Attaching Different Kinds of Proteinaceous Nanospheres to a Variety of Fabrics Using Ultrasound Radiation

Update of ultrasound-assembling fabrication and biomedical applications for heterogeneous polymer composites

As a power-driving approach, ultrasound irradiation is very appealing to the preparation or modification of new materials. In the review, we overviewed the latest development of ultrasound-mediated effects or reactions in polymer composites, and demonstrated its unique and powerful aspects on the polymerization or aggregation. The review generalized the different categories of heterogeneous polymer composites by defining the constituents, and described the shapes, sizes and basic properties of various purpose-specific or site-specific products. Importantly, the review paid more attention to the main biomedicine applications of heterogeneous polymer composites, such as drug or bioactive substance entrapment, delivery, release, imaging, and therapy, and emphasized many advantages of ultrasound-assembling approaches and heterogeneous polymer composites in biology and medicine fields. In addition, the review also indicated the prospective challenges of heterogeneous polymer composites both in ultrasound-assembling designs and in biomedical applications.

Nanotechnology solutions to restore antibiotic activity

This review focuses on the development of nanoparticle systems that enables to enhance and restore the antibiotic activity for drug-resistant organisms. New and more aggressive antibiotic resistant bacteria and parasites calls for the development of new therapeutic strategies to overcome the inefficiency of conventional antibiotics and bypass treatment limitations related to these pathologies. Nanostructured biomaterials, nanoparticles in particular, have unique physicochemical properties such as ultra-small and controllable size, large surface area to mass ratio, high reactivity, and functionalizable structure. These properties can be applied to facilitate the administration of antimicrobial drugs, thereby overcoming some of the limitations in traditional antimicrobial therapeutics. Here the current progress and challenges in synthesizing nanoparticle platforms for restoring activity of various antimicrobial drugs are reviewed with an emphasis on antibiotics. We also call attention to the need to unite the shared interest between nanoengineers and microbiologists in developing nanotechnology for the treatment of microbial diseases.

Sonochemical coating of textiles with hybrid ZnO/chitosan antimicrobial nanoparticles

Textiles are good substrates for growth of microorganisms especially under moisture and temperature conditions found in hospitals. Microbial shedding from the body occurs continuously at contact of the patient with textile materials used in medical practices, contributing to the occurrence of hospital acquired infections. Thus, the use of efficient antimicrobial textiles is necessary to prevent the transfer of pathogens and the infection incidence. In this work, hybrid antimicrobial coatings were generated on cotton fabrics by means of a one-step simultaneous sonochemical deposition of ZnO nanoparticles (NPs) and chitosan. The process was further optimized in terms of reagents concentration and processing time in order to improve the antibacterial properties of the fabric and ensure their biocompatibility. The highest antibacterial activity of the fabrics against two medically relevant bacterial species was achieved in a 30 min sonochemical coating process using 2 mM ZnO NPs suspension. When chitosan was simultaneously deposited with the same amount of ZnO, the obtained hybrid NPs coating displayed higher by 48 and 17% antibacterial activity against Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli, respectively. The presence of biopolymer also improved the durability of the antimicrobial effect of the coatings by 21% for Staphylococcus aureus and 40% for Escherichia coli, evaluated after applying multiple washing cycles at hospital laundering regimes. Finally, 87% biocompatibility improvement supported by fibroblast viability was observed for the hybrid ZnO/chitosan coating compared to the steady decrease of cells viability over one week in contact with the fabrics coated with ZnO alone.

Releasing dye encapsulated in proteinaceous microspheres on conductive fabrics by electric current

The current paper reports on the relase properties of conductive fabrics coated with proteinaceous microspheres containing a dye. The release of the dye was achieved by passing an electric current through the fabric. The conductivity of the polyester fibers resulted from nanosilver (Ag NPs) coated on the surface of these fibers. Both types of coatings (nanosilver coating and the coating of the proteinaceous microspheres) were performed using high-intensity ultrasonic waves. Two different types of dyes, hydrophilic RBBR (Remazol Brilliant Blue R) and hydrophobic ORO (Oil Red O), were encapsulated inside the microspheres (attached to the surface of polyester) and then released by applying an electric current. The Proteinaceous Microsphere (PM)-coated conductive fabrics could be used in medicine for drug release. The encapsulated dye can be replaced with a drug that could be released from the surface of fabrics by applying a low voltage.

Sonochemical coating of cotton and polyester fabrics with "antibacterial" BSA and casein spheres

A novel antibacterial coating for cotton and polyester fabrics has been developed by using drug-loaded proteinaceous microspheres made of bovine serum albumin and casein proteins. The microbubbles were created and anchored onto the fabrics (see figure) in a one-step reaction that lasts 3 min. The sonochemically produced "antibacterial fabrics" have been characterized. The efficiency of the sonochemical process in converting the native proteins into microspheres, encapsulating the drug, and coating the fabric has also been studied.
