Mercury Films on Commercial Carbon Screen-Printed Devices for the Analysis of Heavy Metal Ions: a Critical Evaluation

Fabrication of Boron-Doped Diamond Film Electrode for Detecting Trace Lead Content in Drinking Water

This work aimed to fabricate a boron-doped diamond film electrode for detecting trace amounts of lead in drinking water so as to safeguard it for the public. Available detectors suffer from high costs and complex analytical processes, and commonly used electrodes for electrochemical detectors are subject to a short life, poor stability, and secondary pollution during usage. In this work, a boron-doped diamond (BDD) electrode was prepared on a porous titanium substrate, and the microstructure and electrochemical properties of the BDD electrode were systematically studied. Moreover, the stripping parameters were optimized to obtain a better signal response and determine the detection index. As a result, diamond particles were closely arranged on the surface of the BDD electrode with good phase quality. The electrode showed high electrochemical activity, specific surface area, and low charge transfer resistance, which can accelerate the stripping reaction process of Pb²⁺. The BDD electrode presented a low detection limit of 2.62 ppb for Pb²⁺ under an optimized parameter set with an enrichment time of 150 s and a scanning frequency of 50 Hz. The BDD electrode also has good anti-interference ability. The designed BDD electrode is expected to offer a reliable solution for the dilemma of the availability of metal electrodes and exhibits a good application prospect in the trace monitoring of Pb²⁺ content in drinking water.

Paper-Based Working Electrodes Coated with Mercury or Bismuth Films for Heavy Metals Determination

Paper-based carbon working electrodes were modified with mercury or bismuth films for the determination of trace metals in aqueous solutions. Both modification procedures were optimized in terms of selectivity and sensitivity for the determination of different heavy metals, aiming their simultaneous determination. Cd (II), Pb (II) and In (III) could be quantified with both films. However, Cu (II) could not be determined with bismuth films. The modification with mercury films led to the most sensitive method, with linear ranges between 0.1 and 10 µg/mL and limits of detection of 0.4, 0.1, 0.04 and 0.2 µg/mL for Cd (II), Pb (II), In (III) and Cu (II), respectively. Nevertheless, the bismuth film was a more sustainable alternative to mercury. Tap-water samples were analyzed for the determination of metals by standard addition methodology with good accuracy, by using a low-cost and easily disposable paper-based electrochemical platform. This system demonstrated its usefulness for monitoring heavy metals in water.

A modified fluorescein derivative with improved water-solubility for turn-on fluorescent determination of Hg2+ in aqueous and living cells

To improve the water-solubility of heavy-metal sensing materials, a modified fluorescein-based derivative, acryloyl fluorescein hydrazine (ACFH), was designed and developed by incorporating a non-hydrogen-bonding group into the conjugated molecule for weakening intermolecular hydrogen-bonding interactions. In neutral water environments, ACFH presented a fluorescence-enhancement performance at λ_max=512nm in the presence of Hg²⁺, which could be visualized by naked-eyes. Under the optimized conditions, the linear range of Hg²⁺ detection was 1.0-100×10^-9molL^-1 with a correlation coefficient of 0.9992 and a detection limit of 0.86×10^-9molL^-1. The recognition mechanism was confirmed to be a stable and irreversible 1:1 five-member ring complex between ACFH and Hg²⁺ with a coordination constant of 3.36×10⁹. ACFH would possess a potential application in detecting Hg²⁺ for biological assay with low cytotoxicity.

Penicillamine-modified sensor for the voltammetric determination of Cd(II) and Pb(II) ions in natural samples

A new penicillamine-GCE was developed based on the immobilization of d-penicillamine on aryl diazonium salt monolayers anchored to the glassy carbon electrode (GCE) surface and it was applied for the first time to the simultaneous determination of Cd(II) and Pb(II) ions by stripping voltammetric techniques. The detection and quantification limits at levels of µg L(-1) suggest that the penicillamine-GCE could be fully suitable for the determination of the considered ions in natural samples.
