Gastric duplication cyst with internal hemorrhage after trauma: A case report and literature review

BACKGROUND

Gastric duplication cyst (GDC) is a special type of digestive tract cyst, which occurs mostly in infants and young children. The cyst wall is similar to the stomach wall and mainly consists of gastric mucosa and smooth muscle tissue.

CASE SUMMARY

Here we report a case of GDC with internal hemorrhage. This patient had severe abdominal pain after trauma. Based on her medical history and related examinations, she was misdiagnosed with hepatic cyst with internal hemorrhage. Intraoperative exploration revealed that the base of the cyst was located on the large curved side of the stomach.

CONCLUSION

The clinical symptoms of GDC are untypical, and it is easy to misdiagnose. The preoperative diagnosis is mainly based on imaging examination and surgery is the main therapy method.

Diagnosis and treatment of gastric duplication in children: A case report

Gastric duplication is a rare congenital abnormality, and its diagnosis and treatment may be challenging in certain children. The present study reported four cases of gastric duplication who were followed-up and treated in the Children's Hospital of Zhejiang University between March 2010 and March 2015. The study aimed to increase the knowledge on this disease in order to improve the diagnosis and treatment, as well as decrease the possibility of misdiagnosis. Diagnosis could not be confirmed by the clinical manifestation, ultrasonography and computed tomography (CT). Therefore, laparoscopic examination and laparotomy were conducted, which confirmed the gastric duplication, and resection was performed according to the type of gastric duplication. Two patients received laparoscopy-assisted resection by removing the duplicated gastric tube through the navel, while one patient received total laparoscopic resection, and one patient received laparoscopy and laparotomy. The surgical procedures were performed without any issues, and no complications appeared following the surgery. The preoperative symptoms disappeared completely, and the patients recovered well according to the follow-ups conducted at 1 month, 1 year and 3 years for all four cases. In conclusion, gastric duplication is a rare condition and its preoperative diagnosis is difficult, and laparotomy is an effective method for diagnosis. Laparoscopy-assisted resection or total laparoscopic resection is preferred for uncomplicated gastric duplications, and simple excision can achieve a good therapeutic effect.

Complete gastric duplication in an adult with associated anomalies

Gastric duplication is a rare congenital developmental abnormality usually encountered in children. Nearly all reported cases of this entity describe noncommunicating-type duplication cysts. We present an extremely rare case of complete gastric duplication, involving two separate gastric lumens with proximal and distal communication, incidentally discovered in an elderly male in association with various congenital anomalies not previously reported in literature, as diagnosed with computed tomographic scan and upper gastrointestinal endoscopy.

Usual and unusual causes of pediatric gastric outlet obstruction

Gastric outlet obstruction in children encompasses a spectrum of disorders that extends beyond hypertrophic pyloric stenosis. Each condition can result in the clinical syndrome of persistent nonbilious vomiting, which can progress to dehydration and electrolyte imbalances. This paper reviews the spectrum of both the common and uncommon entities that cause partial or complete gastric outlet obstruction and their imaging appearances. The correct diagnosis of those with gastric outlet obstruction can be achieved by combining clinical presentation with appropriate imaging, leading to optimal and timely patient management.
