Progression from Nodular to Lymphangitic Subcutaneous Metastasis from Clear Cell Endometrial Carcinoma: Ct Findings

Subcutaneous metastases from clear cell endometrial carcinoma are an uncommon event and tumor implantations are rarely found with diagnostic imaging techniques. The nodular form is the most frequent type of subcutaneous metastasis from genital system tumors, even though plaque-like and infiltrative forms have also been reported. We report the first case of subcutaneous metastasis from clear cell endometrial carcinoma whose progression from the early nodular to the lymphangitic infiltrative form was studied with computed tomography (CT). Differential diagnostic problems are discussed.

Metastatic tumors of the umbilicus: a review 1830-1989

Umbilical metastases from known and unknown primary cancers are rare. The eponym "Sister Mary Joseph's nodule" has been used by generations of physicians. The first reports of this clinical sign were from Walshe in 1846. A review of the literature revealed 265 cases from then until 1989. Only 85 cases of umbilical metastasis from unknown primary tumors were found. This review should help us to focus on the common and uncommon primary sites in the diagnosis of patients with this finding. A single case report and the work-up for the hidden primary tumor are described.

Endometrial carcinoma presenting as a large inguinal mass

Patients with endometrial cancer usually present with vaginal bleeding. A case of endometrial cancer presenting as an asymptomatic, large, inguinal mass is reported. This unusual clinical picture and its management are discussed.

Sister Joseph's nodule: seven cases of umbilical metastases from gynecologic malignancies

Seven cases of patients with gynecologic cancer and Sister Joseph's nodule, umbilical metastases from intraabdominal malignancy, are presented, making a total of 44 such cases in the literature. One such case, uterine leiomyosarcoma with umbilical metastases, is the first such lesion reported. Although the prognosis is generally poor, a few long-term survivors have been reported, and aggressive therapy may be warranted, particularly in patients with ovarian malignancy.

Sister Mary Joseph's nodule: a clinical and histologic study

The clinical and histologic findings in eighty-five cases of tumors metastatic to the umbilicus were studied. Clinically, the lesions were seen as firm, indurated nodules, sometimes with fissuring or ulceration. In twelve cases, the initial presentation of the internal primary malignancy was an umbilical nodule. Histologic material from the metastatic umbilical tumor was studied in all cases but was diagnostic of the primary carcinoma in only twenty-one. In seventeen cases, the primary site was never reliably determined, while stomach, large bowel, ovary, and pancreas were the most frequent primary sites in the other cases. Most patients died within months after the appearance of the umbilical tumors, thus emphasizing the ominous significance of this sign of metastatic, usually intra-abdominal, malignant disease.
