Omnivory does not preclude strong trophic cascades

Food web collapse and regime shift following goldfish introduction in permanent ponds

In a global context of invasive alien species (IAS), native predators are often eradicated by functionally different IAS, which may induce complex cascading consequences on ecosystem functioning because of the key role predators play in structuring communities and stabilizing food webs. In permanent ponds, the most abundant freshwater systems on Earth, global human-mediated introductions of alien omnivores such as the pet trade goldfish are driving broad-scale patterns of native predators' exclusion, but cascading consequences on food web structure and functioning are critically understudied. We compared food webs of naturally fishless ponds versus ponds where dominant native predators (newts) had been extirpated by invasive goldfish within the last decade. Integrating community-wide isotopic, taxonomic and functional traits approaches, our study reveals that pond food webs collapsed in both vertical and horizontal dimensions following goldfish introduction and the associated exclusion of native predators. Consumer taxonomic diversity was drastically reduced, essentially deprived of amphibians as well as predatory and mobile macroinvertebrates to the profit of burrowing, lower trophic level consumers (detritivores). Changes in community structure and function underlined a regime shift from a macrophyte-dominated system mainly characterized by benthic primary production (periphyton), to a macrophyte-depleted state of ponds hosting communities mainly associated with phytoplankton primary production and detritus accumulation, with higher tolerance to eutrophication and low dissolved oxygen concentration. Results underline major impacts of widely introduced omnivores such as the goldfish on the functioning of pond ecosystems with potentially dramatic consequences on the key ecosystem services they deliver, such as global biodiversity support or water quality improvement. They also shed light on the key role of submerged aquatic vegetation in supporting diverse communities and complex food webs in shallow lentic systems and call for urgent consideration of threats posed by IAS on ponds' ecosystems by managers and policymakers.

Strong Behavioral Effects of Omnivorous Fish on Amphibian Oviposition Habitat Selection: Potential Consequences for Ecosystem Shifts

Perceived predation risk to offspring may have similar ultimate community-level impacts to those of consumptive trophic interactions. The present study investigated the behavioral effects of common carp Cyprinus carpio–an omnivorous fish capable of triggering an ecosystem shift to an algae-dominated state–on anurans, using a natural experiment conducted in a system of fish-stocked ponds. We compared oviposition patterns and larval densities of anurans and abundance of zooplankton and phytoplankton in ponds where fish were virtually absent and ponds where common carp was dominant. All studied anuran species bred in fish-poor ponds, while in ponds with high fish densities most of them oviposited infrequently or virtually did not breed. Oviposition habitat selection coupled with fish trophic pressure resulted in diametrically different tadpole densities between fish-poor and fish-dominated ponds. The alimentary tract contents of tadpoles of three locally common anurans, Pelobates fuscus, Hyla orientalis, and Rana temporaria, contained large numbers of unicellular algae, but also significant numbers of zooplanktonic grazers. According to stable nitrogen isotope analyses, tadpoles occupied a trophic level similar to a primary consumer, snail Lymnaea stagnalis, indicating that they fed mainly on algae. While total biomass of crustacean zooplankton did not differ between pond types, chlorophyll a concentrations were low in fish-poor ponds compared to fish-dominated ponds and negatively related to total tadpole biomass. Our findings indicate that scarcity of anuran larvae, resulting mainly from the behavioral responses of breeding anurans to fish predation risk, may facilitate algal production, although ecosystem shifts in the presence of fish occur along more pathways than a top-down cascade.

Inquiline predator increases nutrient-cycling efficiency of Nepenthes rafflesiana pitchers

The modified-leaf pitchers of Nepenthes rafflesiana pitcher plants are aquatic, allochthonous ecosystems that are inhabited by specialist inquilines and sustained by the input of invertebrate prey. Detritivorous inquilines are known to increase the nutrient-cycling efficiency (NCE) of pitchers but it is unclear whether predatory inquilines that prey on these detritivores decrease the NCE of pitchers by reducing detritivore populations or increase the NCE of pitchers by processing nutrients that may otherwise be locked up in detritivore biomass. Nepenthosyrphus is a small and poorly studied genus of hoverflies and the larvae of one such species is a facultatively detritivorous predator that inhabits the pitchers of N. rafflesiana. We fitted a consumer-resource model to experimental data collected from this system. Simulations showed that systems containing the predator at equilibrium almost always had higher NCEs than those containing only prey (detritivore) species. We showed using a combination of simulated predator/prey exclusions that the processing of the resource through multiple pathways and trophic levels in this system is more efficient than that accomplished through fewer pathways and trophic levels. Our results thus support the vertical diversity hypothesis, which predicts that greater diversity across trophic levels results in greater ecosystem functioning.
