Multifractal analysis of Mg-doped ZnO thin films deposited by sol-gel spin coating method

Excellent photocatalytic and antibacterial activities of bio-activated carbon decorated magnesium oxide nanoparticles

Green production of nanomaterials are restrict toxic substances and motivated the noxious free environment. Photocatalysis and antibacterial resistance are more promising and efficient fields for their chemical reductants and clean environment. Herein, we adopted a green and simple method for the biosynthesis of MgO NPs using Manilkara zapota as a bio source. Recently, the green synthesis of magnesium oxide nanoparticles has been a keen interest amongst researchers and scientists due to its simplicity eco-friendliness, non-toxic, inexpensive and potential to perform as an antibacterial agent. Activated carbon/Magnesium oxide (AC/MgO) photocatalyst was blended through a simple solution evaporation method. The surface electron microscopy (SEM) study reviles that AC/MgO had smooth and aggregated particles. The Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) and x-ray diffraction (XRD) study confirms the structural formation and incorporation of nanoparticles into the AC matrix. Results confirmed the flourishing integration of MgO NPs over the activated carbon matrix. The electron movement and valency of AC/MgO photocatalyst reduced the bandgap and their findings were characterized by ultra visible diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (UV-DRS) and x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The blended AC/MgO photocatalyst was analyzed for photodegradation of Rhodamine- B (Rh-B) dye using a UV-visible spectrophotometer. The degradation study projects that the AC/MgO photocatalyst degrades (Rh-B) dye with 99% efficiency under simulated solar irradiation. This efficient degradation of (Rh-B) dye by AC/MgO photocatalyst is ascribed to the synergetic AC as catalytic support and adsorbent and MgO as photocatalyst. Finally, the photocatalytic material shows a better bactericidal effect in both gram-positive bacteria Escherichia coli-745 and gram-negative bacteria Staphylococcus aureus-9779. The AC/MgO photocatalyst is effectively used in bacteriocidal and photocatalytic removal of dyes and can be used for further development of water reuse and bio-medical fields. In addition, this research shows a viable method for synthesizing a cheap and effective AC/MgO for the photocatalytic destruction of organic pollutants.

Deposition of Sol-Gel ZnO:Mg Films and Investigation of Their Structural and Optical Properties

This work presents a facile sol-gel method for the deposition of ZnO and ZnO:Mg films. The films are spin coated on silicon and quartz substrates. The impact of magnesium concentrations (0, 0.5, 1, 2 and 3 wt%) and post-annealing treatments (300-600 °C) on the film's structural, vibrational and optical properties is investigated. Undoped ZnO films crystallize in the wurtzite phase, with crystallite sizes ranging from 9.1 nm (300 °C) to 29.7 nm (600 °C). Mg doping deteriorates the film crystallization and shifting of 002 peak towards higher diffraction angles is observed, indicating the successful incorporation of Mg into the ZnO matrix. ZnO:Mg films (2 wt%) possess the smallest crystallite size, ranging from 6.2 nm (300 °C) to 25.2 nm (600 °C). The highest Mg concentration (3 wt%) results into a segregation of the MgO phase. Lattice constants, texture coefficients and Zn-O bond lengths are discussed. The diminution of the c lattice parameter is related to the replacement of Zn²⁺ by Mg²⁺ in the ZnO host lattice. The vibrational properties are studied by Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy. IR lines related to Mg-O bonds are found for ZnO:Mg films with dopant concentrations of 2 and 3 wt%. The optical characterization showed that the transmittance of ZnO:Mg thin films increased from 74.5% (undoped ZnO) to about 89.1% and the optical band gap energy from 3.24 to 3.56 eV. Mg doping leads to a higher refractive index compared to undoped ZnO films. The FESEM (field emission scanning electron microscopy) technique is used for observation of the surface morphology modification of ZnO:Mg films. The doped ZnO films possess a smoother grained surface structure, opposite to the wrinkle-type morphology of undoped sol-gel ZnO films. The smoother surface leads to improved transparency of ZnO:Mg films.

Genus Sophora: a comprehensive review on secondary chemical metabolites and their biological aspects from past achievements to future perspectives

Sophora is deemed as one of the most remarkable genera of Fabaceae, and the third largest family of flowering plants. The genus Sophora comprises approximately 52 species, 19 varieties, and 7 forms that are widely distributed in Asia and mildly in Africa. Sophora species are recognized to be substantial sources of broad spectrum biopertinent secondary metabolites namely flavonoids, isoflavonoids, chalcones, chromones, pterocarpans, coumarins, benzofuran derivatives, sterols, saponins (mainly triterpene glycosides), oligostilbenes, and mainly alkaloids. Meanwhile, extracts and isolated compounds from Sophora have been identified to possess several health-promising effects including anti-inflammatory, anti-arthritic, antiplatelets, antipyretic, anticancer, antiviral, antimicrobial, antioxidant, anti-osteoporosis, anti-ulcerative colitis, antidiabetic, anti-obesity, antidiarrheal, and insecticidal activities. Herein, the present review aims to provide comprehensive details about the phytochemicals and biological effects of Sophora species. The review spotlighted on the promising phytonutrients extracted from Sophora and their plethora of bioactivities. The review also clarifies the remaining gaps and thus qualifies and supplies a platform for further investigations of these compounds.
