Abstract
Ferrocene is popular within the field of molecular electronics due to its well-defined electronic properties. However, where the conductance of highly-conjugated oligophenylethylenes has been widely studied, work on analogous ferrocenyl systems has been relatively rare, possibly due to difficulties associated with the synthesis of molecules containing terminal thioacetates, which are often used to bind molecules to metallic electrodes. Herein, a widely applicable synthetic methodology is demonstrated which can be used to synthesize a variety of conjugated ferrocene-alkyne systems terminated with thioacetates, including symmetric, asymmetric and multi-ferrocene systems. Conjugation of the ferrocene units to their terminal atoms is then shown through the use of both UV/Vis spectroscopy and cyclic voltammetry. This work paves the way for future studies and applications of conjugated ferrocene systems in the field of nanoelectronics.

Abstract
A scalable access to functionalized ferrocenyl azides has been realized in flow. By halogen-lithium exchange of ferrocenyl halides and trapping with tosyl azide, a variety of functionalized ferrocenyl azides were obtained in high yields. To allow a scalable preparation of these potentially explosive compounds, a flow protocol was developed accelerating the reaction time to minutes and circumventing accumulation of potentially hazardous intermediates. The corresponding ferrocenyl amines were then prepared by a reliable reduction process.

Abstract
We present a series of tripodal ligands L1-3, which fold into hemicages C1-3 by using coordination-driven dynamic combinational chemistry. The identities of these hemicages were characterized using 1H NMR, 1H-1H COSY, DOSY, and ESI-TWIM-MS. Free rotation of the ferrocene structural units in the ligands affords an adaptable directionality, which is essential for the construction of these hemicages. Encapsulation of adamantane by C2 indicates the presence of a well-defined inner cavity as the binding pocket.

Abstract
Design of rotatory molecular switches based on extremely stable sandwich organometallic complexes ferrocene and bis(dicarbollide) complexes of transition metals is reviewed. The "on"-"off" switching in these systems can be controlled by various external stimuli such as change of the solution pH, interactions with coordinating species or redox reactions involving the central atom or substituents in the ligands.

Abstract
Cyclic multiredox centered systems are currently of great interest, with new compounds being reported and developments made in understanding their behavior. Efficient, elegant, and high‐yielding (for macrocyclic species) synthetic routes to two novel alkynyl‐conjugated multiple ferrocene‐ and biferrocene‐containing cyclic compounds are presented. The electronic interactions between the individual ferrocene units have been investigated through electrochemistry, spectroelectrochemistry, density functional theory (DFT), and crystallography to understand the effect of cyclization on the electronic properties and structure.

Abstract
Ferrocene is chemically robust and readily functionalized which enables its facile incorporation into more complex molecular systems. This coupled with ferrocene's reversible redox properties and ability to function as a “molecular ball bearing” has led to the use of ferrocene as a component in wide range of non-interlocked synthetic molecular machine systems.

Abstract
The ability to modify the structure of nanoscopic assemblies in a controlled fashion is an important prerequisite for the creation of functional supramolecular systems. Here, we describe a heterometallic Pt2Cu2-macrocycle which behaves as a molecular hinge. A square-planar Pt(ii) complex with pendent 2-formylpyridine groups was synthesized and structurally characterized. Condensation of the complex with benzylamine followed by reaction with Cu(MeCN)4BF4 resulted in the formation of a rectangular Pt2Cu2-macrocycle. Upon chemical oxidation of the Cu centers, the macrocycle folds up to adopt a butterfly-like geometry in which the Pt centers approach each other. This process can be reversed by chemical reduction.

Abstract
Mono-((Z)-2-amino-3-((E)-ferrocenylideneamino)butenedinitrile) (1) and bis-((E)-2,3-bis-((E)-ferrocenylideneamino)butenedinitrile) (2) substituted Schiff bases obtained by the reaction between ferrocenecarbaldehyde and diaminomaleonitrile were prepared and characterized by 1H and 13C NMR, IR, and UV-vis-NIR spectroscopy methods, elemental analysis, and X-ray crystallography. Density functional theory and time-dependent density functional theory were used to elucidate the electronic structure and the origin of observed excited states in both compounds. Electrochemical techniques were employed to investigate the possibility for the formation of a mixed-valence state of the iron centers in 2+, which are connected by a conjugated π-system. Two reversible oxidation potentials were observed in cyclic voltammetry, and spectroelectrochemical experiments revealed the presence of a low-energy intervalence charge transfer band in 2+, corresponding to class II of the mixed-valence systems. Both complexes were tested for cation-recognition properties using a variety of main group and transition-metal cations. It was shown that complex 1 can be used as a selective optical sensor in recognition of Hg2+ ions. It was also shown by NMR spectroscopy and X-ray crystallography that one of the final reaction products between Hg2+ ions and complex 1 is 2-ferrocenyl-4,5-dicyanoimidazole (3).

Abstract
Two 5-ferrocenyl-2,2′-bipyridine ligands were synthesised using the palladium(0) catalysed Suzuki–Miyaura cross-coupling reaction. Palladium(ii) and copper(i) complexes of these ligands were synthesised and the optical and electrochemical properties of the complexes were compared to those of the “free” ligands.

Abstract
A much improved route to 1,1′-bis(arylethynyl)ferrocenes comprising accessible thiolates on the aryl ring is reported. Unanticipated reactions between AcCl, TBAF–BBr3 and ferrocenyl-alkynes are also discussed, offering a rationale for previous synthetic difficulties.
