The effects of preconceptions on directed forgetting - the example of e-learning

This study used the item-based legal forgetting paradigm to investigate the effects of preconception type and material type on directed forgetting, and further explored the effects of preconception on directed forgetting of specific and gist memories through 2 experiments using static textual images and selected dynamic videos as experimental material in a simulated online teaching environment. The results showed that positive preconceptions induced directed forgetting of specific memory, while negative preconceptions enhanced directed forgetting of gist memory only. At the same time, static materials showed a directional forgetting effect, while dynamic materials did not show a directional forgetting effect. Static materials improve individual learning more than dynamic materials.

Comparative Agent-Based Simulations on Levels of Multiplicity Using a Network Regression: A Mobile Dating Use-Case

We demonstrate the use of agent-based models to simulate the interactions of two mobile dating applications that possess divergent interaction features. We reproduce several expected outcomes when compared to extant literature. We also demonstrate the use of a standard social network analysis technique—the network regression, Multiple Regression Quadratic Assignment Procedure—in conducting a principled and interpretable comparison between the two models with strong results. This combined approach is novel and allows complex system modelers who utilize agent-based models to reduce their reliance on idealized network structures (small world, scale-free, erdos-renyi) when applying underlying network interactions to agent-based models that can often skew results and mislead from a full picture of system-level properties. This work serves as a proof-of-concept in the integration of classical social network analysis methods and contemporary agent-based modeling to compare software designs and to enhance the policy-generation process of online social networks.

Preference Versus Choice in Online Dating

This study explores factors that influence matches of online dating participants' stated preference for particular characteristics in a potential partner and compares these with the characteristics of the online daters actually contacted. The nature of online dating facilitates exploration of the differences between stated preference and actual choice by participants, as online daters willingly provide a range of demographics on their ideal partner. Using data from the Australian dating website RSVP, we analyze 219,013 contact decisions. We conduct a multivariate analysis using the number of matched variables between the participants' stated preference and the characteristics of the individuals contacted. We find that factors such as a person's age, their education level, and a more social personality all increase the number of factors they choose in a potential partner that match their original stated preference. Males (relative to females) appear to match fewer characteristics when contacting potential love interests. Conversely, age interaction effects demonstrate that males in their late 60's are increasingly more selective (than females) regarding who they contact. An understanding of how technology (the Internet) is impacting human mating patterns and the psychology behind the participants informs the wider social science of human behavior in large-scale decision settings.

Sequential priming measures of implicit social cognition: a meta-analysis of associations with behavior and explicit attitudes

In a comprehensive meta-analysis of 167 studies, the authors found that sequential priming tasks were significantly associated with behavioral measures (r = .28) and with explicit attitude measures (r = .20). Priming tasks continued to predict behavior after controlling for the effects of explicit attitudes. These results generalized across a variety of study domains and methodological variations. Within-study moderator analyses revealed that priming tasks have good specificity, only predicting behavior and explicit measures under theoretically expected conditions. Together, these results indicate that sequential priming-one of the earliest methods of investigating implicit social cognition--continues to be a valid tool for the psychological scientist.

Humor in Romantic Contexts: Do Men Participate and Women Evaluate?

Several lines of research illustrate that humor plays a pivotal role in relationship initiation. The current article applies sexual selection theory to argue that humor production is a fitness indicator, allowing men to transmit information tacitly about their underlying qualities. And whereas prior research has emphasized women’s appreciation of humor as a signal of interest, the focus here is on how women evaluate prospective suitors’ humorous offerings. Two studies, including an ecologically valid study of online dating advertisements, provided evidence for men’s production and women’s evaluation of humor in romantic contexts. A third study revealed that women’s evaluations of potential mates’ humor are predictive of their romantic interest. Moreover, this article shows that preferences for and perceptions of humor are associated with preferences for and perceptions of intelligence and warmth, consistent with the argument that one function of humor is as a fitness indicator that provides information about underlying mate quality.
