A deep learning approach for classification of COVID and pneumonia using DenseNet-201

Advancing maxillofacial prosthodontics by using pre-trained convolutional neural networks: Image-based classification of the maxilla

PURPOSE

The study aimed to compare the performance of four pre-trained convolutional neural networks in recognizing seven distinct prosthodontic scenarios involving the maxilla, as a preliminary step in developing an artificial intelligence (AI)-powered prosthesis design system.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

Seven distinct classes, including cleft palate, dentulous maxillectomy, edentulous maxillectomy, reconstructed maxillectomy, completely dentulous, partially edentulous, and completely edentulous, were considered for recognition. Utilizing transfer learning and fine-tuned hyperparameters, four AI models (VGG16, Inception-ResNet-V2, DenseNet-201, and Xception) were employed. The dataset, consisting of 3541 preprocessed intraoral occlusal images, was divided into training, validation, and test sets. Model performance metrics encompassed accuracy, precision, recall, F1 score, area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUC), and confusion matrix.

RESULTS

VGG16, Inception-ResNet-V2, DenseNet-201, and Xception demonstrated comparable performance, with maximum test accuracies of 0.92, 0.90, 0.94, and 0.95, respectively. Xception and DenseNet-201 slightly outperformed the other models, particularly compared with InceptionResNet-V2. Precision, recall, and F1 scores exceeded 90% for most classes in Xception and DenseNet-201 and the average AUC values for all models ranged between 0.98 and 1.00.

CONCLUSIONS

While DenseNet-201 and Xception demonstrated superior performance, all models consistently achieved diagnostic accuracy exceeding 90%, highlighting their potential in dental image analysis. This AI application could help work assignments based on difficulty levels and enable the development of an automated diagnosis system at patient admission. It also facilitates prosthesis designing by integrating necessary prosthesis morphology, oral function, and treatment difficulty. Furthermore, it tackles dataset size challenges in model optimization, providing valuable insights for future research.

A novel deep learning technique for medical image analysis using improved optimizer

Application of Convolutional neural network in spectrum of Medical image analysis are providing benchmark outputs which converges the interest of many researchers to explore it in depth. Latest preprocessing technique Real ESRGAN (Enhanced super resolution generative adversarial network) and GFPGAN (Generative facial prior GAN) are proving their efficacy in providing high resolution dataset. Objective: Optimizer plays a vital role in upgrading the functioning of CNN model. Different optimizers like Gradient descent, Stochastic Gradient descent, Adagrad, Adadelta and Adam etc. are used for classification and segmentation of Medical image but they suffer from slow processing due to their large memory requirement. Stochastic Gradient descent suffers from high variance and is computationally expensive. Dead neuron problem also proves to detrimental to the performance of most of the optimizers. A new optimization technique Gradient Centralization is providing the unparalleled result in terms of generalization and execution time. Method: Our paper explores the next factor which is the employment of new optimization technique, Gradient centralization (GC) to our integrated framework (Model with advanced preprocessing technique). Result and conclusion: Integrated Framework of Real ESRGAN and GFPGAN with Gradient centralization provides an optimal solution for deep learning models in terms of Execution time and Loss factor improvement.

Explainable deep learning diagnostic system for prediction of lung disease from medical images

Around the globe, respiratory lung diseases pose a severe threat to human survival. Based on a central goal to reduce contiguous transmission from infected to healthy persons, several technologies have evolved for diagnosing lung pathologies. One of the emerging technologies is the utility of Artificial Intelligence (AI) based on computer vision for processing wide varieties of medical imaging but AI methods without explainability are often treated as a black box. Based on a view to demystifying the rationale influencing AI decisions, this paper designed and developed a novel low-cost explainable deep-learning diagnostic tool for predicting lung disease from medical images. For this, we investigated explainable deep learning (DL) models (conventional DL and vision transformers (ViTs)) for performing prediction of the existence of pneumonia, COVID19, or no-disease from both original and data augmentation (DA)-based medical images (from two chest X-ray datasets). The results show that our experimental consideration of the DA that combines the impact of cropping, rotation, and horizontal flipping (CROP+ROT+HF) for transforming input images and then passed as input to an Inception-V3 architecture yielded a performance that surpasses all the ViTs and other conventional DL approaches in most of the evaluated performance metrics. Overall, the results suggest that the utility of data augmentation schemes aided the DL methods to yield higher classification accuracies. Furthermore, we compared five different class activation mapping (CAM) algorithms (GradCAM, GradCAM++, EigenGradCAM, AblationCAM, and RandomCAM). The result shows that most of the examined CAM algorithms were effective in identifying the attention region containing the existence of pneumonia or COVID-19 from the medical images (chest X-rays). Our developed low-cost AI diagnostic tool (pilot system) can assist medical experts and radiographers in proffering early diagnosis of lung disease. For this, we selected five to seven deep learning models and the explainable algorithms were deployed on a novel web interface implemented via a Gradio framework.

SkinLesNet: Classification of Skin Lesions and Detection of Melanoma Cancer Using a Novel Multi-Layer Deep Convolutional Neural Network

Skin cancer is a widespread disease that typically develops on the skin due to frequent exposure to sunlight. Although cancer can appear on any part of the human body, skin cancer accounts for a significant proportion of all new cancer diagnoses worldwide. There are substantial obstacles to the precise diagnosis and classification of skin lesions because of morphological variety and indistinguishable characteristics across skin malignancies. Recently, deep learning models have been used in the field of image-based skin-lesion diagnosis and have demonstrated diagnostic efficiency on par with that of dermatologists. To increase classification efficiency and accuracy for skin lesions, a cutting-edge multi-layer deep convolutional neural network termed SkinLesNet was built in this study. The dataset used in this study was extracted from the PAD-UFES-20 dataset and was augmented. The PAD-UFES-20-Modified dataset includes three common forms of skin lesions: seborrheic keratosis, nevus, and melanoma. To comprehensively assess SkinLesNet's performance, its evaluation was expanded beyond the PAD-UFES-20-Modified dataset. Two additional datasets, HAM10000 and ISIC2017, were included, and SkinLesNet was compared to the widely used ResNet50 and VGG16 models. This broader evaluation confirmed SkinLesNet's effectiveness, as it consistently outperformed both benchmarks across all datasets.

Cloud-Based Quad Deep Ensemble Framework for the Detection of COVID-19 Omicron and Delta Variants

The mortality rates of patients contracting the Omicron and Delta variants of COVID-19 are very high, and COVID-19 is the worst variant of COVID. Hence, our objective is to detect COVID-19 Omicron and Delta variants from lung CT-scan images. We designed a unique ensemble model that combines the CNN architecture of a deep neural network-Capsule Network (CapsNet)-and pre-trained architectures, i.e., VGG-16, DenseNet-121, and Inception-v3, to produce a reliable and robust model for diagnosing Omicron and Delta variant data. Despite the solo model's remarkable accuracy, it can often be difficult to accept its results. The ensemble model, on the other hand, operates according to the scientific tenet of combining the majority votes of various models. The adoption of the transfer learning model in our work is to benefit from previously learned parameters and lower data-hunger architecture. Likewise, CapsNet performs consistently regardless of positional changes, size changes, and changes in the orientation of the input image. The proposed ensemble model produced an accuracy of 99.93%, an AUC of 0.999 and a precision of 99.9%. Finally, the framework is deployed in a local cloud web application so that the diagnosis of these particular variants can be accomplished remotely.

Using machine learning to identify patient characteristics to predict mortality of in-patients with COVID-19 in south Florida

Introduction

The SARS-CoV-2 (COVID-19) pandemic has created substantial health and economic burdens in the US and worldwide. As new variants continuously emerge, predicting critical clinical events in the context of relevant individual risks is a promising option for reducing the overall burden of COVID-19. This study aims to train an AI-driven decision support system that helps build a model to understand the most important features that predict the "mortality" of patients hospitalized with COVID-19.

Methods

We conducted a retrospective analysis of "5,371" patients hospitalized for COVID-19-related symptoms from the South Florida Memorial Health Care System between March 14th, 2020, and January 16th, 2021. A data set comprising patients' sociodemographic characteristics, pre-existing health information, and medication was analyzed. We trained Random Forest classifier to predict "mortality" for patients hospitalized with COVID-19.

Results

Based on the interpretability of the model, age emerged as the primary predictor of "mortality", followed by diarrhea, diabetes, hypertension, BMI, early stages of kidney disease, smoking status, sex, pneumonia, and race in descending order of importance. Notably, individuals aged over 65 years (referred to as "older adults"), males, Whites, Hispanics, and current smokers were identified as being at higher risk of death. Additionally, BMI, specifically in the overweight and obese categories, significantly predicted "mortality". These findings indicated that the model effectively learned from various categories, such as patients' sociodemographic characteristics, pre-hospital comorbidities, and medications, with a predominant focus on characterizing pre-hospital comorbidities. Consequently, the model demonstrated the ability to predict "mortality" with transparency and reliability.

Conclusion

AI can potentially provide healthcare workers with the ability to stratify patients and streamline optimal care solutions when time is of the essence and resources are limited. This work sets the platform for future work that forecasts patient responses to treatments at various levels of disease severity and assesses health disparities and patient conditions that promote improved health care in a broader context. This study contributed to one of the first predictive analyses applying AI/ML techniques to COVID-19 data using a vast sample from South Florida.

Classification of Monkeypox Images Using LIME-Enabled Investigation of Deep Convolutional Neural Network

In this research, we demonstrate a Deep Convolutional Neural Network-based classification model for the detection of monkeypox. Monkeypox can be difficult to diagnose clinically in its early stages since it resembles both chickenpox and measles in symptoms. The early diagnosis of monkeypox helps doctors cure it more quickly. Therefore, pre-trained models are frequently used in the diagnosis of monkeypox, because the manual analysis of a large number of images is labor-intensive and prone to inaccuracy. Therefore, finding the monkeypox virus requires an automated process. The large layer count of convolutional neural network (CNN) architectures enables them to successfully conceptualize the features on their own, thereby contributing to better performance in image classification. The scientific community has recently articulated significant attention in employing artificial intelligence (AI) to diagnose monkeypox from digital skin images due primarily to AI's success in COVID-19 identification. The VGG16, VGG19, ResNet50, ResNet101, DenseNet201, and AlexNet models were used in our proposed method to classify patients with monkeypox symptoms with other diseases of a similar kind (chickenpox, measles, and normal). The majority of images in our research are collected from publicly available datasets. This study suggests an adaptive k-means clustering image segmentation technique that delivers precise segmentation results with straightforward operation. Our preliminary computational findings reveal that the proposed model could accurately detect patients with monkeypox. The best overall accuracy achieved by ResNet101 is 94.25%, with an AUC of 98.59%. Additionally, we describe the categorization of our model utilizing feature extraction using Local Interpretable Model-Agnostic Explanations (LIME), which provides a more in-depth understanding of particular properties that distinguish the monkeypox virus.
