The OH* + CH3SH reaction: support for an addition-elimination mechanism from ab initio calculations

Atmospheric reaction of methyl mercaptan with hydroxyl radical as an acid rain primary agent

For the CH₃SH + OH atmospheric reaction, we study the mechanism, potential energy surface, thermodynamic parameters of all stationary points, and rate of generation of the main product channels at high, low, and intermediate pressures. In this study, the UMP2, UM062X, UB3LYP, and CCSD(T) methods by Dunning and Pople basis sets are used and the results are compared with the experimental data. It is theoretically predicted that the reaction has fourteen possible pathways with eight different products in the gas phase. The thermodynamic results show that OH radical extracts predominantly the hydrogen of the SH functional group compared to the hydrogen of the CH₃ group of CH₃SH. Also, the rate constant calculations indicate that the extraction of the hydrogen atom of the SH group has a major role in 150–3000 K, while a good contribution is observed for the hydrogen of methyl group above 1200 K. Our results show that the used methods lead to good agreement with experiment. Finally, we demonstrated that why the main path is the main path.

OH-Radical Specific Addition to Glutathione S-Atom at the Air-Water Interface: Relevance to the Redox Balance of the Lung Epithelial Lining Fluid

Antioxidants in epithelial lining fluids (ELF) prevent inhaled air pollutants from reaching lung tissue. This process, however, may upset ELF's redox balance, which is deemed to be expressed by the ratio of the major antioxidant glutathione (GSH) to its putative oxidation product GSSG. Previously, we found that at physiological pH O3(g) rapidly oxidizes GS(2-)(aq) (but not GSH(-)) to GSO3(-) rather than GSSG. Here, we report that in moderately acidic pH ≤ 5 media ·OH(g) oxidizes GSH(-)(aq) to sulfenic GSOH(-), sulfinic GSO2(-), and sulfonic GSO3(-) acids via ·OH specific additions to reduced S-atoms. The remarkable specificity of ·OH on water versus its lack of selectivity in bulk water implicates an unprecedented steering process during [OH···GSH] interfacial encounters. Thus, both O3 and ·OH oxidize GSH to GSOH(-) under most conditions, and since GSOH(-) is reduced back to GSH in vivo by NADPH, redox balance may be in fact signaled by GSH/GSOH ratios.

Mechanism of Cysteine Oxidation by a Hydroxyl Radical: A Theoretical Study

Cysteine oxidation by HO(.) was studied at a high level of ab initio theory in both gas phase and aqueous solution. Potential energy surface scans in the gas phase performed for the model system methanethiol+HO(.) indicate that the reactants can form two intermediate states: a sulfur-oxygen adduct and a hydrogen bound reactant complex. However these states appear to play a minor role in the reaction mechanism as long as they are fast dissociating states. Thus the main reaction channel predicted at the QCISD(T)/6-311+G(2df,2pd) level of theory is the direct hydrogen atom abstraction. The reaction mechanism is not perturbed by solvation which was found to induce only small variations in the Gibbs free energy of different reactant configurations. The larger size reactant system cysteine+HO* was treated by the integrated molecular orbital+molecular orbital (IMOMO) hybrid method mixing the QCISD(T)/6-311+G(2df,2pd) and the UMP2/6-311+G(d,p) levels of theory. The calculated potential energy, enthalpy, and Gibbs free energy barriers are slightly different from those of methanethiol. The method gave a rate constant for cysteine oxidation in aqueous solution, k=2.4 x 10(9) mol(-1) dm(3) s(-1), which is in good agreement with the experimental rate constant. Further analysis showed that the reaction is not very sensitive to hydrogen bonding and electrical polarity of the molecular environment.
