Pyrene Containing Polymers for the Non-Covalent Functionalization of Carbon Nanotubes

Geometric Transformation of Modified Multiwalled Carbon Nanotubes-Based Heterometallic Nanostructured Material: A Model for the Electrochemical Discrimination of Insecticides

Multifunctional carbon-based materials exhibit a large number of unprecedented active sites via an electron transfer process and act as a desired platform for exploring high-performance electroactive material. Herein, we exemplify the holistic design of a heterometallic nanostructured material (MWCNTs@KR-6/Mn/Sn/Pb) formed by the integration of metals (Mn2+, Sn2+, and Pb2+) and a dipodal ligand (KR-6) at the surface of multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs). First, MWCNTs@KR-6 was readily synthesized via a noncovalent approach, which was further sequentially doped by Mn2+, Sn2+, and Pb2+ to give MWCNTs@KR-6/Mn/Sn/Pb. The designed material showed excellent electrochemical activity for the discrimination of insecticides belonging to structurally different classes. In contrast to that of the individual building components, both the stability and electrochemical activity of heterometallic nanostructured material were remarkably enhanced, resulting in a magnificent electrochemical performance of the developed material. Hence, the current work reports a comprehensive synthetic approach for MWCNTs@KR-6/Mn/Sn/Pb synthesis by synergizing unique properties of the heterometallic complex with MWCNTs. This work also offers a new insight into the design of multifunctional carbon-based materials for discrimination of different analytes on the basis of their redox potential.

Functionalization of carbon nanotubes by combination of controlled radical polymerization and "grafting to" method

This paper reviews the recent advances in non-covalent and covalent tethering of small molecules and polymer chains onto carbon nanotube (CNT) and its derivatives. The functionalized CNT has recently attracted great attention because of an increasing number of its potential applications. In non-covalent functionalization of CNT, the sp²-hybridized network plays a crucial role. The non-covalent grafting of small molecules and polymers can mainly be carried out through hydrogen bonding and π-stacking interactions. In covalent functionalization of CNT, condensation, cycloaddition, and addition reactions play a key role. Polymer modification has been reported by using three main methods of "grafting from", "grafting through", and also "grafting to". The "grafting from" and "grafting through" rely on propagation of polymer chains in the presence of CNT modified with initiator and double bond moieties, respectively. In "grafting to" method, which is the main aim of this review, the pre-fabricated polymer chains are mainly grafted onto the surface using coupling reactions. The coupling reactions are used for grafting pre-fabricated polymer chains and also small molecules onto CNT. Recent studies on grafting polymer chains onto CNT via "grafting to" method have focused on the pre-fabricated polymer chains by conventional and controlled radical polymerization (CRP) methods. CRP includes reversible activation, atom transfer, degenerative (exchange) chain transfer, and reversible chain transfer mechanisms, and could result in polymer-grafted CNT with narrow polydispersity index of the grafted polymer chains. Based on the mentioned mechanisms, nitroxide-mediated polymerization, atom transfer radical polymerization, and reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer are known as the three commonly used CRP methods. Such polymer-modified CNT has lots of applications in batteries, biomedical fields, sensors, filtration, solar cells, etc.

Stereocomplexation of Poly(Lactic Acid)s on Graphite Nanoplatelets: From Functionalized Nanoparticles to Self-assembled Nanostructures

The control of nanostructuration of graphene and graphene related materials (GRM) into self-assembled structures is strictly related to the nanoflakes chemical functionalization, which may be obtained via covalent grafting of non-covalent interactions, mostly exploiting π-stacking. As the non-covalent functionalization does not affect the sp2 carbon structure, this is often exploited to preserve the thermal and electrical properties of the GRM and it is a well-known route to tailor the interaction between GRM and organic media. In this work, non-covalent functionalization of graphite nanoplatelets (GnP) was carried out with ad-hoc synthesized pyrene-terminated oligomers of polylactic acid (PLA), aiming at the modification of GnP nanopapers thermal properties. PLA was selected based on the possibility to self-assemble in crystalline domains via stereocomplexation of complementary poly(L-lactide) (PLLA) and poly(D-lactide) (PDLA) enantiomers. Pyrene-initiated PLLA and PDLA were indeed demonstrated to anchor to the GnP surface. Calorimetric and X-ray diffraction investigations highlighted the enantiomeric PLAs adsorbed on the surface of the nanoplatelets self-organize to produce highly crystalline stereocomplex domains. Most importantly, PLLA/PDLA stereocomplexation delivered a significantly higher efficiency in nanopapers heat transfer, in particular through the thickness of the nanopaper. This is explained by a thermal bridging effect of crystalline domains between overlapped GnP, promoting heat transfer across the nanoparticles contacts. This work demonstrates the possibility to enhance the physical properties of contacts within a percolating network of GRM via the self-assembly of macromolecules and opens a new way for the engineering of GRM-based nanostructures.

Functionalisation of MWCNTs with poly(lauryl acrylate) polymerised by Cu(0)-mediated and RAFT methods

We report the thermal and thermo-mechanical stability of poly(lauryl acrylate) P[LA] synthesised using RAFT and Cu(0)-mediated polymerisation methods and their interactions with multi-walled carbon nanotubes.

Rational Design of Multiamphiphilic Polymer Compatibilizers: Versatile Solubility and Hybridization of Noncovalently Functionalized CNT Nanocomposites

The design of amphiphilic polymer compatibilizers for solubility manipulation of CNT composites was systematically generalized in this study. Structurally tailored multiamphiphilic compatibilizer were designed and synthesized by applying simple, high-yield reactions. This multiamphiphilic compatibilizer was applied for noncovalent functionalization of CNTs as well as provided CNTs with outstanding dispersion stability, manipulation of solubility, and hybridization with Ag nanoparticles (NPs). With regard to the dispersion properties, superior records in maximum concentration (2.88-3.10 mg/mL in chloroform), and mass ratio of the compatibilizer for good CNT dispersion (36 wt %) were achieved by MWCNTs functionalized with a multiamphiphilic block copolymer compatibilizer. In particular, the solubility limitations of MWCNT dispersion in solvents ranging from toluene (nonpolar) to aqueous solution (polar) are surprisingly resolved by introducing this multiamphiphilic polymer compatibilizer. Furthermore, this polymer compatibilizer allowed the synthesis of the hybrid CNT nanocomposites with Ag nanoparticles by an in situ nucleation process. As such, the multiamphiphilic compatibilizer candidate as a new concept for the noncovalent functionalization of CNTs can extend their use for a wide range of applications.

Ethanolic RAFT Dispersion Polymerization of 2-(Naphthalen-2-yloxy)ethyl Methacrylate and 2-Phenoxyethyl Methacrylate with Poly[2-(dimethylamino)ethyl Methacrylate] Macro-Chain Transfer Agents

The ethanolic reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer dispersion polymerization (RAFTDP), at 21 wt-%, of 2-(naphthalen-2-yloxy)ethyl methacrylate (NOEMA) and 2-phenoxyethyl methacrylate (POEMA) with a poly[2-(dimethylamino)ethyl methacrylate] macro-chain transfer agent (CTA) with an average degree of polymerization of 20 (PDMAEMA20) is described. DMAEMA20-b-NOEMAy (y = 20–125) block copolymers were readily prepared under dispersion conditions in ethanol at 70°C. However, the polymerization of NOEMA was not well controlled, with size exclusion chromatograms being distinctly bi or multimodal with measured dispersities . Though NOEMA copolymerization was not ideal, the resulting series of block copolymers did exhibit the anticipated full spectrum of nanoparticle morphologies (spheres, worms, and vesicles). Interestingly, these morphology transitions occurred over a relatively narrow range of block copolymer compositions. In the case of POEMA, copolymerization was also poorly controlled with 1.50 ≤ ĐM ≤ 1.83 for the series of DMAEMA20-b-POEMAy copolymers. In contrast to the NOEMA-based copolymers, the POEMA series only yielded nanoparticles with a spherical morphology whose size increased with increasing average degrees of polymerization of the POEMA block. Collectively, though both NOEMA and POEMA can be utilized in ethanolic RAFT dispersion polymerization formulations, these preliminary studies suggest that neither appears to be an ideal aryl methacrylate choice as comonomer, especially if the goal is to combine the synthesis of well-defined copolymers with efficient nanoparticle formation.

Double Stimuli-Responsive Copolymer Stabilizers for Multiwalled Carbon Nanotubes

A unique copolymer stabilizer is presented that can be used to stabilize multiwalled carbon nanotubes in aqueous solution to form "smart" dispersions. They showed double stimuli-responsive behavior (in dependence of temperature and ionic strength) and allowed for accurate control of the transition (exfoliated → agglomerated) temperature of nanotubes over a wide temperature range. In spite of its effective dispersion strength, the copolymer was easily synthesized in one step via free radical copolymerization of N-isopropylacrylamide and 1-ethyl-3-vinylimidazolium bromide.

Synthesis, characterization, and multilayer assembly of pH sensitive graphene-polymer nanocomposites

pH sensitive graphene-polymer composites have been prepared by the modification of graphene basal planes with pyrene-terminated poly(2-N,N'-(dimethyl amino ethyl acrylate) (PDMAEA) and poly(acrylic acid) (PAA) via pi-pi stacking. The pyrene-terminal PDMAEA and PAA were synthesized using reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) polymerization with a pyrene-functional RAFT agent. The graphene-polymer composites were found to demonstrate phase transfer behavior between aqueous and organic media at different pH values. Atomic force microscopy (AFM) analysis revealed that the thicknesses of the graphene-polymer sheets were approximately 3.0 nm when prepared using PDMAEA (M(n): 6800 and PDI: 1.12). The surface coverage of polymer chains on the graphene basal plane was calculated to be 5.3 x 10(-11) mol cm(-2) for PDMAEA and 1.3 x 10(-10) mol cm(-2) for PAA. The graphene-polymer composites were successfully characterized using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), attenuated total reflection infrared (ATR-IR) spectroscopy, and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). Self-assembly of the two oppositely charged graphene-polymer composites afforded layer-by-layer (LbL) structures as evidenced by high-resolution scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and quartz crystal microbalance (QCM) measurements.
