Abstract
Porphyrin dyes with strong push-pull type intramolecular charge transfer (ICT) character and broad absorption across the visible spectrum are reported. This combination of properties has been achieved by functionalizing the periphery of hypervalent and highly electron-deficient phosphorus(V) and antimony(V) centered porphyrins with electron-rich triphenylamine (TPA) groups. As a result of the large difference in electronegativity between the porphyrin ring and the peripheral groups, their absorption profiles show several strong charge transfer transitions, which in addition to the porphyrin-centered π → π* transitions, make them panchromatic black dyes with high absorption coefficients between 200 and 800 nm. Time-resolved optical and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) studies show that the lowest triplet state also has ICT character and is populated by spin-orbit coupled intersystem crossing.

Abstract
Tandem Diels-Alder reactions of masked porphyrindienes (i.e., sulfolenoporphyrins) with benzoquinones and stilbenes, followed by aromatization, have been developed to load porphyrin with mixed annulation units (i.e., terphenyl and naphthoquinone), furnishing the low-symmetry π-extended porphyrins (DxAy) with push-pull skeletons. All low-symmetrical chromophores display panchromatic absorption spectra, which look like a spectral combination of symmetrical congeners (D4/A4) in a certain ratio. Among them, tD2A2 with trans-arrangement of push/pull units possesses the largest maximum centered at 766 nm with the onset around 900 nm. The fusion of the electron-deficient naphthoquinone moiety on the porphyrin core results in the approximately quantitative regulation of the Eox1 and HOMOs (i.e., 0.10-0.13 V increase for the Eox1 and 0.14-0.16 eV decrease for the HOMOs per naphthoquinone unit). In brief, this work provides a new way to construct low-symmetry π-extended porphyrins with tunable properties resorting to the ratios and locations of the annulated push-pull units.

Abstract
A series of "push-pull" porphyrins, MTPP(MN)(TPA)2 (M = 2H, CuII, NiII, and ZnII), having triphenylamine (TPA) and dicyanovinyl (DCN) groups at antipodal positions were synthesized and characterised by UV-Vis, fluorescence and NMR spectroscopic techniques, MALDI-TOF mass spectrometry, cyclic voltammetry, DFT, and elemental analysis, which were then further utilized for third-order nonlinear optical measurements under mild conditions using femtosecond laser pulses. Remarkably, MTPP(MN)(TPA)2 (M = 2H, CuII, NiII, and ZnII) exhibited 21-48 nm and 38-80 nm bathochromic shifts in B and Qx(0,0) bands as compared to the corresponding MTPPs (M = 2H, CuII, NiII, and ZnII); the results are consistent with the effect of enhanced resonance due to TPA and -I effect of DCN moieties. In cyclic voltammetry, the push-pull porphyrins exhibited a cathodic shift (0.13-0.51 V) in their first oxidation potential as compared to the precursor owing to the presence of electron-donating TPA groups. The third-order nonlinear optical responses were recorded using a single-beam femtosecond Z-scan technique to retrieve information about the nonlinear absorption and nonlinear refraction of the samples. The two-photon absorption coefficients (β) are in the range of 0.87 × 10-13 to 4.28 × 10-13 m W-1 and the nonlinear refractive index (n2) in the range of 1.21 × 10-19 to 7.36 × 10-19 m2 W-1. The ultrafast absorption dynamics of the ground-state bleaching (GSB) and photo-induced absorption (PIA) are monitored by femtosecond broadband transient absorption studies. The strong nonlinearity of these push-pull porphyrins makes them potential candidates for nonlinear optical and photonic device applications.

Abstract
Differently functionalized porphyrin linkers represent the key compounds for the syntheses of new porphyrin-based metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), which have gathered great interest within the last two decades. Herein we report the synthesis of a large range of 5,15-bis(4-ethoxycarbonylphenyl)porphyrin derivatives, through Suzuki and Sonogashira cross-coupling reactions of an easily accessible corresponding meso-dibrominated trans-A2 B2 -porphyrin with commercially available boronic acids or terminal alkynes. The resulting porphyrins were fully characterized through NMR, MS, and IR spectroscopy and systematically investigated through UV/Vis absorption. Finally, selected structures were saponified to the corresponding carboxylic acids and subsequently proven to be suitable for the synthesis of surface-anchored MOF thin films.

Abstract
The nucleophilic substitution of aromatic moieties (SNAr) has been known for over 150 years and found wide use for the functionalization of (hetero)aromatic systems. Currently, several "types" of SNAr reactions have been established and notably the area of porphyrinoid macrocycles has seen many uses thereof. Herein, we detail the SNAr reactions of seven types of porphyrinoids with differing number and type of pyrrole units: subporphyrins, norcorroles, corroles, porphyrins, azuliporphyrins, N-confused porphyrins, and phthalocyanines. For each we analyze the substitution dependent upon: a) the type of nucleophile and b) the site of substitution (α, β, or meso). Along with this we evaluate this route as a synthetic strategy for the generation of unsymmetrical porphyrinoids. Distinct trends can be identified for each type of porphyrinoid discussed, regardless of nucleophile. The use of nucleophilic substitution on porphyrinoids is found to often be a cost-effective procedure with the ability to yield complex substituent patterns, which can be conducted in non-anhydrous solvents with easily accessible simple porphyrinoids.

Abstract
Individual chemical motifs are known to introduce structural distortions to the porphyrin macrocycle, be it in the core or at the periphery of the macrocycle. The interplay when introducing two or more of these known structural motifs has been scarcely explored and is not necessarily simply additive; these structural distortions have a chance to compound or negate to introduce new structural types. To this end, a series of compounds with complementary peripheral (5,15-disubstitution) and core (acidification) substitution patterns were investigated. The single-crystal X-ray structures of 18 5,15-diphenylporphyrin, 5,15-diphenylporphyrindi-ium diacid, and related compounds are reported, including the first example of a 5,15-dialkylporphyrindi-ium. Normal-coordinate structural decomposition (NSD) analysis is used for a detailed analysis of the conformation of the porphyrin subunit within the crystal structures. An elongation of porphyrin macrocycles along the C5,C15- axis (B2g symmetry) is observed in all of the free base porphyrins and porphyrin dications; distance across the core is around 0.3 Å in the free base and diacid compounds, and more than doubled in 5,15-dipentylporphyrin and 5,15-dipentylporphyrindi-ium diacid. While the free base porphyrins are largely planar, a large out-of-plane distortion can be observed in 5,15-diphenylporphyrin diacids, with the expected “projective saddle” shape characteristic for such systems. The combination of these two distortions (B2u and B2g) from regular porphyrin structure results in a macrocycle best characterized in the chiral point-group D2. A rare structural type of a cis-hydrogen bond chelate is observed for 5,15-dipentylporphyrindi-ium diacid, which adopts an achiral C2v symmetry. Crystallographic data indicate that the protonated porphyrin core forms hydrogen bonding chelates (N-H⋯X⋯H-N) to counter-anions. Weaker interactions, such as induced intramolecular C-H⋯O interactions from the porphyrin periphery are described, with distances characteristic of charge-assisted interactions. This paper offers a conceptual framework for accessing porphyrin macrocycles with designable distortion and symmetry, useful for the selective perturbation of electronic states and a design-for-application approach to solid state porphyrin materials.

Abstract
Optical absorption and emission, electrochemical, and photochemical properties of peripherally functionalized with flexible and rigid [Formula: see text]-extended substituents on A2 and A2B2 type zinc porphyrins is investigated. The significance of rigid [Formula: see text]-substituents over flexible ones in governing the spectral properties is unraveled. Flexible [Formula: see text]-substituents on the porphyrin ring caused appreciable spectral broadening compared to porphyrin carrying rigid [Formula: see text]-substituents. Further, supramolecular dyads are formed by coordinating phenyl imidazole functionalized fullerene, C[Formula: see text]Im. The calculated binding constants for the 1:1 complexes is in the order of 2–7 × 105 M[Formula: see text] suggesting stable complex formation. Free-energy calculations performed according to the Rehm–Weller approach suggested possibility of excited state electron transfer in these dyads. Femtosecond transient absorption studies of the dyads performed in [Formula: see text]-dichlorobenzene showed evidence of occurrence of electron transfer from the singlet-excited state that was in competition with the intersystem crossing process to populate the triplet-excited state of porphyrins.

Abstract
Two new families of "push-pull" tetraphenylporphyrins with one acetylacetone (acac) or ethyl acetate (EA) moiety at a β-pyrrole position of the macrocycle and two Br or Ph substituents at the antipodal β-positions were synthesized and structurally, spectroscopically, and electrochemically characterized. The examined porphyrins are represented as MTPP(R)2acac and MTPP(R)2EA (where R = Br or Ph and M = H2, Co, Ni, Cu, or Zn). NiTPP(Br)2acac exhibits an extremely nonplanar conformation (Δ24 = 0.44 Å, ΔCβ = 0.82 Å), while H2TPP(Br)2EA and ZnTPP(Ph)2EA exhibit a quasi-planar conformation. All of the synthesized acac-appended porphyrins show a keto-enol tautomerism in solution, which results in formation of hydrogen bonded dimers as evidenced by 1H NMR and mass spectrometry. Dimers were also detected under the electrochemical conditions for the dibromo derivatives but not the diphenyl substituted porphyrins. A facile stepwise and reversible electrogeneration of the electronically communicating porphyrin dimers is observed for MTPP(Br)2acac where M = CuII, NiII, or ZnII.

Abstract
Excited state dynamics, particularly intersystem crossing, of a set of meso-substituted porphyrins bearing different electron–donor and acceptor groups was studied by pulse train fluorescence technique. Triplet quantum yield was found to be critically dependent on the nature of meso-substituents in the porphyrin system. Porphyrins with meso methoxyphenyl groups were found to show high triplet quantum yields ([Formula: see text] between 0.70 and 0.81). Moreover, the quantity of methoxyphenyl groups and the substitution pattern directly influence [Formula: see text]. Alternatively, porphyrins attached to nitrophenyl group possess low triplet quantum yield values (~0.3). The observed structure-properties relationships suggest new ways for tuning the optical properties of porphyrins via chemical modification.

Abstract
A new efficient and mild protocol for synthesizing a series of trans-A2B2-porphyrins through a TFA-catalyzed condensation reaction between various aldehydes and dipyrromethanes has been developed. Several trans-A2B2-metalloporphyrins (cobalt, nickel) were synthesized and used to catalyze cyclohexane oxidation C–H bonds with dioxygen in the absence of additives and solvents. The results show that the catalytic activities were relative to the nature of the substituted groups and the central metal ions of trans-A2B2-metalloporphyrin. Cobalt metalloporphyrin presents better catalytic performance in the conversion of cyclohexane than the nickel metalloporphyrin under the same reaction conditions.

Abstract
We show that peripheral nitro groups enhance the maximum two-photon absorption cross-section of trans-A(2)B(2)-porphyrins bearing two phenylethynyl substituents by more than one order of magnitude. Maximum values as high as 1000 GM result from realization of suitable conditions for effective resonance enhancement along with a lowering of the energy and intensification of the two-photon allowed transitions in the Soret region.
