Abstract
Treating polluted wastewater effluents on a large-scale requires the development of high performance and cost-effective adsorbents. The recycling of waste mandarin peels, an environmentally friendly, and copiously available waste biomass into biochar (MRBC), has been approached. In the context of finding affordable and effective solutions for depollution of wastewater, MRBC was used for the adsorption of two dyes: methylene blue (MB) as well as basic fuchsin (BF) from their individual solutions and binary combinations. Batch adsorption studies were performed by employing the Box-Behnken (BB) design. The adsorption competency of dyes was analyzed to find the percentage removal (%R) and the adsorption capacity (qe, mg/g). The dependent parameters (qe and %R) were determined as a function of pH, dose of MRBC (AD), contact time (CT), and concentration of methylene blue [MB]/ basic fuchsin [BF]. Removal of 98.14% of MB and 83.18% of BF was successfully achieved. Equilibrium experiments depicted that Langmuir and Freundlich models suit adsorption of dyes. The maximum adsorption capacity (qmax) was 99.11 (MB) and 78.01 mg/g (BF), individually. However, when the dyes are combined, the qmax decreased to 57.09 and 68.52 mg/g for MB and BF, correspondingly. The cost of MRBC was estimated to be ∼ 4 USD/kg, while the overall cost of wastewater treatment was estimated to be 1.06 USD/m3/year.

Abstract
Three Portuguese olive oils with PDO ('Azeite do Alentejo Interior', 'Azeites da Beira Interior' and 'Azeite de Trás-os-Montes') were studied considering their physicochemical quality, antioxidant capacity, oxidative stability, total phenols content, gustatory sensory sensations and Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectra. All oils fulfilled the legal thresholds of EVOOs and the PDO's specifications. Olive oils from 'Azeite da Beira Interior' and 'Azeite de Trás-os-Montes' showed greater total phenols contents and antioxidant capacities, while 'Azeites da Beira Interior' presented higher oxidative stabilities. Linear discriminant models were developed using FTIR spectra (transmittance and the 1st and 2nd derivatives), allowing the correct identification of the oils' PDO (100 % sensitivity and specificity, repeated K-fold-CV). This study also revealed that multiple linear regression models, based on FTIR transmittance data, could predict the sweet, bitter, and pungent intensities of the PDO oils (R2 ≥0.979±0.016; RMSE≤0.26±0.05, repeated K-fold-CV). This demonstrates the potential of using FTIR as a non-destructive technique for authenticating oils with PDO.

Abstract
Pomegranate trees are known for their ability to withstand drought conditions, but there is still much to learn about how water stress affects the lipobiochemical behavior of their seeds. This study aimed to investigate how sustained deficit irrigation (SDI-50), equivalent to 50% of crop evapotranspiration, influences pomegranate seed oil attributes such as phenols, flavonoids, and tannins content, and the seeds' lipochemical fingerprints compared to fully irrigated trees. At the full ripening stage, pomegranate seeds were analyzed for their oil content, biochemical traits, and vibrational fingerprints using infrared radiation. The results indicated that there was a significant genotypic effect coupled with applied water stress on all the investigated traits. Interestingly, an increasing trend in seed oil yield was observed under water stress conditions compared to the control, with the highest oil yield increase observed in the 'Zheri Precoce' fruit seeds. Only two cultivars did not show the same pattern, with the oil yield increase ranging from 8% to 100%. Furthermore, SDI-50 induced a substantial increase in total phenolic content, coupled with a significant genotypic effect, and resulted in an average increase of 7.5%. This increase in total phenolics also correlated with an increase in antioxidant activity across all investigated cultivars. ATR-FTIR fingerprinting revealed eleven spectral fingerprints corresponding to functional groups present in pomegranate seeds oil, with a particular pattern of significant effects of both genotypic and SDI-50 factors. These results suggest that exploiting water scarcity conditions could be a viable approach to improve the quantitative and qualitative attributes of pomegranate seed oil. While there are still several aspects to be investigated further, this study provides a basis for pomegranate processing under water shortage conditions.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The spirit drinks industry is one of the largest in the world. Fruit distillates require adequate analysis methods combined with statistical tools to build differentiation models, according to distinct criteria (geographical and botanical origin, producer's fingerprint, respectively). Over time a database of alcoholic beverage fingerprints can be generated, being very important for product safety and authenticity control. RESULTS To control the distillates' geographical origin, linear discriminant analysis (LDA) revealed that the cross-validation classification was correct for 88.2% of samples, but partial least squares discriminant analysis (PLS-DA) was slightly better suited for this purpose, with a correct classification rate of 91.2%. LDA effectiveness was proven for the trademark fingerprint differentiation, which was achieved at 93.5%, compared to 89.1% for PLS-DA. The principal predictors obtained by LDA were the same both for geographical origin and producer differentiation: B, δ13 C, Na, Cu, Ca and Be; highlighting the fact that in the production process of distillates each producer used fruits coming from the respective specific region. Through PLS-DA, some of the discrimination markers were the same for geographical origin and producer's identification, but others were completely specific: the rare earth elements Eu and Er only for geographical origin differentiation, and Cu solely as predictor for producer's identification. Regarding distillates' fruit variety, the correct discrimination rates of plum spirits from the rest were 84.2% for PLS-DA and 63% for LDA. CONCLUSION LDA and PLS-DA were suitable for differentiation models development of fruits spirits according to geographical region, producer and fruit variety based on isotopic and elemental fingerprint. © 2022 Society of Chemical Industry.

Abstract
Optoelectronic sensors open up new possibilities for predicting the yield for their possible correction, including increasing the seed germination of forage plants. The luminescent properties of unscarified and scarified seeds of various germination galega, clover and alfalfa are compared. The dependence of germination on the photoluminescence flux is approximated by linear equations with a determination coefficient R2 = 0.932-0.999. A technological process for analyzing the scarification quality of forage seed plants is proposed, including sample preparation, photoluminescence excitation and registration, amplification of the received electrical signal and determination of germination based on calibration equations. This is followed by a decision on sowing, or re-scarification. The scheme of the scarification quality control device has been developed for which the LED, as well as the radiation receiver and other elements, has been selected according to the energy efficiency criterion. Mechanical scarification of the forage plants' seed surfaces has a significant effect on their photoluminescent properties. The flux increases by 1.5-1.7 times for galega, 2.0-3.0 times for clover and 2.3-3.9 times for alfalfa. Linear approximation of the flux dependence on germination with a high coefficient of determination allows us to obtain reliable linear calibration equations. Preliminary mock-up laboratory tests allow us to talk about the developed method's effectiveness and device.

Abstract
A headspace-solid phase microextraction/gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (HS-SPME/GC-MS) method was developed herein for the analysis of virgin olive oil volatile metabolome. Optimisation of SPME conditions was performed by Design of Experiments (DoE) and Response Surface Methodology (RSM) approaches and factors, such as sample volume, sample stirring, extraction temperature and time, and desorption temperature and time, were examined to reach optimal microextraction conditions. The potential of the optimised method was then investigated for its use in the classification of Cretan virgin olive oil samples with the aid of multivariate statistical analysis. Certain markers were identified with significance in the geographical classification of Cretan extra-virgin olive oil (EVOO) samples. In total, 92 volatile organic compounds were tentatively identified and semi-quantified, and the data obtained confirm that the method is robust, reliable, and analytically powerful for olive oil classification.

Abstract
Geographical origin assessment of extra virgin olive oil (EVOO) is recognised worldwide as raising consumers’ awareness of product authenticity and the need to protect top-quality products. The need for geographical origin assessment is also related to mandatory legislation and/or the obligations of true labelling in some countries. Nevertheless, official methods for such specific authentication of EVOOs are still missing. Among the analytical techniques useful for certification of geographical origin, nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and mass spectroscopy (MS), combined with chemometrics, have been widely used. This review considers published works describing the use of these analytical methods, supported by statistical protocols such as multivariate analysis (MVA), for EVOO origin assessment. The research has shown that some specific countries, generally corresponding to the main worldwide producers, are more interested than others in origin assessment and certification. Some specific producers such as Italian EVOO producers may have been focused on this area because of consumers’ interest and/or intrinsic economical value, as testified also by the national concern on the topic. Both NMR- and MS-based approaches represent a mature field where a general validation method for EVOOs geographic origin assessment could be established as a reference recognised procedure.

Abstract
Virgin olive oil (VOO) is one of the key components of the Mediterranean diet owing to the presence of monounsaturated fatty acids and various bioactive compounds. These beneficial traits, which are usually associated with the cultivar genotype, are highlighting the demand of identifying characteristics of olive oil that will ensure its authenticity. In this work, the fatty acid (FA) composition of 199 VOO samples from Koroneiki, Megaritiki, Amfissis, and Manaki cultivars was determined and studied by chemometrics. Olive cultivar greatly influenced the FA composition, namely, oleic acid (from 75.36% for Amfissis to 65.81% for Megaritiki) and linoleic acid (from 13.35% for Manaki to 6.70% for Koroneiki). Spearman’s rho correlation coefficients revealed differences and similarities among the olive oil cultivars. The use of the forward stepwise algorithm identified the FAs arachidonic acid, gadoleic acid, linoleic acid, α-linolenic acid, palmitoleic acid, and palmitic acid as the most significant for the differentiation of samples. The application of linear and quadratic cross-validation discriminant analysis resulted in the correct classification of 100.00% and 99.37% of samples, respectively. The findings demonstrated the special characteristics of the VOO samples derived from the four cultivars and their successful botanical differentiation based on FA composition.

Olive oil is among the most popular supplements of the Mediterranean diet due to its high nutritional value. However, at the same time, because of economical purposes, it is also one of the products most subjected to adulteration. As a result, authenticity is an important issue of concern among authorities. Many analytical techniques, able to detect adulteration of olive oil, to identify its geographical and botanical origin and consequently guarantee its quality and authenticity, have been developed. This review paper discusses the use of infrared and Raman spectroscopy as candidate tools to examine the authenticity of olive oils. It also considers the volatile fraction as a marker to distinguish between different varieties and adulterated olive oils, using SPME combined with gas chromatography technique.

Abstract
To reduce the possibility of bacterial infection and implant-related complications, surface modification on polyurethane (PU) film is an ideal solution to endow hydrophobic PU with antibacterial and antifouling properties. In this work, a variety of polyhexamethylene guanidine/ hyaluronic acid (PHMG/HA) multilayer films were self-assembled layer-by-layer on PU films using polyanions, carboxyl-activated HA, and polycations PHMG by controlling the concentration of these polyelectrolytes as well as the number of layers self-assembled. Attenuated total reflection Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (ATR-FTIR) spectra, water contact angle (WCA), and A Atomic force microscope (AFM) of PU and modified PU films were studied. Protein adsorption and bacterial adhesion as well as the cytotoxicity against L929 of the film on selected PU-(PHMG/HA)5/5-5 were estimated. The results showed that PU-(PHMG/HA)5/5-5 had the best hydrophilicity among all the prepared films, possessing the lowest level of protein adsorption. Meanwhile, this film showed efficient broad-spectrum antibacterial performance as well as significant resistance of bacterial adhesion of more than a 99.9% drop for the selected bacteria. Moreover, almost no influence on cell viability of L929 enhanced the biocompatibility of film. Therefore, the modified PU films with admirable protein absorption resistance, antimicrobial performance, and biocompatibility would have promising applications in biomedical aspect.
