Abstract
The use of matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization (MALDI) mass spectrometry for the analysis of carbohydrates and glycoconjugates is a well-established technique and this review is the 12th update of the original article published in 1999 and brings coverage of the literature to the end of 2022. As with previous review, this review also includes a few papers that describe methods appropriate to analysis by MALDI, such as sample preparation, even though the ionization method is not MALDI. The review follows the same format as previous reviews. It is divided into three sections: (1) general aspects such as theory of the MALDI process, matrices, derivatization, MALDI imaging, fragmentation, quantification and the use of computer software for structural identification. (2) Applications to various structural types such as oligo- and polysaccharides, glycoproteins, glycolipids, glycosides and biopharmaceuticals, and (3) other general areas such as medicine, industrial processes, natural products and glycan synthesis where MALDI is extensively used. Much of the material relating to applications is presented in tabular form. MALDI is still an ideal technique for carbohydrate analysis, particularly in its ability to produce single ions from each analyte and advancements in the technique and range of applications show little sign of diminishing.

Abstract
Galactooligosaccharides (GOS) are important prebiotics with function closely related to their structure. However, a comprehensive overview of the structure-function relationship is still limited due to the challenge in characterizing multiple isomers in GOS. This study presents a strategy of combining both hydrophilic interaction liquid chromatography (HILIC) retention time and tandem mass spectrometry (MS/MS) fragmentation pattern to distinguish α/β-linkages and linkage positions of disaccharide isomers in GOS through HILIC-MS/MS analysis. The results indicated that the ratio of m/z 203.0524 to m/z 365.1054 could distinguish α/β-linkages, while the ratios of m/z 347.0947 to m/z 365.1054, m/z 245.0642 to m/z 365.1054 and HILIC retention time could distinguish (1 → 2), (1 → 3), (1 → 4) and (1 → 6) linkages. The above rules enabled effective characterization of disaccharides in GOS-containing food samples, including milk powder, rice flour, drink, yogurt. This method can be used in the quality control of GOS and future research on the structure-specific health effects of GOS.

Abstract
The gut has been a focus of chronic disease research. The gut microbiota produces metabolites that act as signaling molecules and substrates, closely influencing host health. Nondigestible oligosaccharides (NDOs), as a common dietary fiber, play an important role in regulating the structure and function of the gut microbiota. Their mechanism of action is mainly attributed to providing a carbon source as specific probiotics, producing related metabolites, and regulating the gut microbial community. However, due to the selective utilization of oligosaccharides, some factors, such as the type and structure of oligosaccharides, have different impacts on the composition of microbial populations and the production of metabolites in the colon ecosystem. This review systematically describes the key factors influencing the selective utilization of oligosaccharides by microorganisms and elaborates how oligosaccharides affect the host's immune system, inflammation levels, and energy metabolism by regulating microbial diversity and metabolic function, which in turn affects the onset and progress of chronic diseases, especially diabetes, obesity, depression, intestinal inflammatory diseases, and constipation. In this review, we re-examine the interaction mechanisms between the gut microbiota and its associated metabolites and diseases, and we explore new strategies for promoting human health and combating chronic diseases through dietary interventions.

Abstract
A strong anion exchanger applied for ion chromatography is described by grafting methacrylamido propyl trimethyl ammonium chloride onto hydrolyzed poly(glycidyl methacrylate-divinylbenzene) substrate. The anion exchanger has been in detail characterized and the final capacity of the anion exchanger can be readily manipulated by different monomer amounts. It exhibited obvious temperature-sensitive property and large tolerance to the samples with high ionic strength. The obtained anion exchanger demonstrated effective separation ability towards the common seven inorganic anions within 12 min and high separation efficiency, e.g. 58,000 /m of theoretical plate count for chloride.
