Dinuclear CuI and AgI Pyrazolates Supported with Tertiary Phosphines: Synthesis, Structures, and Photophysical Properties

Designing Optical Anisotropy: Silver-Aminoalkylpyridine Nitrate Complexes with Tunable Structures

To introduce a design strategy for improving optical properties, two silver-amino alkylpyridine nitrate complexes, AgC6H8N3O3 and Ag2C14H20N6O6, were successfully synthesized using a recrystallization method. By employing polarizable π-conjugated [NO3-] ions, two types of pyridine ligands, and silver cations with a high affinity for pyridine, we obtained a one-dimensional chain structure with 4-aminomethylpyridine (AgC6H8N3O3) and a zero-dimensional molecular compound by introducing a relatively flexible aliphatic chain with 4-(2-aminoethyl)pyridine (Ag2C14H20N6O6). The compounds crystallize in the triclinic crystal system with the centrosymmetric P-1 space group, exhibiting a change in orientation between the π-conjugated system and the silver ion. Despite similar optical band gaps (3.69 eV for AgC6H8N3O3 and 3.73 eV for Ag2C14H20N6O6), AgC6H8N3O3 shows higher absorption in the 350-600 nm range. Electronic structure calculations support the ultraviolet absorption findings, suggesting that charge transfer with π-conjugated systems influences birefringence. Ag2C14H20N6O6 exhibits experimental birefringence (0.261@546.1 nm) surpassing that of AgC6H8N3O3 (0.212@546.1 nm), placing it among the highest recorded values within metal-pyridine incorporating nitrate complexes. The nonconventional orientation of π-conjugated [NO3-] ions contributes to this phenomenon, enhancing the action of free π-conjugated orbitals. This design strategy for micromodulating the alignment of the π-conjugated system promises to be an effective approach for enhancing optical properties, such as birefringence.

Copper-Catalyzed Hydroamination: Enantioselective Addition of Pyrazoles to Cyclopropenes

Chiral N-cyclopropyl pyrazoles and structurally related heterocycles are prepared using an earth-abundant copper catalyst under mild reaction conditions with high regio-, diastereo-, and enantiocontrol. The observed N2:N1 regioselectivity favors the more hindered nitrogen of the pyrazole. Experimental and DFT studies support a unique mechanism that features a five-centered aminocupration.

Tetranuclear Copper(I) and Silver(I) Pyrazolate Adducts with 1,1'-Dimethyl-2,2'-bibenzimidazole: Influence of Structure on Photophysics

A reaction of a cyclic trinuclear copper(I) or silver(I) pyrazolate complex ([MPz]₃, M = Cu, Ag) with 1,1'-dimethyl-2,2'-bibenzimidazole (L) leads to the formation of tetranuclear adducts decorated by one or two molecules of a diimine ligand, depending on the amount of the ligand added (0.75 or 1.5 equivalents). The coordination of two L molecules stabilizes the formation of a practically idealized tetrahedral four-metal core in the case of a copper-containing complex and a distorted tetrahedron in the case of a Ag analog. In contrast, complexes containing one molecule of diimine possess two types of metals, two- and three-coordinated, forming the significantly distorted central M₄ cores. The diimine ligands are twisted in these complexes with dihedral angles of ca. 50-60°. A TD-DFT analysis demonstrated the preference of a triplet state for the twisted 1,1'-dimethyl-2,2'-bibenzimidazole and a singlet state for the planar geometry. All obtained complexes demonstrated, in a solution, the blue fluorescence of the ligand-centered (LC) nature typical for free diimine. In contrast, a temperature decrease to 77 K stabilized the structure close to that observed in the solid state and activated the triplet states, leading to green phosphorescence at ca. 500 nm. The silver-containing complex Ag₄Pz₄L exhibited dual emission from both the singlet and triplet states, even at room temperature.

Emissive silver(i) cyclic trinuclear complexes with aromatic amine donor pyrazolate derivatives: way to efficiency

Cyclic silver(i) fluorinated pyrazolates containing triphenylamine and carbazole moieties are emissive in solution and the solid state, giving the first example of silver pyrazolate adducts emissive in solution at room temperature.

Mononuclear Copper(I) 3-(2-pyridyl)pyrazole Complexes: The Crucial Role of Phosphine on Photoluminescence

A series of emissive Cu(I) cationic complexes with 3-(2-pyridyl)-5-phenyl-pyrazole and various phosphines: dppbz (1), Xantphos (2), DPEPhos (3), PPh₃ (4), and BINAP (5) were designed and characterized. Complexes obtained exhibit bright yellow-green emission (ca. 520–650 nm) in the solid state with a wide range of QYs (1–78%) and lifetimes (19–119 µs) at 298 K. The photoluminescence efficiency dramatically depends on the phosphine ligand type. The theoretical calculations of buried volumes and excited states explained the emission behavior for 1–5 as well as their lifetimes. The bulky and rigid phosphines promote emission efficiency through the stabilization of singlet and triplet excited states.

Bis(isonicotinamide-κN)silver(I) trifluoromethanesulfonate acetonitrile disolvate

The reaction of silver(I) triflouro­methane­sulfonate with isonicotinamide in aceto­nitrile produces a polymeric structure held together by discrete hydrogen bonds, regium bonds between the metal atom and the solvent mol­ecules, and metal–metal inter­actions.

The central Ag^I atom of the title salt, [Ag(INAM)₂](CF₃SO₃)·2CH₃CN, where INAM is isonicotinamide (C₆H₆N₂O), is twofold coordinated by the pyridine N atoms of two isonicotinamide ligands creating a slightly distorted linear mol­ecular geometry. The formation of polymeric chains {[Ag(INAM)₂]⁺}_n, held together by discrete hydrogen bonds through the amide group of the INAM ligand leaves voids for non-coordinating aceto­nitrile mol­ecules that inter­act the silver metal center via regium bonds.

A Computational Study of Metallacycles Formed by Pyrazolate Ligands and the Coinage Metals M = Cu(I), Ag(I) and Au(I): (pzM)n for n = 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6. Comparison with Structures Reported in the Cambridge Crystallographic Data Center (CCDC)

The structures reported in the Cambridge Structural Database (CSD) for neutral metallacycles formed by coinage metals in their valence (I) (cations) and pyrazolate anions were examined. Depending on the metal, dimers and trimers are the most common but some larger rings have also been reported, although some of the larger structures are not devoid of ambiguity. M06-2x calculations were carried out on simplified structures (without C-substituents on the pyrazolate rings) in order to facilitate a comparison with the reported X-ray structures (geometries and energies). The problems of stability of the different ring sizes were also analyzed.

Dinuclear Silver(I) Nitrate Complexes with Bridging Bisphosphinomethanes: Argentophilicity and Luminescence

Two silver nitrate complexes with bisphosphines were obtained and characterized: [Ag(dcypm)]2(NO3)2 (1; dcypm = bis(dicyclohexylphosphino)methane) and [Ag(dppm)]2(Me2PzH)n(NO3)2 (n = 1, 2a; n = 2, 2b; dppm = bis(diphenylphosphino)methane, Me2PzH = 3,5-dimethylpyrazole). The steric repulsions of bulky cyclohexyl substituents prevent additional ligand coordination to the silver atoms in 1. Compounds obtained feature the bimetallic eight-member cyclic core [AgPCP]2. The intramolecular argenthophilic interaction (d(Ag···Ag) = 2.981 Å) was observed in complex 1. In contrast, the coordination of pyrazole led to the elongation of Ag···Ag distance to 3.218(1) Å in 2a and 3.520 Å in 2b. Complexes 1 and 2a possess phosphorescence both in the solution and solid state. Time-dependent density-functional theory (TD-DFT) calculations demonstrate the origin of their different emission profile. In the case of 1, upon excitation, the electron leaves the Ag–P bonding orbital and locates on the intramolecular Ag···Ag bond (metal-centered character). Complex 2a at room temperature exhibits a phosphorescence originating from the 3(M + LP+N)LPhCT state. At 77 K, the photoluminescence spectrum of complex 2a shows two bands of two different characters: 3(M + LP+N)LPhCT and 3LCPh transitions. The contribution of Ag atoms to the excited state in both complexes 2a and 2b decreased relative to 1 in agreement with the structural changes caused by pyrazole coordination.

Synthesis, structures and luminescence of multinuclear silver(i) pyrazolate adducts with 1,10-phenanthroline derivatives

A set of silver(i) 3,5-bis(trifluoromethyl) pyrazolate adducts with 1,10-phenanthroline (L²), 2,9-dimethyl-1,10-phenanthroline (neocuproine, L³) and 2,9-dimethyl-4,7-diphenyl-1,10-phenanthroline (bathocuproine, L⁴) was synthesized starting from trimeric silver pyrazolate Ag₃Pz₃. Reactions with sterically hindered L³ and L⁴ cause the destruction of the original trimeric core, yielding a dinuclear Ag₂Pz₂ cycle with an unprecedented chair configuration for L³, while bathocuproine L⁴ leads to the drastic rearrangement of the silver pyrazolate core into cationic Ag(L⁴)₂ and anionic Ag₅Pz₆ subunits. All complexes obtained exhibit phosphorescence in the solid state. Time-dependent density functional theory calculations demonstrate their different possible emission processes, explaining their emission behavior as well as their lifetimes.

Solvent effects on acid-base complexes. What is more important: A macroscopic reaction field or solute-solvent interactions?

Can the geometry of an acid-base complex in solution be reproduced in calculations using an implicit accounting for the solvent effect in the form of a macroscopic reaction field? The answer is, "Yes, it can." Is this field equal to the real electric field experienced by the complex in solution? The answer is, "No, it is not." How can the geometry be correct under wrong conditions? This question is answered using density functional theory modeling of geometric and NMR parameters of pyridine⋯HF⋯(HCF₃)_n adducts in the absence and presence of an external electric field. This adduct under field approach shows that the N⋯H distance is a function of the H-F distance whatever method is used to change the geometry of the latter. An explicit account for solute-solvent interactions is required to get a realistic value of the solvent reaction field. Besides that, this approach reveals how certain NMR parameters depend on the solvent reaction field, the solute-solvent interactions, and the geometry of the N⋯H-F hydrogen bond. For some of them, the obtained dependences are far from self-evident.
