Optimizing nitrogen application position to change root distribution in soil and regulate maize growth and yield formation in a wide-narrow row cropping system: pot and field experiments

The wide-and narrow-row cropping technology used for maize has the advantages of protecting cultivated soil and improving the population structure in maize fields. However, the relationship between nitrogen application position and root interactions has not been determined. Through pot and field experiments, we evaluated the effects of two nitrogen application positions ((narrow row nitrogen application (RC) and wide row nitrogen application (RN)) and two nitrogen application regimens ((high nitrogen(HN) and low nitrogen(LN)) on root growth and yield composition of wide-narrow row maize during the flowering and harvest stages. In field experiments, RC increased the biomass, length and surface area of competing roots (narrow-row roots, CR) at the flowering stage. The yield and agronomic efficiency of N(AEN) and partial factor productivity of N(PFPN) were increased by RN compared to RC under HN, However, the AEN under LN was significantly lower; There was no significant effect on maize growth and biomass allocation at the same level of application of N. At the flowering stage, the results of CR and non-competing roots (wide-row roots, NCR) was consistent under pot experiments and the field experiments, and the yield under RN was also higher than that under RC, although the difference was not significant. Furthermore, according to the principal component analysis and correlation analysis, the competing roots were the main factor influencing yield and AEN. In conclusion, our study showed that RN is a useful fertilization method to improve overall productivity. All in all, how roots coordinate neighbors and nitrogen spatial heterogeneity is a complex ecological process, and its trophic behavior deserves further study.

Allelopathy and allelobiosis: efficient and economical alternatives in agroecosystems

Chemical interactions in plants often involve plant allelopathy and allelobiosis. Allelopathy is an ecological phenomenon leading to interference among organisms, while allelobiosis is the transmission of information among organisms. Crop failures and low yields caused by inappropriate management can be related to both allelopathy and allelobiosis. Therefore, research on these two phenomena and the role of chemical substances in both processes will help us to understand and upgrade agroecosystems. In this review, substances involved in allelopathy and allelobiosis in plants are summarized. The influence of environmental factors on the generation and spread of these substances is discussed, and relationships between allelopathy and allelobiosis in interspecific, intraspecific, plant-micro-organism, plant-insect, and mechanisms, are summarized. Furthermore, recent results on allelopathy and allelobiosis in agroecosystem are summarized and will provide a reference for the future application of allelopathy and allelobiosis in agroecosystem.

Functions of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi in regulating endangered species Heptacodium miconioides growth and drought stress tolerance

KEY MESSAGE

The important values of AMF in regulating endangered species Heptacodium miconioides growth and drought stress tolerance. The wild endangered tree Heptacodium miconioides is distributed sporadically in mountainous areas and often subjected to various abiotic stresses, such as drought. The mutualistic association between plants and arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) is known to have a significant impact on plant growth and their ability to withstand drought conditions. However, the role of AMF in H. miconioides seedlings in regulating drought tolerance remains unknown. This study investigated the ability of AMF symbionts to mitigate drought and their underlying mechanism on H. miconioides leaves. The results showed that drought stress dramatically decreased the leaf biomass and damaged the chloroplast structure in seedlings. Conversely, inoculation with AMF noticeably alleviated the deleterious effects of drought stress by restoring leaf morphology and improving the photosynthetic capacity. Moreover, plants inoculated with AMF enhanced the proportion of palisade tissue to spongy tissue in the leaves and the size of starch grains and number of plastoglobules in the chloroplast ultrastructure. A transcriptomic analysis showed that 2157 genes (691 upregulated and 1466 downregulated) were differentially expressed between drought stress with AMF inoculation and drought treatment. Further examination demonstrated that the genes exhibiting differential expression were predominantly associated with the advancement of photosynthesis, sucrose and starch metabolism, nitrogen metabolism, chloroplast development, and phenylpropanoid biosynthetic pathways, and the key potential genes were screened. These findings conclusively provided the physiological and molecular mechanisms that underlie improved drought resistance in H. miconioides in the presence of AMF, which could contribute to improving the survival and species conservation of H. miconioides.

Interplant carbon and nitrogen transfers mediated by common arbuscular mycorrhizal networks: beneficial pathways for system functionality

Arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) are ubiquitous in soil and form nutritional symbioses with ~80% of vascular plant species, which significantly impact global carbon (C) and nitrogen (N) biogeochemical cycles. Roots of plant individuals are interconnected by AMF hyphae to form common AM networks (CAMNs), which provide pathways for the transfer of C and N from one plant to another, promoting plant coexistence and biodiversity. Despite that stable isotope methodologies (¹³C, ¹⁴C and ¹⁵N tracer techniques) have demonstrated CAMNs are an important pathway for the translocation of both C and N, the functioning of CAMNs in ecosystem C and N dynamics remains equivocal. This review systematically synthesizes both laboratory and field evidence in interplant C and N transfer through CAMNs generated through stable isotope methodologies and highlights perspectives on the system functionality of CAMNs with implications for plant coexistence, species diversity and community stability. One-way transfers from donor to recipient plants of 0.02-41% C and 0.04-80% N of recipient C and N have been observed, with the reverse fluxes generally less than 15% of donor C and N. Interplant C and N transfers have practical implications for plant performance, coexistence and biodiversity in both resource-limited and resource-unlimited habitats. Resource competition among coexisting individuals of the same or different species is undoubtedly modified by such C and N transfers. Studying interplant variability in these transfers with ¹³C and ¹⁵N tracer application and natural abundance measurements could address the eco physiological significance of such CAMNs in sustainable agricultural and natural ecosystems.
