Abstract
The influence of dopant molecules on the structure and functionality of spin-crossover (SCO) materials is surveyed. Two aspects of the topic are well established. Firstly, isomorphous inert metal ion dopants in SCO lattices are a useful probe of the energetics of SCO processes. Secondly, molecular alloys of iron(II)/triazole coordination polymers containing mixtures of ligands were used to tune their spin-transitions towards room temperature. More recent examples of these and related materials are discussed that reveal new insights into these questions. Complexes which are not isomorphous can also be co-crystallised, either as solid solutions of the precursor molecules or as a random distribution of homo- and hetero-leptic centres in a molecular alloy. This could be a powerful method to manipulate SCO functionality. Published molecular alloys show different SCO behaviours, which may or may not include allosteric switching of their chemically distinct metal sites.

Abstract
The structure-property correlation of [Co(terpy)2]2+, which shows a spin crossover at 270 K, has been computationally investigated based on its variable temperature crystal structures. Among the employed DFT functionals, only the re-parametrized hybrid B3LYP* functional could describe the correct spin transition temperature. Explicit consideration of metal-ligand sigma bonding with dynamic electron correlation is found to be necessary for an accurate determination of the SCO temperature with multi-reference calculations. The metal-ligand axial bond distances are found to be the most significant internal coordinates in deciding SCO. A small structural change along the axial distance causes a change in the t2g orbital splitting pattern and a reorientation of the magnetization axes at the SCO temperature. The complex shows an unusual triaxial magnetic anisotropy, with an easy axis of magnetization developing at higher temperatures. The strong coupling of low-frequency wagging motion of the two terpyridine ligands with the spin states of the complex provides an effective pathway for the relaxation of magnetization, resulting in a small magnetic anisotropy barrier.

Abstract
This study explored the development of functional dyes using aluminum, focusing on aluminum-based dinuclear triple-stranded helicates, and examined the effects of substituent variations on their structural and optical properties. Key findings revealed that the modification of methyl groups to the pyrrole positions significantly extended the conjugation system, resulting in a red shift in the absorption and emission spectra. Conversely, the modification of methyl groups at the methine positions due to steric hindrances increased the torsion angle of the ligands, leading to a blue shift in the absorption and emission spectra. A common feature across all complexes was that in the excited state, one of the three ligands underwent significant structural relaxation. This led to a pronounced Stokes shift and minimal spectra overlap with high photoluminescence behaviors. Moreover, our research extended to the optical resolution of the newly synthesized complexes by analyzing the chiroptical properties of the resulting enantiomers, including their circular dichroism and circularly polarized luminescence. These insights offer valuable contributions to the design and application of novel aluminum-based functional dyes, potentially influencing a range of fields, from materials science to optoelectronics.

Abstract
Here we present the magnetic properties of two cobalt complexes formulated as: [Co(SCN)2(L)2] (1) and (H2L)2[Co(SCN)4]·H2O (2) (L = 1-(2-pyrimidyl)piperazine). The two compounds contain isolated tetrahedral CoII complexes with important intermolecular interactions that lead to the presence of a canted antiferromagnetic order below 11.5 and 10.0 K, with coercive fields at 2 K of 38 and 68 mT, respectively. Theoretical calculations have been used to explain this behaviour. Hirshfeld surface analysis shows the presence of strong intermolecular interactions in both compounds. The crystal geometries were used for geometry optimization using the DFT method. From the topological properties, electrostatic potential maps and molecular orbital analysis, information about the noncovalent interaction and chemical reactivity was obtained.

Abstract
Cooperative spin crossover transitions with thermal hysteresis loops are rarely observed in cobalt(II) complexes. Herein, two new mononuclear cobalt(II) complexes with hysteretic spin crossover at relatively high temperatures (from 320 to 400 K), namely, [Co(terpy-CH2OH)2]·X2 (terpy-CH2OH = 4'-(hydroxymethyl)-2,2';6',2″-terpyridine, X = SCN-(1) and SeCN- (2)), have been synthesized and characterized structurally and magnetically. Both compounds are mononuclear CoII complexes with two chelating terpy-CH2OH ligands. Magnetic measurements revealed the existence of the hysteretic SCO transitions for both complexes. For compound 1, a one-step transition with T1/2↑= 334.5 K was observed upon heating, while a two-step transition is observed upon cooling with T1/2↓(1) = 329.3 K and T1/2↓(2) = 324.1 K (at a temperature sweep rate of 5 K/min). As for compound 2, a hysteresis loop with a width of 5 K (T1/2↓ = 391.6 K and T1/2↑ = 396.6 K, at a sweep rate of 5 K/min) can be observed. Thanks to the absence of the crystallized lattice solvents, their single crystals are stable enough at high temperatures for the structure determination at both spin states, which reveals that the hysteretic SCO transitions in both complexes originate from the crystallographic phase transitions involving a thermally induced order-disorder transition of the dangling -CH2OH groups in the ligand. This work shows that the modification of the terpy ligand has an important effect on the magnetic properties of the resulting cobalt(II) complexes.

Abstract
Two mononuclear nickel(II) complexes of the formula [Ni(terpyCOOH)2](ClO4)2∙4H2O (1) and [Ni(terpyepy)2](ClO4)2 MeOH (2) [terpyCOOH = 4'-carboxyl-2,2':6',2″-terpyridine and terpyepy = 4'-[(2-pyridin-4-yl)ethynyl]-2,2':6',2″-terpyridine] have been prepared and their structures determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. Complexes 1 and 2 are mononuclear compounds, where the nickel(II) ions are six-coordinate by the six nitrogen atoms from two tridentate terpy moieties. The mean values of the equatorial Ni-N bond distances [2.11(1) and 2.12(1) Å for Ni(1) at 1 and 2, respectively, are somewhat longer than the axial ones [2.008(6) and 2.003(6) Å (1)/2.000(1) and 1.999(1) Å (2)]. The values of the shortest intermolecular nickel-nickel separation are 9.422(1) (1) and 8.901(1) Å (2). Variable-temperature (1.9-200 K) direct current (dc) magnetic susceptibility measurements on polycrystalline samples of 1 and 2 reveal a Curie law behavior in the high-temperature range, which corresponds to magnetically isolated spin triplets, the downturn of the χMT product at lower temperatures being due to zero-field splitting effects (D). Values of D equal to -6.0 (1) and -4.7 cm-1 (2) were obtained through the joint analysis of the magnetic susceptibility data and the field dependence of the magnetization. These results from magnetometry were supported by theoretical calculations. Alternating current (ac) magnetic susceptibility measurements of 1 and 2 in the temperature range 2.0-5.5 K show the occurrence of incipient out-phase signals under applied dc fields, a phenomenon that is characteristic of field-induced Single-Molecule Magnet (SMM) behavior, which herein concerns the 2 mononuclear nickel(II) complexes. This slow relaxation of the magnetization in 1 and 2 has its origin in the axial compression of the octahedral surrounding at their nickel(II) ions that leads to negative values of D. A combination of an Orbach and a direct mechanism accounts for the field-dependent relation phenomena in 1 and 2.

Abstract
4-(tert-Butylsulfanyl)-2,6-di(pyrazol-1-yl)pyridine (L) was obtained in low yield from a one-pot reaction of 2,4,6-trifluoropyridine with 2-methylpropane-2-thiolate and sodium pyrazolate in a 1:1:2 ratio. The materials [FeL2 ][BF4 ]2 ⋅solv (1[BF4 ]2 ⋅solv) and [FeL2 ][ClO4 ]2 ⋅solv (1[ClO4 ]2 ⋅solv; solv=MeNO2 , MeCN or Me2 CO) exhibit a variety of structures and spin-state behaviors including thermal spin-crossover (SCO). Solvent loss on heating 1[BF4 ]2 ⋅x MeNO2 (x≈2.3) occurs in two steps. The intermediate phase exhibits hysteretic SCO around 250 K, involving a "reverse-SCO" step in its warming cycle at a scan rate of 5 K min-1 . The reverse-SCO is not observed in a slower 1 K min-1 measurement, however, confirming its kinetic nature. The final product [FeL2 ][BF4 ]2 ⋅0.75 MeNO2 was crystallographically characterized, and shows abrupt but incomplete SCO at 172 K which correlates with disorder of an L ligand. The asymmetric unit of 1[BF4 ]2 ⋅y Me2 CO (y≈1.6) contains five unique complex molecules, four of which undergo gradual SCO in at least two discrete steps. Low-spin 1[ClO4 ]2 ⋅0.5 Me2 CO is not isostructural with its BF4 - congener, and undergoes single-crystal-to-single-crystal solvent loss with a tripling of the crystallographic unit cell volume, while retaining the P 1 ‾ space group. Three other solvate salts undergo gradual thermal SCO. Two of these are isomorphous at room temperature, but transform to different low-temperature phases when the materials are fully low-spin.

Abstract
Reaction of 1,2-di(tetrazol-2-yl)ethane (ebtz) with Fe(BF4 )2 ⋅6 H2 O in different nitriles yields one-dimensional coordination polymers [Fe(ebtz)2 (RCN)2 ](BF4 )2 ⋅nRCN (n=2 for R=CH3 (1) and n=0 for R=C2 H5 (2) C3 H7 (3), C3 H5 (4), CH2 Cl (5)) exhibiting spin crossover (SCO). SCO in 1 and 3-5 is complete and occurs above 160 K. In 2, it is shifted to lower temperatures and is accompanied by wide hysteresis (T1/2 ↓ =78 K, T1/2 ↑ =123 K) and proceeds extremely slowly. Isothermal (80 K) time-resolved single-crystal X-ray diffraction studies revealed a complex nature for the HS→LS transition in 2. An initial, slow stage is associated with shrinkage of polymeric chains and with reduction of volume at 77 % (in relation to the difference between cell volumes VHS -VLS ) whereas only 16 % of iron(II) ions change spin state. In the second stage, an abrupt SCO occurs, associated with breathing of the crystal lattice along the direction of the Fe-nitrile bonds, while the nitriles reorient. HS→LS switching triggered by light (808 nm) reveals the coupling of spin state and nitrile orientation. The importance of this coupling was confirmed by studies of [Fe(ebtz)2 (C2 H5 CN/C3 H7 CN)2 ](BF4 )2 mixed crystals (2 a, 2 b), showing a shift of T1/2 to higher values and narrowing of the hysteresis loop concomitant with an increase of the fraction of butyronitrile. This increase reduces the capability of nitrile molecules to reorient. Density functional theory (DFT) studies of models of 1-5 suggest a particular possibility of 2 to adopt a low (140-145°) value of its Fe-N-C(propionitrile) angle.

Abstract
Two crystal polymorphs of Ni(cyclam)I2 (cyclam = 1,4,8,11-tetraazacyclotetradecane) were synthesized, and their magnetic properties were investigated. Temperature-dependent X-ray structural analysis and magnetic measurements revealed gradual spin transition in molecular-crystal polymorph trans-[Ni(cyclam)I2] (1a), whereas the zigzag-chain polymorph catena-[Ni(cyclam)(μ-I)]I (1b) did not show an obvious spin transition. The entropy difference between high- and low-spin states of 1a estimated by assuming the spin-equilibrium model is much smaller than those in typical iron(II)-based spin-crossover (SCO) complexes, suggesting that the normal mode softening is less remarkable in 1a. In this system, it is clearly evidenced that the interaction mode responsible to the spin equilibrium in octahedral nickel(II) complexes is highly anistropic, i.e., z-elongation and x,y-shortening of the coordination octahedron.

Abstract
Structural phase transition in [Fe(bbtre)3](ClO4)2·2CH3CN (bbtre = 1,4-di(1-ethyl-1,2,3-triazol-5-yl)butane) plays the role of a switch, allowing spin crossover to be carried out in two ways.

Abstract
The abrupt high spin (HS)→low spin (LS) transition (T↓ 1/2 =136 K) in [Fe(hbtz)2 (CH3 CN)2 ](BF4 )2 (hbtz=1,6-di(tetrazol-2-yl)hexane) is finished at 100 K and further thermal treatment influences the spin crossover. Subsequent heating involves a change of the spin state in the same way (T↑ 1/2 =136 K) on cooling. In contrast, cooling below 100 K triggers different behavior and T↑ 1/2 is shifted to 170 K. The extraordinary structural changes that occurred below 100 K are responsible for the observed diversity of properties. A unique feature of the low-temperature phase is the rebuilding of the anion network expressed by a shift of anions inside the polymeric layer at a distance of 1.2 Å as well as the relative shift of neighboring layers at over 4 Å. These structural alterations, connected with a phase transition, become the origin of the strain, which in most cases causes crystal cleaving. In a sample composed from crystals crushed as a result of the phase transition or as a result of mechanical crumbling, the hysteresis loop vanishes; however, annealing the sample allows to its partial restoration. A replacement of acetonitrile by other nitriles leads to preservation of the polymeric structure and spin crossover, but no phase transition follows.

Abstract
Conformational changes of the bridging ligand and reorientation of the anions are associated with a sequence of HT(HS) ⇆ HT(HS/LS) ⇆ IP(HS) ⇆ LT(LS) transitions accompanied by existence of two hysteresis loops, “normal” and “reverse”, separated by a region of the stability of the HS form.

Abstract
Hydrazone-based derivatives modified by substitution at different positions were utilized to prepare a series of bis-homoleptic cobalt complexes. One species, [CoIII(L1)2]+ (1), which incorporated deprotonated ligands, adopted a Co(iii) diamagnetic ground state. However, the substituent of a hydrogen atom with a methyl group precluded the possibility of deprotonation upon metal coordination, which led to two species, [CoII(L2Me)2]2+ (2) and [CoII(L3NO2)2]2+, (3) which underwent a gradual spin crossover with an adjustable substituent effect and a mixed character of low-spin (doublet) and high-spin (quartet) populations in wide temperature ranges. Depending on the electronic effects of the substituents on the ligand, the multielectron redox behavior of the cobalt center was systematically modulated as well. This result demonstrates redox-switchable spin crossover in a new hydrazone-based Co(ii) system, in which the deprotonation of the coordination pocket and substituent groups in aromatic ligands can have a profound effect on the redox potential and spin state of the metal center. Hydrazone-based derivatives modified by substitution at different positions were utilized to prepare a series of bis-homoleptic cobalt complexes toward multielectron redox and spin crossover.![]()

Abstract
Introducing metal ion coordination as bonding motive into polymer architectures provides new structures and properties for polymeric materials. The metal ions can be part of the backbone or of the side-chains. In the case of linear metallo-polymers the repeat unit bears at least two metal ion receptors in order to facilitate metal-ion induced self-assembly. If the binding constants are sufficiently high, macromolecular assemblies will form in a solution. Likewise, polymeric networks can be formed by metal ion induced crosslinking. The metal ion coordination sites introduce dynamic features, e.g. for self-healing or responsive materials, as well as additional functional properties including spin-crossover, electro-chromism, and reactivity. Terpyridines have attracted attention as receptors in metallo-polymers due to their favorable properties. It is well suited to assemble linear rigid-rod like metallo-polymers in case of rigid ditopic ligands. Terpyridine binds a large number of metal ions and are readily functionalized giving rise to a plethora of available ligands as components in metallo-polymers. By the judicious choice of the metal ions, the design of the ligands, the counter ions and the boundary conditions of self-assembly, the final structure and properties of the resulting metallo-polymers can be tailored at all length scales. Here, we review recent activities in the area of metallo-polymers based on terpyridines as central metal ion receptors.
