Certainty in holistic thinking and responses to contradiction: Dialectical proverbs, counter-attitudinal change and ambivalence

The present research examined whether consideration of individuals' certainty in their holism can enhance the ability of this individual difference to predict how they respond to contradiction-relevant outcomes. Across four studies, participants first completed a standardized measure of holistic-analytic thinking. Then, they rated how certain they were in their responses to the holism scale or were experimentally induced to feel high or low certainty. Next, participants were exposed to dialectical proverbs (Study 1a and 1b), to a counter-attitudinal change induction (Study 2), or to a paradigm of attitudinal ambivalence (Study 3). Results revealed that participants with higher certainty in their holistic thinking exhibited higher preference for dialectical proverbs (Study 1a and 1b), changed their attitude less following a counter-attitudinal task (Study 2) and showed weaker correspondence between objective and subjective ambivalence (Study 3). Beyond examining new domains and discovering novel findings, the present work was designed to be the first to show moderation of previously identified effects in the domain of holistic thinking and responses to contradiction.

Psychosocial oral health-related quality of life impact: A systematic review

Background

Psychosocial wellbeing is an important determinant for patients' oral health‐related quality of life (OHRQoL). Psychosocial impact (PI), together with the dimensions Oral Function, Orofacial Pain and Orofacial Appearance, has been proposed to cover the different areas of OHRQoL.

Objective

The objective of the study was to collect further scientific support for the new four‐dimensional structure of OHRQoL. This study is one out of a series of four and focuses on the PI in patients with dental anxiety, oral cancer and periodontitis (PROSPERO registration number: CRD42017064033).

Methods

Five databases (Pubmed (Medline), EMBASE, Cochrane, CINAHL and PsycINFO) were electronically searched on 8 June 2017 and updated on 14 January 2019, to identify the studies that measure OHRQoL using the Oral Health Impact Profile (OHIP) for oral health conditions. In this review, studies were included if the mean/median domain scores from OHIP‐14 or OHIP‐49 were available for patients with dental anxiety, oral cancer or periodontitis. The score of the handicap domain from the OHIP was used to assess patients` PI. The handicap domain includes 6 items for OHIP‐49 with a domain score ranging from 0 to 24 and 2 items for OHIP‐14 with a domain score ranging from 0 to 8. For comparison between the 2 versions of the OHIP, the domain score of OHIP‐49 was conversed into a 0 to 8 metric. The domain scores of the included studies were then pooled, separately for each of the included dental disorders.

Results

A total of 2104 records were identified based on the search strategy. After screening of titles and abstracts, 1607 articles were reviewed in full text. Twenty‐three articles met the inclusion criteria for this review and were included in the study. The 23 articles contained 3884 patients, grouped in 30 patient populations and 42 patient samples. The pooled mean scores of PI for dental anxiety, oral cancer and periodontitis were 3.2, 1.9 and 0.8, respectively, on the 0 to 8 metric.

Conclusion

This review provides standardised information about the OHRQoL impact for three dental disorders as a model for the PI dimension. Dental anxiety tends to show the strongest effect on the PI dimension, while periodontitis tends to show the weakest effect on the PI dimension. Future studies need to confirm whether the reported differences in PI scores between the three dental disorders are statistically significant.

Factor structure and reliability of Persian version of hospital anxiety and depression scale in patients with breast cancer survivors

Introduction

Anxiety and depression are significant concerns in breast cancer patients, and it may remain for a long term after primary treatments. The hospital anxiety and depression scale (HADS) is widely used to measure depressive and anxiety symptoms in clinical practices. The purpose of this study was to assess the psychometric properties of the Persian version of this scale in Iranian breast cancer survivors.

Methods

A total of 305 patients with breast cancer, refered to Cancer Hospital in northen Iran and completed the primary treatments were enrolled in. All patients responded to a 14-item HADS. We performed confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) to examine the factor structure of HADS and the item-scale analysis in order to estimate the item reliability and consider the Cronbach’s alpha as a measure of internal consistency.

Results

With a threshold of ≥8, the prevalence of anxiety and depression symptoms (moderate/severe) was 78.9 and 66.9%, respectively. The Cronbach’s alpha coefficients for anxiety and depression were 0.81 and 0.78, respectively. The CFA confirmed the two-factor structure model for HADS, indicating a good fitting summary indexes (χ2/df = 2.83, NFI = 0.88, RFI = 0.82, IFI = 0.92, CFI = 0.92, and RMSEA = 0.078).

Conclusion

The CFA and item reliability analysis have indicated an excellent psychometric property of the Persian version of HADS to measure depressive and anxiety symptoms in breast cancer survivors. Thus, HADS is a useful screening tool to identify post-breast cancer anxiety and depressive disorders.

Theory of Mind Impairments in Youth at Clinical High Risk of Psychosis

OBJECTIVE

The normal maturational processes of theory of mind (ToM) capacity are ongoing during adolescence and even early adulthood. However, research has shown that ToM ability also declines among adults suffering from prodromal psychotic experiences. The goal of this study was to investigate the characteristics of ToM performance in youth with clinical high risk (CHR) of psychosis.

METHODS

The Reading Mind in Eyes Task (RMET), including own-race and other-race eyes, was administered to 40 CHR youth; 42 age-, gender-, and education-matched healthy controls (HCs); and 62 adult patients with schizophrenia (SZ). Nine-month follow-up data were collected from 31 CHR subjects, of whom 7 (22.6%) had made the transition to psychosis.

RESULTS

CHR youth showed significant impairment in RMET performance compared to HC youth but performed better than did SZ patients. Moreover, they were significantly slower than were HC youth in responding to the RMET, with a response time similar to that of SZ patients. In particular, they had significantly poorer accuracy in interpreting positive and neutral eye expressions compared to the HC group, but not in interpreting negative eye expressions. Preliminary follow-up data showed a trend toward significance (p = 0.079) for RMET performance between those who transitioned to psychosis and those who did not.

CONCLUSIONS

Our findings illustrate that deficits in ToM capacity, specifically the ability to interpret people's mental state from eye expressions, occur early on in prodromal psychosis in youth. Early interventions for CHR youth focusing on ToM enhancement may halt progress toward psychosis.
