Needle morphological evidence of the homoploid hybrid origin of Pinus densata based on analysis of artificial hybrids and the putative parents, Pinus tabuliformis and Pinus yunnanensis

Characteristics of airborne particles retained on conifer needles across China in winter and preliminary evaluation of the capacity of trees in haze mitigation

To fully understand the characteristics of particulate matter (PM) retained on plant leaves (PMR) and the effect of vegetation on haze on a large spatial scale, we investigated needle samples collected from 78 parks and campuses in 31 cities (30 provincial cities) of China and developed a comprehensive method to characterise PMR. Both the PMR load (including water-insoluble particulate matter (WIPM), water-soluble inorganic ions (WSIS) and water-soluble organic matter (WSOM)), with a mean value of 554 ± 345 mg m^-2 leaf area, and component profiles of PMR showed obvious spatial variation across the cities. Though haze pollution levels vary greatly among the 31 cities, the PM retention capacity of needles does not depend on haze level because PMR generally reaches saturation before precipitation in winter. The water-soluble component (WSC, the sum of WSIS and WSOM) accounted for 52.3% of PMR on average, among which WSIS and WSOM contributed 21.4% and 30.9% to PMR, respectively. The dominant ions of WSIS in PMR in the cities were Ca²⁺, K⁺ and NO₃^-, indicating that raised dust, biomass combustion and traffic exhaust are significant sources of PM in China. Compared with previous reports, the particle size distributions of PMR and PM across China were consistent, with fine PM (PM_2.5) constituting a substantial proportion (43.8 ± 17.0%) of PMR. These results prove that trees can effectively remove fine particles from the air, thereby reducing human exposure to inhalable PM. We proposed a method to estimate the annual amount of PMR on Cedrus deodara, with an average value of 11.9 ± 9.6 t km^-2 canopy yr^-1 in China. Compared with the load of dust fall (atmospheric particles naturally falling on the ground, average of 138 ± 164 t km^-2 land area yr^-1 in China), we conclude that trees play a significant role in mitigating haze pollution.

The retention characteristics for water-soluble and water-insoluble particulate matter of five tree species along an air pollution gradient in Beijing, China

The air purification potential of plants has been widely studied and recognized. However, their specific capacities in retaining water-soluble (WSPM) and water-insoluble (WIPM) atmospheric particulate matter (PM) are still unclear. In order to recommend tree species with high air phytoremediation ability, the retention characteristics for WSPM and WIPM of five tree species under different haze pollution levels and PM retention durations in Beijing were evaluated after introducing ultrasonic cleaning procedure to the conventional leaf cleaning methods. The daily PM amount retained these species in the six central districts in Beijing (SCBD) was roughly estimated based on the field tree survey data in 171 plots randomly distributed within the Fifth Ring Road. The updated leaf cleaning method improved the evaluation accuracy for WSPM and WIPM by 54% and 31%, respectively. The particles retained by the broadleaf and coniferous species were mainly composed of WSPM (71%) and WIPM (64%), respectively. The diameter distribution of PM varied markedly with species, PM retention duration, and pollution level. However, it always showed a unimodal pattern for WSPM and no uniform patterns for WIPM. The average relative capacities of different species in retaining WSPM of TSP (PM ≤ 100 μm) were more stable with time, and the corresponding rank was Sophora japonica > Salix babylonica > Ginkgo biloba > Pinus tabuliformis > Sabina chinensis. Whereas, as to the WIPM of TSP, their order changed to S. japonica > P. tabuliformis > S. babylonica > G. biloba > S. chinensis. During the study period, the TPM (WIPM+WSPM) of TSP retained by these species per day in the SCBD reached 132.6 t (76.1 t WSPM + 56.5 t WIPM), accounting for a considerable proportion of the daily dust-fall amount. These findings can contribute to selecting greening tree species and managing the urban forest to improve urban air quality.

Leaf size variations in a dominant desert shrub, Reaumuria soongarica, adapted to heterogeneous environments

The climate in arid Central Asia (ACA) has changed rapidly in recent decades, but the ecological consequences of this are far from clear. To predict the impacts of climate change on ecosystem functioning, greater attention should be given to the relationships between leaf functional traits and environmental heterogeneity. As a dominant constructive shrub widely distributed in ACA, Reaumuria soongarica provided us with an ideal model to understand how leaf functional traits of desert ecosystems responded to the heterogeneous environments of ACA. Here, to determine the influences of genetic and ecological factors, we characterized species-wide variations in leaf traits among 30 wild populations of R. soongarica and 16 populations grown in a common garden. We found that the leaf length, width, and leaf length to width ratio (L/W) of the northern lineage were significantly larger than those of other genetic lineages, and principal component analysis based on the in situ environmental factors distinguished the northern lineage from the other lineages studied. With increasing latitude, leaf length, width, and L/W in the wild populations increased significantly. Leaf length and L/W were negatively correlated with altitude, and first increased and then decreased with increasing mean annual temperature (MAT) and mean annual precipitation (MAP). Stepwise regression analyses further indicated that leaf length variation was mainly affected by latitude. However, leaf width was uncorrelated with altitude, MAT, or MAP. The common garden trial showed that leaf width variation among the eastern populations was caused by both local adaptation and phenotypic plasticity. Our findings suggest that R. soongarica preferentially changes leaf length to adjust leaf size to cope with environmental change. We also reveal phenotypic evidence for ecological speciation of R. soongarica. These results will help us better understand and predict the consequences of climate change for desert ecosystem functioning.

Rapid generation of ecologically relevant behavioral novelty in experimental cichlid hybrids

The East African cichlid radiations are characterized by repeated and rapid diversification into many distinct species with different ecological specializations and by a history of hybridization events between nonsister species. Such hybridization might provide important fuel for adaptive radiation. Interspecific hybrids can have extreme trait values or novel trait combinations and such transgressive phenotypes may allow some hybrids to explore ecological niches neither of the parental species could tap into. Here, we investigate the potential of second-generation (F2) hybrids between two generalist cichlid species from Lake Malawi to exploit a resource neither parental species is specialized on: feeding by sifting sand. Some of the F2 hybrids phenotypically resembled fish of species that are specialized on sand sifting. We combined experimental behavioral and morphometric approaches to test whether the F2 hybrids are transgressive in both morphology and behavior related to sand sifting. We then performed a quantitative trait loci (QTL) analysis using RADseq markers to investigate the genetic architecture of morphological and behavioral traits. We show that transgression is present in several morphological traits, that novel trait combinations occur, and we observe transgressive trait values in sand sifting behavior in some of the F2 hybrids. Moreover, we find QTLs for morphology and for sand sifting behavior, suggesting the existence of some loci with moderate to large effects. We demonstrate that hybridization has the potential to rapidly generate novel and ecologically relevant phenotypes that may be suited to a niche neither of the parental species occupies. Interspecific hybridization may thereby contribute to the rapid generation of ecological diversity in cichlid radiations.

Interspecific hybridization can generate functional novelty in cichlid fish

The role of interspecific hybridization in evolution is still being debated. Interspecific hybridization has been suggested to facilitate the evolution of ecological novelty, and hence the invasion of new niches and adaptive radiation when ecological opportunity is present beyond the parental species niches. On the other hand, hybrids between two ecologically divergent species may perform less well than parental species in their respective niches because hybrids would be intermediate in performance in both niches. The evolutionary consequences of hybridization may hence be context-dependent, depending on whether ecological opportunities, beyond those of the parental species, do or do not exist. Surprisingly, these complementary predictions may never have been tested in the same experiment in animals. To do so, we investigate if hybrids between ecologically distinct cichlid species perform less well than the parental species when feeding on food either parent is adapted to, and if the same hybrids perform better than their parents when feeding on food none of the species are adapted to. We generated two first-generation hybrid crosses between species of African cichlids. In feeding efficiency experiments we measured the performance of hybrids and parental species on food types representing both parental species niches and additional 'novel' niches, not used by either of the parental species but by other species in the African cichlid radiations. We found that hybrids can have higher feeding efficiencies on the 'novel' food types but typically have lower efficiencies on parental food types when compared to parental species. This suggests that hybridization can generate functional variation that can be of ecological relevance allowing the access to resources outside of either parental species niche. Hence, we provide support for the hypothesis of ecological context-dependency of the evolutionary impact of interspecific hybridization.

Genetic data reveals a complex history of multiple admixture events in presently allopatric wild gingers (Asarum spp.) showing intertaxonomic clinal variation in calyx lobe length

Clinal variation is a major pattern of observed phenotypic diversity and identifying underlying demographic processes is a necessary step to understand the establishment of clinal variation. The wild ginger series Sakawanum (genus Asarum) comprises four taxa, which exhibit intertaxonomic clinal variation in calyx lobe length across two continental islands isolated by a sea strait. To test alternative hypotheses of the evolutionary history and to determine the implications for the formation of clinal variation, we conducted approximate Bayesian computation (ABC) analysis and ecological niche modeling (ENM). ABC analysis indicated that the scenario assuming multiple admixture events was strongly supported. This scenario assumed two admixture events occurred between morphologically distinct taxa, likely leading to the generation of intermediate taxa. One of the admixture events was estimated to have occurred during the last glacial maximum (LGM), during which the taxa were estimated to have formed a common refugia in southern areas by ENM analysis. Although four taxa are currently distributed allopatrically on different islands and trans-oceanic dispersal appears unlikely, the formation of a land bridge and the geographic range shift to refugia would have allowed secondary contact between previously isolated taxa. This study suggests that clinal variation can be shaped by demographic history including multiple admixtures due to climatic oscillations.

An investigation of the leaf retention capacity, efficiency and mechanism for atmospheric particulate matter of five greening tree species in Beijing, China

Urban trees have the potential to reduce air pollution, but the retention capacity and efficiency of different tree species for atmospheric particulate matter (PM) accumulation and the underlying mechanism hasn't been well understood. To select tree species with high air purification abilities, the supplementing ultrasonic cleaning (UC) procedure was first introduced into the conventional leaf cleaning methods [single water cleaning (WC) or plus brush cleaning (BC)] for eluting the leaf-retained PM. Further updates to the methodology were applied to investigate the retention capacity, efficiency, and mechanism for PM of five typical greening tree species in Beijing, China. Meanwhile, the particle size distribution of PM on the leaves, the PM retention efficiencies of easily removable (ERP), difficult-to-remove (DRP) and totally removable (TRP) particles on the leaf (AE_leaf), and the individual tree scales were estimated. The experimental leaf samples were collected from trees with similar sizes 4 (SDR) and 14days (LDR) after rainfall. When the leaves were cleaned by WC+BC, there was, on average, 29%-46% of the PM remaining on the leaves of different species, which could be removed almost completely if UC was supplemented. From SDR to LDR, the mass of the leaf-retained PM increased greatly, and the particle size distribution changed markedly for all species except for Sophorajaponica. Pinus tabuliformis retains particles with the largest average diameter (34.2μm), followed by Ginkgo biloba (20.5μm), Sabina chinensis (16.4μm), Salix babylonica (16.0μm), and S. japonica (13.1μm). S. japonica and S. chinensis had the highest AE_leaf to retain the TRP and ERP of both PM₁ and PM_1-2.5, respectively. Conversely, S. babylonica and P. tabuliformis could retain both TRP and ERP of PM_2.5-5 and PM_5-10, and PM_>10 and TSP with the highest AE_leaf, respectively. In conclusion, our results could be useful in selecting greening tree species with high air purification abilities.

Evidence for continual hybridization rather than hybrid speciation between Ligularia duciformis and L. paradoxa (Asteraceae)

Background

Hybrids possess phenotypic traits that are often intermediate between their parental taxa, which commonly serves as evidence of hybridization in morphological analyses. Natural hybridization has been shown to occur frequently in Ligularia (Asteraceae). In a previous study, Ligularia ×maoniushanensis was demonstrated as a natural hybrid species between L. duciformis and L. paradoxa based on morphological and reproductive traits.

Methods

We used three chloroplast (cpDNA) fragments (psbA-trnH, trnL-rpl32 and trnQ-5′rps16), the nuclear ribosomal internal transcribed spacer (nrITS), and co-dominant SSR and dominant ISSR markers to study natural hybridization between L. duciformis and L. paradoxa growing sympatrically in two locations. Parental taxa were inferred using network analyses of cpDNA and nrITS haplotypes. Admixture among individuals was examined using the Bayesian clustering programs STRUCTURE and NewHybrids based on the SSR and ISSR data; and potential introgression in the SSR loci was assessed using the INTROGRESS package.

Results

The putative parental species were clearly distinguished from other sympatric Ligularia species by nrITS data, and L. ×maoniushanensis individuals were confirmed to be the hybrid offspring of L. duciformis and L. paradoxa. Moreover, introgression was detected among several individuals morphologically identified as L. duciformis or L. paradoxa. Analyses of the cpDNA data revealed primarily unidirectional hybridization between L. duciformis and L. paradoxa, with L. paradoxa as the maternal parent in Mt. Maoniu, whereas bidirectional but asymmetrical hybridization was inferred to occur in Heihai Lake. The STRUCTURE analyses based on the SSR data detected two distinct clusters among the three taxa. The NewHybrids analyses showed that individuals circumscribed as L. ×maoniushanensis were dominated by early- and later-generation and backcrossing hybrids. The NewHybrids results based on the ISSR data were congruent with SSR results. In addition, introgression was detected in some SSR loci, and heterogeneity among loci was found in terms of detected patterns of introgression.

Conclusions

Our data provide strong evidence for hybridization and introgression between L. duciformis and L. paradoxa. Ligularia ×maoniushanensis was demonstrated to be of hybrid origin. Since no evident reproductive isolation was found between the two parental species, detected hybrids appear to be part of hybrid swarms resulting from frequent and ongoing gene flow, which might impede the formation of a new hybrid species.

The Role of Forensic Botany in Solving a Case: Scientific Evidence on the Falsification of a Crime Scene

Forensic botany can provide useful information for pathologists, particularly on crime scene investigation. We report the case of a man who arrived at the hospital and died shortly afterward. The body showed widespread electrical lesions. The statements of his brother and wife about the incident aroused a large amount of suspicion in the investigators. A crime scene investigation was carried out, along with a botanical morphological survey on small vegetations found on the corpse. An autopsy was also performed. Botanical analysis showed some samples of Xanthium spinosum, thus leading to the discovery of the falsification of the crime scene although the location of the true crime scene remained a mystery. The botanical analysis, along with circumstantial data and autopsy findings, led to the discovery of the real crime scene and became crucial as part of the legal evidence regarding the falsity of the statements made to investigators.
