate framework (Bi-BDC MOF) material was successfully synthesized. The optimized Bi-BDC-120 °C exhibited excellent activity, selectivity, and durability for formate production. At an operating potential of -1.1 V vs. RHE in 0.1 mol L-1 KHCO3 electrolyte, the ECR catalyzed by Bi-BDC-120 °C achieved a Faraday efficiency (FE) of 97.2% towards formate generation, and the total current density reached about 30 mA cm-2. The operating potential window with FEformate values > 95% ranged in -0.9 to -1.5 V vs. RHE. The density-functional theory (DFT) calculation demonstrated that the (001) crystalline planes of Bi-BDC are preferable for the adsorption of CO2 and the conversion of *OCHO intermediates, thus ultimately promoting the electrocatalytic production of formate. Although the MOF structure of Bi-BDC-120 °C was insufficiently stabilized, the FEformate could be maintained at around 90% after 36 h of ECR operation. The long-term durability for formate production was attributed to the fact that the in situ reconstructed Bi2O2CO3 could retain the Bi-O active sites in the structure. These results offer an opportunity to design CO2 reduction electrocatalysts with high activity and selectivity for potential applications.

In-modified Sn-MOFs with high catalytic performance in formate electrosynthesis from aqueous carbon dioxide

Electrochemical reduction of carbon dioxide (CO2ER) has become an effective solution to relieve the energy crisis and tackle climate change. In this study, a series of tin-based organic frameworks modified by In (Sn-MOF/Inx) were successfully synthesized via a simple hydrothermal method and explored for high formate-selective CO2ER. The pure Sn-MOF exhibits maximum formate selectivity with a faradaic efficiency (FEformate) of approximately 85.0% and a current density of 15 mA cm-2 at -1.16 VRHE, while the In (6%)-modified Sn-MOF (Sn-MOF/In6) delivers a much higher maximum FEformate (around 97.5%) and a current density of 16 mA cm-2 at -0.96 VRHE. Remarkably, the Sn-MOF/In6 exhibits a significantly larger specific surface area (183.3 m2 g-1) compared to the Sn-MOF (65.2 m2 g-1). These findings indicate that introducing In, an alien element with a slightly different outer orbital electron number from that of Sn, can significantly boost the selectivity and activity for CO2ER to formate. This study presents an efficient way to modify MOF catalysts through a well-designed introducing process.

Applications of Metal-Organic Frameworks and Their Derivatives in Electrochemical CO2 Reduction

Electrochemically reducing CO2 to more reduced chemical species is a promising way that not only enables the conversion of intermittent energy resources to stable fuels, but also helps to build a closed-loop anthropogenic carbon cycle. Among various electrocatalysts for electrochemical CO2 reduction, multifunctional metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have been employed as highly efficient and selective heterogeneous electrocatalysts due to their ultrahigh porosity and topologically diverse structures. Up to now, great progress has been achieved in the design and synthesis of highly active and selective MOF-related catalysts for electrochemical CO2 reduction reaction (CO2RR), and their corresponding reaction mechanisms have been thoroughly studied. In this review, we summarize the recent progress of applying MOFs and their derivatives in CO2RR, with a focus on the design strategies for electrocatalysts and electrolyzers. We first discussed the reaction mechanisms for different CO2RR products and introduced the commonly applied electrolyzer configurations in the current CO2RR system. Then, an overview of several categories of products (CO, HCOOH, CH4, CH3OH, and multi-carbon chemicals) generated from MOFs or their derivatives via CO2RR was discussed. Finally, we offer some insights and perspectives for the future development of MOFs and their derivatives in electrochemical CO2 reduction. We aim to provide new insights into this field and further guide future research for large-scale applications.

Morphology control through the synthesis of metal-organic frameworks

Designable morphology and predictable properties are the most challenging goals in material engineering. Features such as shape, size, porosity, agglomeration ratio significantly affect the final properties of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) and can be regulated throughout synthesis parameters but require a deep understanding of the mechanisms of MOFs formation. Herein, we systematically summarize the effects of the individual synthesis factors, such as pH of reaction mixture, including acidic or basic character of modulators, temperature, solvents types, surfactants type and content and ionic liquids on the morphology of growing MOFs. We identified main mechanisms of MOFs' growth leading to different morphology of final particles and next systematically discuss the effect of miscellaneous parameters on MOFs morphology based on the main mechanisms related to the nucleation, growth and formation of final MOFs structure, including coordination modulation, protonation/deprotonation acting and modulation by surfactants or capping agents. The effect of microwaves and ultrasound employment during synthesis is also considered due to their affecting especially nucleation and particles growing steps during MOFs formation.

Rapid synthesis of bismuth-organic frameworks as selective antimicrobial materials against microbial biofilms

Antibiotic resistance is a global public health threat, and urgent actions should be undertaken for developing alternative antimicrobial strategies and approaches. Notably, bismuth drugs exhibit potent antimicrobial effects on various pathogens and promising efficacy in tackling SARS-CoV-2 and related infections. As such, bismuth-based materials could precisely combat pathogenic bacteria and effectively treat the resultant infections and inflammatory diseases through a controlled release of Bi ions for targeted drug delivery. Currently, it is a great challenge to rapidly and massively manufacture bismuth-based particles, and yet there are no reports on effectively constructing such porous antimicrobial-loaded particles. Herein, we have developed two rapid approaches (i.e., ultrasound-assisted and agitation-free methods) to synthesizing bismuth-based materials with ellipsoid- (Ellipsoids) and rod-like (Rods) morphologies respectively, and fully characterized physicochemical properties. Rods with a porous structure were confirmed as bismuth metal-organic frameworks (Bi-MOF) and aligned with the crystalline structure of CAU-17. Importantly, the formation of Rods was a 'two-step' crystallization process of growing almond-flake-like units followed by stacking into the rod-like structure. The size of Bi-MOF was precisely controlled from micro-to nano-scales by varying concentrations of metal ions and their ratio to the ligand. Moreover, both Ellipsoids and Rods showed excellent biocompatibility with human gingival fibroblasts and potent antimicrobial effects on the Gram-negative oral pathogens including Aggregatibacter actinomycetemcomitans, Porphyromonas gingivalis and Fusobacterium nucleatum. Both Ellipsoids and Rods at 50 ​μg/mL could disrupt the bacterial membranes, and particularly eliminate P. gingivalis biofilms. This study demonstrates highly efficient and facile approaches to synthesizing bismuth-based particles. Our work could enrich the administration modalities of metallic drugs for promising antibiotic-free healthcare.

Surface-Oxygen-Rich Bi@C Nanoparticles for High-Efficiency Electroreduction of CO2 to Formate

The electrochemical CO₂ reduction reaction (CO₂RR) is a promising strategy to alleviate excessive CO₂ levels in the atmosphere and produce value-added feedstocks and fuels. However, the synthesis of high-efficiency and robust electrocatalysts remains a great challenge. This work reports the green preparation of surface-oxygen-rich carbon-nanorod-supported bismuth nanoparticles (SOR Bi@C NPs) for an efficient CO₂RR toward formate. The resultant SOR Bi@C NPs catalyst displays a Faradaic efficiency of more than 91% for formate generation over a wide potential range of 440 mV. Ex situ XPS and XANES and in situ Raman spectroscopy demonstrate that the Bi-O/Bi (110) structure in the pristine SOR Bi@C NPs can remain stable during the CO₂RR process. DFT calculations reveal that the Bi-O/Bi (110) structure can facilitate the formation of the *OCHO intermediate. This work provides an approach to the development of high-efficiency Bi-based catalysts for the CO₂RR and offers a unique insight into the exploration of advanced electrocatalysts.

Modulating p-Orbital of Bismuth Nanosheet by Nickel Doping for Electrocatalytic Carbon Dioxide Reduction Reaction

Electrochemical reduction of CO₂ (CO₂ RR) to value-added chemicals is an effective way to harvest renewable energy and utilize carbon dioxide. However, the electrocatalysts for CO₂ RR suffer from insufficient activity and selectivity due to the limitation of CO₂ activation. In this work, a Ni-doped Bi nanosheet (Ni@Bi-NS) electrocatalyst is synthesized for the electrochemical reduction of CO₂ to HCOOH. Physicochemical characterization methods are extensively used to investigate the composition and structure of the materials. Electrochemical results reveal that for the production of HCOOH, the obtained Ni@Bi-NS exhibits an equivalent current density of 51.12 mA cm^-2 at -1.10 V, which is much higher than the pure Bi-NS (18.00 mA cm^-2 at -1.10 V). A high Faradaic efficiency over 92.0 % for HCOOH is achieved in a wide potential range from -0.80 to -1.10 V, and particularly, the highest efficiency of 98.4 % is achieved at -0.90 V. Both experimental and theoretical results reveal that the superior activity and selectivity are attributed to the doping effect of Ni on the Bi nanosheet. The density functional theory calculation reveals that upon doping, the charge is transferred from Ni to the adjacent Bi atoms, which shifts the p-orbital electronic density states towards the Fermi level. The resultant strong orbital hybridization between Bi and the π* orbitals of CO₂ facilitates the formation of *OCHO intermediates and favors its activation. This work provides an effective strategy to develop active and selective electrocatalysts for CO₂ RR by modulating the electronic density state.
