Single-Atom Alloy Pd1Ag10/CeO2–ZrO2 as a Promising Catalyst for Selective Alkyne Hydrogenation

The effect of support on the performance of Pd1Ag10/Al2O3 and Pd1Ag10/CeO2–ZrO2 catalysts in the selective hydrogenation of diphenylacetylene (DPA) was studied. Characterization of the catalyst by DRIFTS-CO and HRTEM revealed the formation of a PdAg single-atom alloy (SAA) structure on the surface of PdAg nanoparticles, with Pd1 sites isolated by Ag atoms. It was found that the use of CeO2–ZrO2 as a carrier makes it possible to increase the activity of the Pd1Ag10 catalyst by a factor of three without loss of selectivity compared to the reference Pd1Ag10/Al2O3. According to the HRTEM data, this catalytic behavior can be explained by an increase in the dispersion of Pd1Ag10/CeO2–ZrO2 compared to its Pd1Ag10/Al2O3 counterpart. As evidenced by DRIFTS-CO data, the high selectivity of the Pd1Ag10/CeO2–ZrO2 sample presumably stems from the stability of the structure of isolated Pd1 sites on the surface of SAA Pd1Ag10/CeO2–ZrO2.

Highly Active Bimetallic Single-Atom Alloy PdAg Catalysts on Cerium-Containing Supports in the Hydrogenation of Alkynes to Alkenes

Abstract

A study of a series of single-atom-alloy catalysts Pd1Ag3/Al2O3, Pd1Ag3/CeO2–Al2O3, and Pd1Ag3/CeO2–ZrO2 in the selective hydrogenation of diphenylacetylene (DPA) showed a significant (five-fold) increase in activity for the PdAg3/CeO2–ZrO2 sample in comparison with that of Pd1Ag3/Al2O3. It was especially noted that the increase in activity was not accompanied by a decrease in the selectivity for the target product. This catalytic behavior can be explained by two factors: (1) a more than twofold increase in the dispersity of the PdAg3/CeO2–ZrO2 catalyst and (2) a change in the electronic state of the nanoparticles, as determined from the results of an IR-spectroscopic study of adsorbed CO. The retention of the high selectivity of the synthesized catalysts indicated the stability of the structure of Pd1 monoatomic sites in the catalysts prepared by deposition on Ce-containing supports, which was also confirmed by the IR spectroscopy of adsorbed CO. The experimental results indicate that Ce-containing supports are promising for the synthesis of catalysts for the selective hydrogenation of substituted alkynes.

Identification of Potential Insect Growth Inhibitor against Aedes aegypti: A Bioinformatics Approach

Aedes aegypti is the main vector that transmits viral diseases such as dengue, hemorrhagic dengue, urban yellow fever, zika, and chikungunya. Worldwide, many cases of dengue have been reported in recent years, showing significant growth. The best way to manage diseases transmitted by Aedes aegypti is to control the vector with insecticides, which have already been shown to be toxic to humans; moreover, insects have developed resistance. Thus, the development of new insecticides is considered an emergency. One way to achieve this goal is to apply computational methods based on ligands and target information. In this study, sixteen compounds with acceptable insecticidal activities, with 100% larvicidal activity at low concentrations (2.0 to 0.001 mg·L−1), were selected from the literature. These compounds were used to build up and validate pharmacophore models. Pharmacophore model 6 (AUC = 0.78; BEDROC = 0.6) was used to filter 4793 compounds from the subset of lead-like compounds from the ZINC database; 4142 compounds (dG < 0 kcal/mol) were then aligned to the active site of the juvenile hormone receptor Aedes aegypti (PDB: 5V13), 2240 compounds (LE < −0.40 kcal/mol) were prioritized for molecular docking from the construction of a chitin deacetylase model of Aedes aegypti by the homology modeling of the Bombyx mori species (PDB: 5ZNT), which aligned 1959 compounds (dG < 0 kcal/mol), and 20 compounds (LE < −0.4 kcal/mol) were predicted for pharmacokinetic and toxicological prediction in silico (Preadmet, SwissADMET, and eMolTox programs). Finally, the theoretical routes of compounds M01, M02, M03, M04, and M05 were proposed. Compounds M01−M05 were selected, showing significant differences in pharmacokinetic and toxicological parameters in relation to positive controls and interaction with catalytic residues among key protein sites reported in the literature. For this reason, the molecules investigated here are dual inhibitors of the enzymes chitin synthase and juvenile hormonal protein from insects and humans, characterizing them as potential insecticides against the Aedes aegypti mosquito.

Applications of catalysis in hydroboration of imines, nitriles, and carbodiimides

The catalytic hydroboration of imines, nitriles, and carbodiimides is a powerful method of preparing amines which are key synthetic intermediates in the synthesis of many value-added products. Imine hydroboration has perennially featured in notable reports while nitrile and carbodiimide hydroboration have gained attention recently. Initial developments in catalytic hydroboration of imines and nitriles employed precious metals and typically required harsh reaction conditions. More recent advances have shifted toward the use of base metal and main group element catalysis and milder reaction conditions. In this survey, we review metal and nonmetal catalyzed hydroboration of these unsaturated organic molecules and group them into three distinct categories: precious metals, base metals, and main group catalysts. The TON and TOF of imine hydroboration catalysts are reported and summarized with a brief overview of recent advances in the field. Mechanistic and kinetic studies of some of these protocols are also presented.

Liquid-Phase Hydrogenation of Benzaldehyde on Low-Percentage Pt-Containing Catalysts under Mild Conditions

Abstract

The reaction of the liquid-phase hydrogenation of benzaldehyde is studied in two modes: at room temperature and atmospheric pressure, and at a temperature of 70°С and a pressure of 0.5 MPa on Pt/CeO2–ZrО2 catalysts with metal contents of 1 to 0.025 wt %. A 96% conversion of benzaldehyde is obtained on 1% Pt/CeO2–ZrО2 catalysts at room temperature, while a 97% conversion is obtained on 0.1% Pt/CeO2–ZrО2 catalysts at elevated temperatures. The selectivity of the formation of benzyl alcohol is in all cases 100%.

Unusual behavior of bimetallic nanoparticles in catalytic processes of hydrogenation and selective oxidation

Recent results obtained in studying mono- and bimetallic catalysts for selective hydrogenation of unsaturated carbonyl compounds, even unsaturated ones, acetylenic and nitro compounds as well as CO and bio-available alcohols oxidation are reviewed from the standpoint of the strong interaction between the metal nanoparticles, on the one hand, and two metals in the composition of bimetallic nanoparticles, on the other hand. Such interactions were demonstrated to result in partial positive or negative charging of metal nanoparticles, which, in turn, changes their adsorption and catalytic properties, especially with respect to the reactions involving hydrogen. Among the systems studied, Au–Pt, Au–Pd, Au–Cu, Au–Fe, Pt–WO x , Fe–Pd, Fe–Pt, Fe–Cu nanoparticles prepared by the redox procedure are considered to be most perspective in diverse catalytic applications because of the proper combination of the particle size and the electronic state of the metals.

Heterogeneous iron-containing nanocatalysts – promising systems for selective hydrogenation and hydrogenolysis

Bimetallic catalytic systems Fe–Me (Pt, Pd, Cu) demonstrate synergy in the activity/selectivity pattern in reactions involving hydrogen: selective hydrogenation of CC bonds, NO₂ and carbonyl groups and hydrogenolysis of C–O bonds.
