Abstract
PURPOSE A relationship between decreased plantar cutaneous sensation and impaired balance function has been reported in patients with peripheral neuropathy and diabetes. This cross-sectional study aimed to investigate the relationship between plantar sensation and postural balance, as well as the association between plantar sensation and sarcopenia-related motor function in community-dwelling older adults. METHODS The participants included 1659 community-dwelling older adults with a mean age of 74 ± 5 years, of which 43% were male patients. Plantar cutaneous sensation thresholds were assessed using an automatic plantar sensation testing device. Postural balance was measured using one-leg standing (OLS) time. Grip strength, five-time sit-to-stand (STS) time, and normal gait speed were measured as components of muscle strength and physical function related to sarcopenia. The skeletal muscle mass index (SMI) and leg phase angle were obtained using bioelectrical impedance analysis. RESULTS Age, sex, body mass index, and leg phase angle, but not SMI and grip strength, were independently associated with the plantar sensation threshold. Plantar sensation threshold was independently associated with the OLS time (P = 0.001) and STS time (P = 0.001) after adjusting for potential confounders. No significant association was found between plantar sensation threshold and normal gait speed (P = 0.741). CONCLUSION Plantar sensation was independently associated with postural balance and lower limb function in community-dwelling older adults. The assessment of plantar sensation could be useful for identifying factors contributing to poor postural balance and lower limb motor function.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Sarcopenia, characterized by declining muscle mass and function, is a growing concern among India's aging population. This study investigates sarcopenia's prevalence and determinants using the nationally representative LASI dataset. METHODS This analysis included 26,780 community-dwelling adults aged 60 and above, with informed consent obtained from all participants. Sarcopenia was defined using the Asian Working Group for Sarcopenia (AWGS) 2019 criteria. Demographic, socioeconomic, health, and geriatric factors, including age, sex, living arrangements, economic status, comorbidities, and geriatric syndromes, were examined. Multinomial logistic regression was used to analyze associations with sarcopenia and severe sarcopenia, and results were expressed as relative risk ratios (RRR) with 95% confidence intervals (CI). RESULTS The prevalence of sarcopenia was 43.6% (n = 11,665), and 19.4% (n = 5202) had severe sarcopenia. Sociodemographic factors significantly associated with sarcopenia and severe sarcopenia included being widowed (RRR: 1.24, 95% CI: 1.12-1.37 for sarcopenia; RRR: 1.82, 95% CI: 1.64-2.03 for severe sarcopenia) or divorced (RRR: 1.68, 95% CI: 1.12-2.54 for severe sarcopenia). Additionally, a higher BMI and higher education level were associated with a lower risk of sarcopenia. Among comorbidities, joint and bone diseases were linked to both sarcopenia (RRR: 1.21, 95% CI: 1.07-1.35) and severe sarcopenia (RRR: 1.4, 95% CI: 1.23-1.58), while hypertension (RRR: 1.22, 95% CI: 1.1-1.36), chronic lung disease (RRR: 1.22, 95% CI: 1.02-1.44), and cerebrovascular accident (RRR: 1.5, 95% CI: 1.09-2.08) were specifically associated with severe sarcopenia. Geriatric syndromes such as tooth loss, impaired vision and hearing, history of falls, and depression were significantly associated with increased risk of sarcopenia. CONCLUSION This study reveals significant associations between sarcopenia and various sociodemographic factors, comorbidities, and geriatric syndromes in older adults in India, suggesting potential areas for targeted intervention. However, further longitudinal studies are needed to validate these findings and clarify the causal relationships of the observed associations.

Abstract
PURPOSE This study investigated the relationship between food group and the changes in sarcopenia parameters in 1 year among older outpatients. METHODS A prospective cohort study conducted between July 2017 and April 2021 included patients aged ≥ 65 years attending a frailty clinic. Food group consumption adjusted for energy and body weight was conducted using a self-administered dietary history questionnaire. Ordinal logistic regression analysis was used to examine the association between tertiles of adjusted food group consumption and outcomes, including a handgrip strength decline, prolonged five-time chair stand test (5CST), decreased skeletal muscle mass index (SMI), and decreased gait speed in 1 year. Covariates included age, sex, height, energy intake, number of comorbidities, and the Baecke activity score. RESULTS In the analysis of 165 participants (mean age 77.6 ± 6.1 years, 107 women), individuals with higher consumption of sugar and sweeteners had a significantly increased risk for handgrip strength decline (OR 2.46, 95% CI 1.15-5.23, P = 0.020) and prolonged 5CST (OR 3.14, 95% CI 1.38-7.13, P = 0.006). Higher consumption of beverages increased the risk of handgrip strength decline (OR 2.30, 95% CI 1.11-4.76, P = 0.025). Conversely, higher legume consumption decreased the risk of SMI reduction (OR 0.35, 95%CI 0.16-0.76, P = 0.008), higher fruit consumption reduced the risk of prolonged 5CST time (OR 0.29, 95% CI 0.13-0.67, P = 0.004), and higher green yellow vegetables consumption decreased the risk of reduced gait speed (OR 0.38, 95% CI 0.17-0.84, P = 0.017). CONCLUSION Sugar, sweeteners, and beverages are associated with worsened sarcopenia parameters, whereas consumption of legumes, vegetables, and fruits is associated with a lower risk.

Abstract
Frailty and delirium are two common geriatric syndromes sharing several clinical characteristics, risk factors, and negative outcomes. Understanding their interdependency is crucial to identify shared mechanisms and implement initiatives to reduce the associated burden. This literature review summarizes scientific evidence on the complex interplay between frailty and delirium; clinical, epidemiological, and pathophysiological commonalities; and current knowledge gaps. We conducted a PubMed systematic search in June 2023, which yielded 118 eligible articles out of 991. The synthesis of the results-carried out by content experts-highlights overlapping risk factors, clinical phenotypes, and outcomes and explores the influence of one syndrome on the onset of the other. Common pathophysiological mechanisms identified include inflammation, neurodegeneration, metabolic insufficiency, and vascular burden. The review suggests that frailty is a risk factor for delirium, with some support for delirium associated with accelerated frailty. The proposed unifying framework supports the integration and measurement of both constructs in research and clinical practice, identifying the geroscience approach as a potential avenue to develop strategies for both conditions. In conclusion, we suggest that frailty and delirium might be alternative-sometimes coexisting-manifestations of accelerated biological aging. Clinically, the concepts addressed in this review can help approach older adults with either frailty or delirium from a different perspective. From a research standpoint, longitudinal studies are needed to explore the hypothesis that specific pathways within the biology of aging may underlie the clinical manifestations of frailty and delirium. Such research will pave the way for future understanding of other geriatric syndromes as well.

Abstract
Loss of skeletal muscle strength and mass (sarcopenia) is common in older adults and associated with an increased risk of disability, frailty and premature death. Finding cost-effective prevention and treatment strategies for sarcopenia for the growing ageing population is therefore of great public health interest. Although nutrition is considered an important factor in the aetiology of sarcopenia, its potential for sarcopenia prevention and/or treatment is still being evaluated. Nutrition research for sarcopenia utilises three main approaches to understand muscle-nutrition relationships, evaluating: single nutrients, whole foods and whole diet effects - both alone or combined with exercise. Applying these approaches, we summarise recent evidence from qualitative and quantitative syntheses of findings from observational and intervention studies of healthy older adults, and those with sarcopenia. We consider protein supplements, whole foods (fruits and vegetables) and the Mediterranean diet as exemplars. There is some evidence of beneficial effects of protein supplementation ≥ 0·8 g/kg body weight/d on muscle mass when combined with exercise training in intervention studies of healthy and sarcopenic older adults. In contrast, evidence for effects on muscle function (strength and physical performance) is inconclusive. There is reasonably consistent epidemiological evidence suggesting benefits of higher fruits and vegetables consumption for better physical performance. Similarly, higher adherence to the Mediterranean diet is associated with beneficial effects on muscle function in observational studies. However, intervention studies are lacking. This review discusses how current evidence may inform the development of preventive and intervention strategies for optimal muscle ageing and nutritional public policy aimed at combatting sarcopenia.

Abstract
Objectives We aimed to evaluate the association between scores on each item of the SARC-F questionnaire and life expectancy in patients undergoing major surgery for urologic cancer. Methods This retrospective study included 1018 patients undergoing elective major urologic cancer surgery. All patients completed the SARC-F questionnaire preoperatively. Demographic and clinical data were collected. The primary endpoint was an association between SARC-F scores and overall survival (OS). Results Of the 1018 patients, the median age was 72 years and 920 (90%) were male. Multivariate analysis revealed four factors significantly and independently associated with shorter OS: assistance with walking score ≥1 (Hazard ratio: HR=2.18, P=0.044), cancer stages ≥ III (HR=7.98, P<0.001), high blood loss ≥78 ml or blood transfusion during surgery (HR=4.53, P=0.007 and HR=2.41, P=0.037, respectively). Conclusions This study found that among the items of the SARC-F questionnaire, assistance with walking was a strong predictor of life expectancy. Incorporating such a simple screening tool into the preoperative assessment would help to ensure more appropriate perioperative care for urologic cancer patients.

Abstract
Sarcopenia refers to age-related loss of muscle mass and function and is related to impaired somatic and brain health, including cognitive decline and Alzheimer's disease. However, the relationships between sarcopenia, brain structure and cognition are poorly understood. Here, we investigate the associations between sarcopenic traits, brain structure and cognitive performance. We included 33 709 UK Biobank participants (54.2% female; age range 44-82 years) with structural and diffusion magnetic resonance imaging, thigh muscle fat infiltration (n = 30 561) from whole-body magnetic resonance imaging (muscle quality indicator) and general cognitive performance as indicated by the first principal component of a principal component analysis across multiple cognitive tests (n = 22 530). Of these, 1703 participants qualified for probable sarcopenia based on low handgrip strength, and we assigned the remaining 32 006 participants to the non-sarcopenia group. We used multiple linear regression to test how sarcopenic traits (probable sarcopenia versus non-sarcopenia and percentage of thigh muscle fat infiltration) relate to cognitive performance and brain structure (cortical thickness and area, white matter fractional anisotropy and deep and lower brain volumes). Next, we used structural equation modelling to test whether brain structure mediated the association between sarcopenic and cognitive traits. We adjusted all statistical analyses for confounders. We show that sarcopenic traits (probable sarcopenia versus non-sarcopenia and muscle fat infiltration) are significantly associated with lower cognitive performance and various brain magnetic resonance imaging measures. In probable sarcopenia, for the included brain regions, we observed widespread significant lower white matter fractional anisotropy (77.1% of tracts), predominantly lower regional brain volumes (61.3% of volumes) and thinner cortical thickness (37.9% of parcellations), with |r| effect sizes in (0.02, 0.06) and P-values in (0.0002, 4.2e-29). In contrast, we observed significant associations between higher muscle fat infiltration and widespread thinner cortical thickness (76.5% of parcellations), lower white matter fractional anisotropy (62.5% of tracts) and predominantly lower brain volumes (35.5% of volumes), with |r| effect sizes in (0.02, 0.07) and P-values in (0.0002, 1.9e-31). The regions showing the most significant effect sizes across the cortex, white matter and volumes were of the sensorimotor system. Structural equation modelling analysis revealed that sensorimotor brain regions mediate the link between sarcopenic and cognitive traits [probable sarcopenia: P-values in (0.0001, 1.0e-11); muscle fat infiltration: P-values in (7.7e-05, 1.7e-12)]. Our findings show significant associations between sarcopenic traits, brain structure and cognitive performance in a middle-aged and older adult population. Mediation analyses suggest that regional brain structure mediates the association between sarcopenic and cognitive traits, with potential implications for dementia development and prevention.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Post-COVID syndrome affects relatively young outpatients with fatigue as the mostly reported symptom. We wondered whether sarcopenia could play a role. METHODS Seventy-four outpatients (median age: 53.8 yrs, 45 females), reporting fatigue and persistent mild neurological/motor deficits, completed the Clinical, Ultrasound and Robotic Evaluation protocol 4.8 mos after the infection. RESULTS The incidence of sarcopenia was 41%. Sarcopenic patients were older (62.7 vs. 46.4 yrs, P < 0.001), they experienced longer infection (33 vs. 24 days, P = 0.006) and higher incidence of hospitalization (86.6 vs. 29.5%, P < 0.001), they did not report more fatigue (44.5 vs. 48, P = 0.424), but they walked slower (1.27 vs. 1.5 m/sec, P = 0.027).After multivariable adjustment using multiple logistic regression, sarcopenia was dependent on age (odds ratio = 1.09) and on the duration of the disease (odds ratio = 1.04).When expressed as z score, in 79% of patients, the sway path during elastic balance shifted significantly toward negative values with closed eye, indicating multisensory integration deficit. CONCLUSIONS Post-COVID syndrome in relatively young outpatients complaining mild motor deficit is associated with high incidence of sarcopenia. In addition, they have multisensory integration deficit that further contributes to symptoms. The Clinical, Ultrasound and Robotic Evaluation protocol is able to objectivize symptoms that common diagnostic tool cannot reveal. Abstract
OBJECTIVES This study aimed to clarify the association between intrinsic capacity (IC) and sarcopenia in hospitalized older patients. DESIGN A cross-sectional study. SETTING Hospital-based. PARTICIPANTS This study included 381 inpatients aged ≥ 60 years (225 men and 156 women). MEASUREMENTS IC was evaluated in five domains defined by the World Health Organization: cognition (Mini-Mental State Examination), locomotion (Short Physical Performance Battery test), vitality (Short-Form Mini Nutritional Assessment), sensory (self-reported hearing and vision) and psychological (5-item Geriatric Depression Scale) capacities. IC composite score (0-5) was calculated based on five domains, with lower scores representing greater IC. Sarcopenia was defined in accordance with the criteria recommended by the Asian Working Group for Sarcopenia (AWGS) 2019. Multiple linear and logistic regressions were performed to explore the associations between IC composite score and IC domains with sarcopenia and its defining components. RESULTS The mean age of 381 patients included was 81.95±8.42 years. Of them, 128 (33.6%) patients had sarcopenia. The median IC composite score was 1 (1, 2). Cognition, locomotion, vitality, sensory and psychological capacities were impaired in 22.6%, 63.5%, 18.9%, 27.3% and 11.3% of patients. Multiple linear regression analyses showed that favorable IC domain scores in cognition, locomotion and vitality were associated with a stronger handgrip strength. A higher vitality score was associated with a greater appendicular skeletal muscle mass index (ASMI), and a higher locomotion score was associated with a greater gait speed. The multiple logistic regression analysis showed that only vitality impairment was associated with sarcopenia. A higher IC composite score was associated with higher risks of sarcopenia, as well as low ASMI, handgrip strength and gait speed. CONCLUSION This study indicated that a more serious impairment of IC was associated with a greater risk of sarcopenia. Vitality was the domain most strongly associated with sarcopenia. IC may be employed to detect and manage sarcopenia.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The world's age-related health concerns continue to rise. Audio-vestibular disorders, such as hearing loss, tinnitus, and vertigo, are common complaints in the elderly and are associated with social and public health burdens. Various preventative measures can ease their impact, including healthy food consumption, nutritional supplementation, and lifestyle modification. We aim to provide a comprehensive summary of current possible strategies for preventing the age-related audio-vestibular dysfunction. METHODS A PubMed, Embase, and Cochrane review databases search was conducted to identify the relationship between diet, lifestyle, and audio-vestibular dysfunction. "Diet", "nutritional supplement", "lifestyle", "exercise", "physical activity", "tinnitus", "vertigo" and "age-related hearing loss" were used as keywords. RESULTS Audio-vestibular dysfunction develops and progresses as a result of age-related inflammation and oxidative stress. Diets with anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects have been proposed to alleviate this illness. A high-fat diet may induce oxidative stress and low protein intake is associated with hearing discomfort in the elderly. Increased carbohydrate and sugar intake positively correlate with the incidence of audio-vestibular dysfunction, whereas a Mediterranean-style diet can protect against the disease. Antioxidants in the form of vitamins A, C, and E; physical activity; good sleep quality; smoking cessation; moderate alcohol consumption; and avoiding noise exposure are also beneficial. CONCLUSIONS Adequate diet or nutritional interventions with lifestyle modification may protect against developing audio-vestibular dysfunction in elderly individuals.

Abstract
Sensory impairments and sarcopenia are both highly prevalent age-related conditions, with the former having been postulated to contribute to the pathogenesis of the latter condition. Confirming this hypothesis may therefore help to better inform strategies for early treatment and intervention of sarcopenia. We performed a systematic review of the current literature examining the relationships between four major sensory impairments [vision (VI), hearing (HI), smell (SI), and taste (TI)] with (i) sarcopenia; and (ii) its associated components (low handgrip strength, slow gait speed, and low muscle mass). PubMed, EMBASE, CINAHL, and Cochrane Library databases were searched for observational studies investigating the relationship of VI, HI, SI, and TI with sarcopenia, low handgrip strength, slow gait speed, and low muscle mass, in adults aged 50 years or older, from inception until 24 May 2021. The risk of bias of the included studies was assessed using the Newcastle-Ottawa Scale. This study was registered with PROSPERO, reference CRD42021247967. Ten cross-sectional and three longitudinal population-based studies of community-dwelling adults (N = 68 235) were included, with five studies investigating more than one sensory impairment. In total, 8, 6, 3, and 1 studies investigated the relationship between VI, HI, SI, and TI and sarcopenia and its related components, respectively. Follow-up duration for the longitudinal studies ranged from 4 to 11 years. All studies had a low or moderate risk of bias. We found that the presence of VI and SI, but not TI, independently increased the odds of sarcopenia. In addition, VI and SI were each independently associated with low muscle mass; and VI, HI, and SI were each independently associated with slow gait speed. However, we found inconclusive evidence for the associations between VI, HI and SI, and low handgrip strength. Our systematic review suggests a potential association between the presence of single or multiple sensory impairments and a greater likelihood of sarcopenia and/or deficits in its associated components, especially for VI, HI, and SI. Prospective studies are needed to untangle the relationship between sensory impairment and sarcopenia to better inform clinical guidelines for disease prevention and management.
