Abstract
A rare case of proximal focal femoral deficiency (PFFD) is presented due to concerns for a short fetal femur. A 32-year-old patient (G3P2002) was reviewed at 37 weeks of gestation. Sonography revealed an appropriately maturing female fetus, with a left femoral diaphyseal length of 36.1 mm (<1st percentile), while the right measured 71.4 mm (35th percentile). The proximal epiphysis, head, and trochanter of the left fetal femur were absent on 3D sonography, with significant overlap of the femur on the pubic bone. At delivery, the baby weighed 3240 g, with a lower limb-length discrepancy of 56 mm. A radiograph confirmed left-sided hypoplastic proximal femur, absent femoral head, and a poorly formed acetabulum. The baby was conservatively managed, with plans for possible surgery and limb prosthesis. A high index of suspicion and capacity building to facilitate prenatal diagnosis are essential for optimal care of babies with PFFD.

Abstract
Proximal focal femoral deficiency (PFFD) is a rare musculoskeletal malformation that occurs in 0.11-0.2 per 10,000 live births. This congenital anomaly involves the pelvis and proximal femur with widely variable manifestations, from mild femoral shortening and hypoplasia to the absence of any functional femur and acetabular aplasia. Prenatal diagnosis of PFFD is still a challenge, but early recognition of this malformation could provide useful information to both parents and physicians concerning management and therapeutic planning. For this review, we analyzed all the cases of prenatally diagnosed PFFD that were reported in the literature from 1990 to 2014 and provide a description of the most common prenatal sonographic findings.

Abstract
Objective. To discuss a patient with a prenatal diagnosis of unilateral isolated femoral focal deficiency. Case. Antenatal diagnosis of unilateral isolated femoral focal deficiency was made at 20 weeks of gestation. The length of left femur was shorter than the right, and fetal femur length was below the fifth percentile. Proximal femoral focal deficiency was diagnosed. After delivery, the diagnosis was confirmed with skeletal radiographs and magnetic resonance imaging. In prenatal ultrasonographic examination, the early recognition and exclusion of skeletal dysplasias is important; moreover, treatment plans should be initiated, and valuable information should be provided to the family.

Abstract
Proximal femoral focal deficiency (PFFD) represents a rare and complex deformity manifested by hypoplasia of a variable portion of the femur with shortening of the entire limb. The condition may be unilateral or bilateral and is often associated with other congenital anomalies. Recent technological advances in ultrasound imaging offer the opportunity to detect an increasing number of rare skeletal malformation syndromes whose correct diagnosis is essential for adequate counseling and management of the pregnancy. We report a case of fetal non-familial PFFD diagnosed prenatally using two-dimensional and three-dimensional images. Clinical findings, differential diagnosis and management of this rare skeletal dysplasia are discussed and a review of the recent literature is given.

Abstract
Prenatal diagnosis performed by ultrasound scan is now a routine part of antenatal care in France. A case of congenital short femur in an otherwise healthy infant is described. Antenatal diagnosis was made at 18 weeks of gestation and ultrasonic follow-up was performed. The right femur was shorter than the left. Further sonographic exploration demonstrated unilateral femoral hypoplasia without another anomaly. In this case, the occurrence of congenital short femur was sporadic. The diagnosis was confirmed after delivery. Prenatal sonographic features, differential diagnosis, prognosis and management are discussed. This case illustrates the importance of ultrasound as an early detector of certain congenital anomalies and as a useful tool in their follow-up.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To further characterize the prenatal diagnosis of proximal focal femoral deficiency and to contrast this entity with a variety of other "syndromes" in which the femur may be deficient. METHODS We report 2 cases of proximal focal femoral deficiency and a case of femoral-facial syndrome. RESULTS A series of 3 women whose fetuses had deficiency of 1 or both femurs were carefully analyzed for severity and for similarities and differences with other syndromes in which the femur may be deficient, as well as syndromes showing global skeletal abnormalities. CONCLUSIONS Prenatal sonography is a valuable tool both for detecting cases of proximal focal femoral deficiency, separating them from syndromes showing global skeletal abnormalities, and for stratifying them according to severity.

Abstract
Congenital limb deficiency (CLD) occurs in 0.54 to 0.59/1000 live-born infants and varies according to its anatomic location, type and cause. Our aim was to present a fetus with a prenatal ultrasonographic diagnosis of CLD (transverse reduction deficiency of the left upper limb), and to determine the prevalence and clinical characteristics of CLD at a tertiary medical centre in Israel. Among 78 500 live-born infants, there were 24 cases of CLD (0.31/1000): 45.8% of the CLD cases with affected upper limbs, 45.8% with affected lower limbs, and 8.4% with both limbs affected; 88.4% of the limb deficiencies were longitudinal and 11.6% were transverse; and, 33.3% (8/24) of the affected newborn infants had additional congenital anomalies. We conclude that CLD is not an infrequent finding in live-born infants. Comprehensive ultrasonography of the fetus allows early prenatal diagnosis of CLD and provides the parents with important information and helps them in their decision regarding the fate of the pregnancy.
