Abstract
Developing paper-based electrophoretic methods involve dealing with significant uncertainty levels when compared to their capillary counterparts. Critical information for developing these kinds of methods are the electrophoretic mobility of background electrolytes and samples. This work presents the design and characterization of a device for measuring the electrophoretic mobilities of dyes in porous media. The device was developed with the aim of validating a previously presented model and also proposing a protocol for the straightforward determination of electrophoretic mobilities in porous media when open-channel values are already known. Whatman #1 paper was used as a model substrate as far as it is the most common porous medium substrate for paper-based electrophoresis. The device was designed using a numerical simulation-assisted approach, utilizing OpenFOAM® and specific solvers for capillary transport and electromigration, namely porousMicroTransport and electroMicroTransport, respectively. The electrophoretic mobilities of five dyes were analyzed experimentally with the proposed device. To establish appropriate comparative values at different pHs, experiments in fused silica capillaries were also performed. An effective parameter model for describing the electrophoretic behavior of dyes in porous media, that is, the constriction factor, was found consistent with previous reports for the Whatman #1 paper. This consistency was found after considering (via direct measurements) the chromatographic effect of the medium over each dye. Consequently, the recorded values hold significant worth due to their potential for direct application in designing new experiments or devices in Whatman #1 paper. With the validation of the model through the experiments with the proposed device, those researchers interested on developing electrophoretic methods in porous substrates can make use of the open-channel electrophoretic mobilities reported in the literature, or in the well-known software databases, and correct them for the media of interest just by performing two simple characterization steps.

Abstract
A sensitive electrochemical sensor for sunset yellow (SY) was constructed based on cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) functionalized graphene (Gr) and Cu/Zr-MOF electrode modified materials. The CTAB-Gr-Cu/Zr-MOF composites were synthesized by using a mild method and characterized by scanning electron microscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and EDX spectrum. The combination of Cu/Zr-MOF and graphene exhibited synergetic effect of the strong accumulation efficiency, fast electron transfer rate and more sensing sites towards the oxidation of SY. The new modified materials remarkably increased the electrochemical response of SY to 6.53-fold when comparing with bare electrode. Under the optimized conditions, the oxidation peak currents of SY had a linear relationship with its concentration in a wide range from 0.10 to 8.00 μM and 40.00-1000.00 μM, and the limit of detection was 6.68 nM (S/N = 3). The electrochemical method shows high sensitivity, stability, reproducibility and is successfully applied in the determination of SY in soft drinks.

Abstract
We present a novel method for concentration and purification of DNA from biological samples. The method is based on isotachophoretic separation of DNA strands in a separation bed made of a disposable nonwoven fabric strip. Application of oxalate as the leading ion prevented corrosion of the carbon anode and also the leading ion was continually removed from the system due to its decomposition into CO2 at the anode. The fractions were marked by three colored markers of electrophoretic mobility closely surrounding the mobility of DNA. The fraction collection was realized by a centrifugal drain of cut out strip segments. The method was evaluated using two purified salmon sperm DNA fragments of lengths 200 bp and 2000 bp. The results confirmed the high DNA concentrating effect of the method (34-fold increase of the original DNA concentration). The composition of running solutions and voltage program were optimized in order to finish the analysis within 30 min. The optimized method was used to extract, concentrate and purify DNA from a crude yeast cell lysate. The maximum DNA enrichment factor decreased to 12 due to the stretching of DNA zones caused by low-molecular contaminants present in the original lysate. The average recovery determined for yeast DNA was 71 ± 11% (n = 3). The connected elimination of the proteins from DNA zones resulted in the purification factor value of 582 for DNA vs proteins. This demonstrates that the presented method is capable to concentrate DNA from the bulk volume and to further purify it from crude cell lysates using a simple instrumentation and low-cost disposable separation bed.

Abstract
Color is one of the key ingredients for increasing the appetizing of food, so food dyes have become firmly established in food production technologies. However, with the acquisition of toxicity data of synthetic food dyes (SFD), there were restrictions and standards for their content in food have emerged. Numerous papers published in recent years demonstrate the importance of the problem of the use and definition of SFD. The review contains over 180 literary references in the field of usage and methods of determination of synthetic food dyes, among them regulatory documents (regulations), official internet resources of international and Ukrainian organizations, review articles and original works. Varieties of chromatography, enzyme-linked immunoassay, optical and electrochemical methods are used to identify and determine SFD. Special attention was paid to voltammetry (VA) as a method that is cheaper than chromatography and completely satisfies selectivity, sensitivity, reliability requirements and is compatible with the concept of green analytical chemistry, as it doesn't need organic solvents. Moreover, single sweep voltammetry can be considered as a screening method with low limits of determination and rapid respons

Abstract
TiO2-reduced graphene oxide composite-modified glassy carbon electrodes (TiO2–ErGO–GCE) for the sensitive detection of tartrazine were prepared by drop casting followed by electrochemical reduction. The as-prepared material was characterized by transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and X-ray diffraction (XRD). Cyclic voltammetry and second-order derivative linear scan voltammetry were performed to analyze the electrochemical sensing of tartrazine on different electrodes. The determination conditions (including pH, accumulation potential, and accumulation time) were optimized systematically. The results showed that the TiO2–ErGO composites increased the electrochemical active area of the electrode and enhanced the electrochemical responses to tartrazine significantly. Under the optimum detection conditions, the peak current was found to be linear for tartrazine concentrations in the range of 2.0 × 10−8–2.0 × 10−5 mol/L, with a lower detection limit of 8.0 × 10−9 mol/L (S/N = 3). Finally, the proposed TiO2–ErGO–GCEs were successfully applied for the detection of trace tartrazine in carbonated beverage samples.

Abstract
Food colors are added to different types of commodities to increase their visual attractiveness or to compensate for natural color variations. The use of these additives is strictly regulated in the European Union, the United States, and many other countries worldwide. There is a growing concern about the safety of some commonly used legal food colorants and there is a trend to replace the synthetic forms with natural products. Additionally, a number of dyes with known or suspected genotoxic or carcinogenic properties have been shown to be added illegally to foods. Robust monitoring programs based on reliable detection methods are required to assure the food is free from harmful colors. The aim of this review is to present an up to date status of the various concerns arising from use of color additives in food. The most important food safety concerns in the field of food colors are lack of uniform regulation concerning legal food colors worldwide, possible link of artificial colors to hyperactive behavior, replacement of synthetic colors with natural ones, and the presence of harmful illegal dyes-both known but also new, emerging ones in food. The legal status of food color additives in the EU, United States, and worldwide is summarized. The reported negative health effects of both legal and illegal colors are presented. The European Rapid Alert System for Food and Feed notifications and US import alerts concerning food colors are analyzed and trends in fraudulent use of color additives identified. The detection methods for synthetic colors are also reviewed.

Abstract
Two methods for the determination of Sudan dyes (Sudan I, Sudan II, Sudan III and Sudan IV) in food samples, by solid phase extraction - capillary liquid chromatography, are proposed. Both methods use nanocellulose (NC) extracted from bleached argan press cake (APC), as a nano-adsorbent recycled from an agricultural waste material. One of the methods involves the dispersion of NC in food sample extracts, along with the waste and eluents being separated by centrifugation. In the other method, NC was modified by magnetic iron nanoparticles before using it in the extraction of Sudan dyes. The use of a magnetic component in the extraction process allows magnetic separation to replace the centrifugation step in a convenient and economical way. The two proposed methods allows the determination of Sudan dye amounts at the 0.25-2.00µgL-1 concentration range. The limit of detections, limit of quantifications and standard deviations achieved were lower than 0.1µgL-1, 0.20µgL-1 and 3.46% respectively, when using NC as a nano-adsorbent, and lower than 0.07µgL-1, 0.23µgL-1 and 2.62%, respectively, with the magnetic nanocellulose (MNC) was used. Both methods were applied to the determination of Sudan dyes in barbeque and ketchup sauce samples, obtaining recoveries between 93.4% and 109.6%.

Abstract
Fluorescent carbon dots was prepared by heating N-(2-hydroxyethyl)ethylene diaminetriacetic acid in air. The carbon dots were not only highly soluble in water but also uniform in size, and possessed strong blue fluorescence and excitation wavelength-dependent emission properties with the maximum excitation and emission wavelength at 366nm and 423nm, respectively. Food colorant sunset yellow whose excitation and emission wavelength at 303nm and 430nm could selectively quench the fluorescence of carbon dots, efficient fluorescent resonance energy transfer between the carbon dots and sunset yellow is achieved. This was exploited to design a method for the determination of sunset yellow in the concentration range from 0.3 to 8.0μmolL(-1), with a limit of detection (3σ/k) of 79.6nmolL(-1). Furthermore the fluorimetric detection method was established and validated for sunset yellow in soft drinks samples with satisfactory results.

Abstract
A novel method for simultaneous determination of sucrose and sunset yellow in retail soft drink without separation by combination of retro-reflected beam interference-based refractive index (RBI) and thermal lens (TL) detections was developed. The method proposed here successfully realized individual measurements of sucrose and sunset yellow in one single sample, while their concentrations were thousands of times different in the sample. Under optimized conditions, a separation-free process was carried out so that sucrose and sunset yellow were quantified at the same time. Limits of detection (LODs) of sucrose and sunset yellow were 0. 21 mg ml-1 and 0.23 μg ml-1 and the relative standard deviation (RSDs) were 3.9% and 3.07%. The developed method was successfully applied for the simultaneous analysis of sucrose and sunset yellow in retail soft drink. The soft drink containing 123.6 ± 2.6 mg ml-1 sucrose and 46.6 ± 1.8 μg ml-1 sunset yellow have been simultaneously measured without any separation procedure.

Abstract
A method for the simultaneous determination of the stilbene resveratrol, four phenolic acids (syringic, coumaric, caffeic, and gallic acids), and five flavonoids (catechin, rutin, kaempferol, myricetin, and quercetin) in wine by CE was developed and validated. The CE electrolyte composition and instrumental conditions were optimized using 2(7-3) factorial design and response surface analysis, showing sodium tetraborate, MeOH, and their interaction as the most influential variables. The optimal electrophoretic conditions, minimizing the chromatographic resolution statistic values, consisted of 17 mmol/L sodium tetraborate with 20% methanol as electrolyte, constant voltage of 25 kV, hydrodynamic injection at 50 mbar for 3 s, and temperature of 25 degrees C. The R(2) values for linearity varied from 0.994 to 0.999; LOD and LOQ were 0.1 to 0.3 mg/L and 0.4 to 0.8 mg/L, respectively. The RSDs for migration time and peak area obtained from ten consecutive injections were less than 2% and recoveries varied from 97 to 102%. The method was applied to 23 samples of inexpensive Brazilian wines, showing wide compositional variation.

Abstract
In the analysis of food additives, past emphasis was put on the development of chromatographic techniques to separate target components from a complex matrix. Especially in the case of artificial food colors, direct spectrophotometric measurement was seen to lack in specificity due to a high spectral overlap between different components. Multivariate curve resolution (MCR) may be used to overcome this limitation. MCR is able to (i) extract from a complex spectral feature the number of involved components, (ii) attribute the resulting spectra to chemical compounds, and (iii) quantify the individual spectral contributions with or without a priori knowledge. We have evaluated MCR for the routine analysis of yellow and blue food colors in absinthe spirits. Using calibration standards, we were able to show that MCR equally performs as compared to partial least-squares regression but with much improved chemical information contained in the predicted spectra. MCR was then applied to an authentic collective of different absinthes. As confirmed by reference analytics, the food colors were correctly assigned with a sensitivity of 0.93 and a specificity of 0.85. Besides the artificial colors, the algorithm detected a further component in some samples that could be assigned to natural coloring from chlorophyll.

Abstract
The effects of different surfactants (sodium 2-ethylhexyl sulfate, sodium decyl sulfate, sodium dodecyl sulfate and sodium tetradecyl sulfate) on the analysis of phenolic compounds by microchip-CE with pulsed amperometric detection were investigated. Using sodium decyl sulfate as a model surfactant, the effects of concentration and pH were examined. Under the optimized conditions, the analysis of six phenolic compounds was performed and compared with control runs performed without surfactant. When these surfactants were present in the run buffer, decreases in the migration time and increases in the run-to-run reproducibility were observed. Systematic improvements in the electrochemical response for the phenolic compounds were also obtained. According to the results presented, surfactants enhance the analyte-electrode interaction and facilitate the electron transfer process. These results should allow a more rational selection of the surfactants based on their electrophoretic and electrochemical effects.

Abstract
This article reviews the latest developments in the application of capillary electromigration methods for the analysis of foods and food components. Nowadays, methods based on CE techniques are becoming widely used in food analytical and research laboratories. This review covers the application of CE to analyze amino acids, biogenic amines, peptides, proteins, DNAs, carbohydrates, phenols, polyphenols, pigments, toxins, pesticides, vitamins, additives, small organic and inorganic ions, chiral compounds, and other compounds in foods, as well as to investigate food interactions and food processing. The use of microchips as well as other foreseen trends in CE analysis of foods is discussed. Papers that were published during the period June 2002-June 2005 are included following the previous review by Frazier and Papadopoulou (Electrophoresis 2003, 24, 4095-4105).
